Heh, whoops. But really, it was a disaster today. For 15 years the DC press has been screaming "Dems never want to talk about gun control!" Today, the sitting president holds a press conference to discuss gun control and the first four questions he receives afterwards are about the fiscal cliff and taxes. Shameful.

What a coincidence that every pro-gun argument I've seen on Fark in the last few days has been debunked by @pres_bartlet over and over again.

This is a tough one. Mom was a gun nut and had a house full of guns that were probably easy to access. Then again, the old ban didn't do much to curb gun violence and now the NRA has more ammo for the next election cycle.

2012-12-19 04:37:57 PM
This isn't going to be pretty.

2012-12-19 04:38:58 PM
Oh FFS, calm down you douchebags. There is an entire universe between confiscating all privately owned guns and reasonable restrictions to keep bugfark crazy people from getting a hold of them. But hey, if your going to act like a paranoid nutcase just maybe would should consider taking a real close look at you.

P.S. Stockpiling while the adults talk this over is only going to make it worse.

Ammo, yes.  But they might end up shooting blanks.

"52 of Americans polled favor major restrictions on guns or making all guns illegal. "
"62 percent support a ban on semi-automatic assault guns and also high-capacity ammunition clips. "

Yeah, it's not like anything unusual has happened recently.

Wait, let me guess: this crazy 20-year-old was doing this under orders from Obama, so he could make a grab for the guns.

Anyway...this is farking stupid.  Democrats are being as irrational as farking Republicans over this shiat.

"OMG 20 KIDS DIED WE HAVE TO BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS"

"But like 10,000 people died from handguns this past year.  95% of gun-related deaths are caused by handguns, 5% from 'other.'  So why aren't you trying to ban handguns instead of 'assault weapons?'"

"BECAUSE ASSAULT WEAPONS ARE SCARY HURR DURR"

I need a vacation from this country.

neritz: "62 percent support a ban on semi-automatic assault guns and also high-capacity ammunition clips. "

THAT MAKE NO SENSE

WTF IS AN ASSAULT GUN?

and who still uses clips?

Did the original assault weapons ban teach us nothing? language matters and using terms the wrong way makes laws ineffective.

clip and magazine are not the same and the current definition of "assault rifle" is purely cosmetic meaning two internally similar guns with similar lethality but different external features will be treated differently

Rather than try to slog through his five billion tweets I tried the googles.  The only stuff I found were articles posting the same information.  Didn't even hit anything on Snopes.  Do you have a link to something other than dude's 140-character word farts?

The 2009 National Crime Victimization Survey has different data.  Link

There's also 2011 FBI UCR data here. Link

Which says:   Information collected regarding type of weapon showed that firearms were used in 67.7 percent of the nation's murders, 41.3 percent of robberies, and 21.2 percent of aggravated assaults.

Then there's this table, also from 2011, that breaks down murders by state and weapon.  Link

To quote a different fake Aaron Sorkin President:

"Everybody  knows America isn't easy. America is  advanced citizenship.   You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's    gonna put up a fight. It's gonna  say, 'You want free speech? Let's  see you acknowledge a man whose words  make your blood boil, who's standing  center stage and advocating, at the  top of his lungs, that which you  would spend a lifetime opposing at the  top of yours. You want to claim  this land as the land of the free,  then the symbol of your country can't  just be a flag; the symbol also has  to be one of its citizens exercising  his right to burn that flag in  protest.' Show me that, defend that,  celebrate that in your classrooms.   Then you can stand up and sing about  the land of the free."
- President Andrew Shepherd

And that goes for the second Amendment as well.  If we truly claim to be a free country, then we have to accept the fact that certain crazy people will do crazy things, try as we might to stop them.  They always have.  They always will.  We can't give up our guns just so we can force crazy people to make bombs, or poison, or a dozen other ways that crazy people will attempt to kill us.  Certainly we have to work harder to stop crazy people from getting their hands on things that will kill us.  We have to work harder to fix the brains of crazy people so that they don't want to kill us.  But we can't take away the tools that gave us our freedom in the first place.

That's the thing. For those little kids to be alive, I'd give up my guns, my car, every materiel thing I hold dear. Every right I now enjoy. I'd give it ALL up.

That wouldn't have stopped this godawful thing from happening though. It won't stop it from happening again.

Out comes the "nothing can be done" defense. America is truly exceptional except when it comes to gun violence, then we are uniquely helpless to even attempt to reduce it.

Things can definitely be done which will actually affect future problems.  Banning assault weapons is not one of them.

STFU. Anyone with half a functional brain knows that another assault weapon ban is feel-good, do-nothing legislation. Some of the other stuff in the article is what's worth talking about.

tobacco busts into an elementary school and kills 20 kids?

or does it just slowly kill people that willfully used it themselves?

2012-12-19 06:20:36 PM
If you didn't want him coming for your guns, maybe you NRA types should have endorsed half way legislation.  But nope, you had to block everything, and none of you are proposing anything yourselves, just screaming no like some two year old.  So let the people who are proposing actual ideas about keeping kids from being pointlessly killed do the talking for a while.  If you have anything to actually contribute besides a grand no to trying to stop kids getting killed, let us know.

Please tell me what will work. What we have already done has not. Not at all. Not even a little bit. Give me a solid, fact based initiative with a shred of scientific evidence behind it and I am all for it.

That's why we did away with speed limits long ago.

There are no speed limits? They HAVE gone up, and safety HAS gone down. Maybe I am missing your point there.

Truth be told, you really haven't made a point of your own, just disagreed with everyone. I paid for an argument.
