Mike_LowELL: I dislike San Andreas, Vice City, and Saints Row: The Third for the same reasons, and it has nothing to do with motif and tone.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that you just hated games in general ... carry on.

skinink: RodneyToady: I actually just started playing SR3 about a week ago, after a big sale on Steam.  I'm finding it more enjoyable than GTA IV.

I haven't played any of the Saints Row series, but GTA4 wasn't as fun as the previous games in the series for me, and it seemed too easy to die or get caught with a six star wanted level. The Lost and the Damned wasn't much better, but I haven't had the chance to play the Ballad of Gay Tony yet.

Also Red Dead Redemption is overrated. It seems like there's none of the silliness that was in GTA3 or Vice City. The series began to suck with San Andreas.

The thing that made me stop playing GTA IV was all the buttholes calling me up all the time to go out places. If I wanted to go out places, I would do that instead of playing games.

I don't know about the rest of the series, but Saint's Row the Third is TERRIBLE.

/Huge GTA fan from way back, Saints Row 3 doesn't hold a candle to any GTA, not even close.
//Saint's Row 3 is Buggy, awful stories, buggy, bad controls, buggy!

So you're saying you don't have a bias? SR3 runs great with no bugs for me. Maybe time to upgrade your shiat puter?

Bite me subs. SR3 was amazing. Just the character customization alone was head and shoulders above GTghey. I love the fact that I was a 6'5" platinum skinned, green haired, Latvian chick in a pom pom girl's outfit and it still fit into the story.

San Andreas would hardly be credible if you were allowed to roll a white guy. But of course, that's the problem. Rockstar placed verisimilitude above fun.

In E3S of old, THQ was sort of a laughingstock, didn't have any real games (I distinctly remember visiting their area once and all they were pushing was some Looney Tunes game).

Then they got a few decent (not blockbuster mind you) franchises and I said, hey, good job, you guys aren't doing so bad now.

But it was only a matter of time before they screwed it up again. IIRC, they did a bunch of crazy shiat with DLC in Saints Row 3 that people weren't too fond of (locked content on the disk for example).

// Their decent franchises were from companies they bought (Volition, Relic, Vigil)

For the folks worried about The Stick of Truth: Chapter 11 is not the "total liquidation" bankruptcy; it is the "restructuring" bankruptcy.  Despite that they are selling off their assets, entering into a Chapter 11 will allow them to continue work on existing projects and pay creditors for those projects accordingly.  However the bankruptcy protections relieve them of other debt payments such as lines of credit, etc.

They'll still be gone at the end of it...I anticipate after their final release they will probably liquidate and dissolve the company, but in the interim period there's no reason to believe they are going to immediately cancel or delay current works.

Gwyrddu: Lost Thought 00: Classic tale of over borrowing to payout executive bonuses, and leaving the company to collapse once the bill comes due.

Probably the only reason why a video game company still making money logically would go under. Paying upkeep for programmers and some officer space isn't that expensive.

I'm sure though that if software developers belonged to a union they would be blamed for all of this.

You gotta love FARK.

Someone clearly pulls some "executive pay" bullshiat out of their ass...and not only does someone not call him on his bullshiat, they pile on and defend Unions at the same time when THQ isn't unionized.

The ACTUAL reason THQ crapped the bed was bad bets on kid's franchises and the uDraw product that cost a ginormous amount to develop and was a serious flop.

In San Andreas Carl was needy. He had be fed, work out and there was a few other things that had to be done for him, it was annoying. BUT, the game itself looked fantastic. It just turned into a grinding game, and GTA4 seemed the same way to me. Plus the damn annoying cellphone calls.

On the other hand there were so many fun challenges in Vice City. My favorite was going to the race track in the stadium.

Well it seems Rockstar took note of these kind of complaints because GTA 5 isn't going to have all the eating and working out from SA and the annoying calls from "friends" found in GTA 4. I do miss the gang wars from SA and I guess that isn't going to be part of the deal, but I have a good feeling about 5.

skinink: ...GTA4 wasn't as fun as the previous games in the series for me, and it seemed too easy to die or get caught with a six star wanted level.

THIS is also exactly true of Assassin's Creed 3... you f#ck off a single redcoat and 8 of them attack you, and you can outrun all of them but the redcoats you run into up ahead are already looking for you, as if the first bunch radioed ahead.

And also like GTA4, AC3 gets a lot of industry accolades for being "more realistic' than its predessors, ignoring the fact that it's simply not as much fun to play.

Does THQ publish Codemasters?

Because the F1 games, DiRT, GRiD, etc. are listed on their website.

This is not a good thing for racing games, the genre's already been whittled down to next to nothing except craptastic NFS games and Forza and GT. However, GT5 was absolute garbage, and the Forza series isn't doing to great either. Horizon is pretty disappointing, and the DLC is just a flat out rip off.

Wonder if someone will pick up the Warhammer 40K franchise from them. Dawn of War 1 & 2 were pretty damn good; Space Marine was just wayyyy too short and laggy on multiplayer (plus the final fight was atrociously badly designed -- only the end cutscene redeemed it).

Also, SR3 wasn't as good as 2, but it was still superior to GTA IV.

2012-12-19 09:49:11 PM

Summercat: Which mike is talking, politics tab troll or the operator?

I'm actually curious as to what you mean by "the operator".  And yes, it's probably that one.

Teufelaffe: Except for the part where, you know, experimenting with those variables is fun.

As I remember it, most of the toys in the game fall under the same categories: Annihilates people, annihilates vehicles, annihilates large areas, flies over things.  They not only have significant overlap, but none of them need to be done out of necessity.

Teufelaffe: Anyone who ever complains about any game being "too easy" needs to go play Demon Souls or Ninja Gaiden Black and leave the rest of us in peace. ;P

I'm not arguing that all games have to be difficult in order to be fun, but certain game systems and mechanics need a higher difficulty level to function properly, and sandbox games have to at least wave off your first attempt and force you to experiment.  (Crackdown does an excellent job at this.)  Easiest example I can give from my Saints Row experience was the mission where you have to defend the hideout.  I ran through the autosave without a significant amount of ammunition and actually died a couple of times because of it.  So eventually, I just pulled out the Cyber Blaster (when I ran out of my base ammo) and ran through the mission using that.  That was the only time in the game I felt that I was actually being pushed and tested to explore my options.  Everything else was either completed on the first few tries or I simply brute-forced my way through everything with a gun.

Glitchwerks: Does THQ publish Codemasters?

THQ distributed for Codemasters in the U.S. so Codemasters will just have to publish it themselves or find a different publisher.

RDR has one of the best stories and possibly the best ending I've seen in a video game. That the game play and open world were fun only helps.

2012-12-19 09:58:44 PM
Honestly, I haven't liked the GTA franchise since 3 (and that was a LONG time ago).

Saints Row 2 was brilliant, managing to mix a very well told story with balls to the walls insanity, varied gameplay, and endless new ways to customize your character and places to explore.

Saints Row 3 got the balls to the walls insanity right, but took out a lot of the customization, exploration and varied gameplay, and the story couldn't hold a candle to 2's. It particularly suffered from pacing problems in act 2.

Its fun, but not as fun as SR2, and certianly not as engaging.

The third sucked ass...and I don't know why. It was similar but for some reason I just couldn't get into it.

Hence the 20 million in sales and the critical acclaim. Revolutionary Euphoria system making car crashes and gunfights ten times more engaging, the lifelike city full of astounding detail, satisfying driving physics making every corner a planned accomplishment instead of powersliding in a semi? Nah, we want dildo bats and Johnny Gat dying off camera in a video they released before the game came out...

My bad for not checking the executive pay claim which I couldn't find anything on, although I did find another reason you apparently missed in that THQ was buying up studio after studio with no strategic plan only to shut them down later, basically bad management decisions all around.

As for unions, I mentioned THQ wasn't unionized. Which is why unions weren't blamed like they seem to be every time a unionized business has problems, regardless of who is mostly at fault. It wasn't a barb at THQ, rather at the reaction to Hostess, GM, and the countless other times that unions are automatically portrayed as the villain.

jagermech: I too echo the SR2 > SR3. Better story, better characters, better customization. Not that SR3 was a bad game. I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. It just didn't quite match the impact of SR2.

SR2 was a shiatty PC port though. Thank god for the Gentleman of the Row addon and fixes. Even then it was still touch and go at times.

I really enjoyed SR3 while not really loving any GTA. I have SR2 but it really seems unplayable on the PC. Is this mod/patch available on Steam?
