This is why organ donation should be opt-out in the US.  If you're so paranoid that you think you'll end up in a Robin Cook novel, you can put it in writing in your medical records that you want to be buried with all your parts intact and not helping others.  But the system's default should be that if you're brain-dead and two doctors NOT on the transplant team declare you to be gorked, they can start typing tissue and getting you into the system.

This case is a double tragedy because there are so few donor organs that they have to use smokers' lungs.  Pathetic system.

I understand certain religous hang-ups (Christian Science or Orthodox Jewish) for instance  but otherwise it baffles me why anyone WOULDN'T be a donor.  I am not my body, and when I'm done with it your are more than welcome to make use of any spare parts as may be salvageable for medical purposes, nutrition or even sheer amusement.

Agreed.  And with the religous hang-ups (which I have no problem with)... they just need to be told how to opt-out, and that its required as part of the church.

I knew someone who wouldn't be a donor because she was convinced that the emergency doctors let people die just so they could harvest the organs.

annnd?  If you are so bad off that it's an open question whether you are brain dead or not, that's ain't likely something you are gonna "get better" from. So if you croak today or next week the only difference is the size of your hospital bill.   As my mother the nurse has yelled at more than one over-eager Intern at her hispital "You really think I need to take a dozen blood sample to determine what's wrong with a 90-year old man with a failing heart?  What wrong with him is that he's dying-something he's okay with and you're not"

So what a great opportunity to place our bets. 18 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant. Do you think 18 people per day will be declared dead when they weren't? Because if it's less than 18, it seems we should hedge our bets on being organ donors seeings how it would be more likely we'll need an organ transplant to save our life someday than be killed by a doctor.

It used to be a little, since some Christian demoninations believed in the literal ressurection of the body on Judgement day, they believed you had to go intact or spend all eternity with missing parts.   But the Catholic Church, at least kinda pointed out that since our bodies will have rotted away to bones by then anyway, it was kinda silly to think that if God was making you new flesh anyway, he wouldn't spot you any parts you might also be missing.(yes I'm fully aware of the irony of using logic on a belief like that ) and pointed out that since Jesus was all about "be nice to each other and do what you can to help your fellow man", that he'd probably be happier if you donated your organs rather than let them rot

So for the most part I agree with you guys. But it's not as open and shut as you make it. She probably should have been given the choice "hey do you want this smoker's lungs, they may have had cancer so it might only give you 16 months." If nothing else, when she said yes, she would have known to keep an eye out for the rest of her life for symptoms of lung cancer. Perhaps the malignant mass would have been found sooner and been treatable.

I assumed they did check them for cancer and it was not visible at that point. It's possible only one or two cells were cancerous when she got the transplant. Your immune system helps keep cancer in check, and transplant patients usually get immunosuppressants to prevent organ rejection and etc etc. I'm not blaming the hospital, I just think they should have informed the patient about the important aspects of the organs so they keep an eye out in the future.
