Every now and then I try to imagine an internet without adblock and it's just horrible.

I should throw those guys a donation.

That should insure that people stop using Facebook at work at least.

How about a fun Flash game where I have to shave Britney Spears' head?  That's a fresh idea.

If Adblock Plus on both desktop Facebook and mobile Facebook doesn't work on stopping them then I'm dropping Facebook.

Oooh, but then you'll get pleas from Drew and company to turn off your AdBlock Plus since they need your eyeballs to feed the squirrel - as if they aren't making money off of TFers.

And that's why I'll stick with Firefox, even though it is supposedly worse than Chrome. Adblock+NoScript = delightful browsing.

Auto play videos were the reason I stopped going to ESPN's website a good 8-9 years ago, or whenever it was. I haven't been back since.

And now that I'm getting to the age where my facebook feed is no longer full of hot young coeds in various states of undress, but rather stupid people and their stupid babies, I don't need too much of a push to either deactivate my account or just never log on.

Autoplay ads? Yeah, that.....that would do it.

A better headline would have been, "People to actually consider using Google+ in 2013."

One of these days I'd like to see a well-written, unbiased article about whether or not autoplay ads work.  Mostly because it'd be great to shove in the faces of those who think they're a good idea in the first place.

I mean seriously, a couple years ago they posted that "please disable adblockers" and the first thing that happened after I did was a loud buzzy sound and my antivirus popped four warnings. Then early this year they said again, "We've been careful to make sure nothing does that kind of thing" and within a minute of turning it off, my mouse rolled past something in the sidebar and an ad filled my window. And just a couple months ago, I gave it chance #3 and again, within a minute of turning off all the blockers, I got a "PLEASE TAKE OUR SURVEY" right in the middle of my window.

Screw that noise.

I'll turn ad block off on Fark when we stop getting greenlights for shiatty Gawker, etc "articles" that are nothing but a few sentences and a link to the real article. And begging for ad views when you redress the whole site as one big advertisement for a video game/movie doesn't give me faith that the ads I'm currently blocking aren't annoying.

I actually tried whitelisting Fark in adblock when I saw that request. Didn't help; evidently I'd also have to un-NoScript a bunch of other third-party sites, and that's not going to happen. So now I get the nag bar every time, and I'm already starting to get over it.

I'll repeat my standing offer to sign up for a year of TotalFark as soon as I can do it through someone other than PayPal. Until then, I'll stay in Liter land and save my dollars for occasional sponsorships of other deserving folks.

In my case, the military is doing all the food stealing. When I'm at home, I don't mind ignoring the Delta ad.

I'm in the same boat. I disabled adblock because they asked nicely. The ads, however, are not so nice about it.

Ah... thank you! -- also, Adblock has a nifty feature to just click on the item and put the filter in for you.

I like the add-on ' yesscript ' for sites that are a nuisance with stuff. Instant blacklist of javascript for that site only. How many 'please take a survey or ask the chat agent for help' popups can you have in 1 fecking minute?

Worked great on one of Diggs many programming clusterfecks where they implemented bloody Iframes for the links page(stay on our site but see the other site in this framed window). then they changed the Digg program again and the Iframes worked but with a 3 inch tall window with the linked page in it.

/' flashblock ' for the win on flash video windows.

2012-12-19 01:38:46 PM
As long as they don't ad an annoying banner on top of the page begging you to turn off adblock so they make more money. That would be really annoying and make people install noscript.

2012-12-19 02:19:34 PM
I would strongly consider turning off Adblock on Fark if the ads weren't animated. I find them too distracting.

2012-12-19 02:30:01 PM
I can handle some ads on the sidebar, I never mind Fark's as long as they don't intrude on the space that I'm actually interested in. I'll even now and then click through them if something I was going to buy anyway is being advertised (usually some Amazon deal I've already looked at and just haven't purchased yet) because, well, I like this website and if it gives em a few pennies, I'm good with that.

That said, auto play anything, ad or news story, pisses me right off, and I'll usually avoid those sites like the plague. ABC News, I'm looking at you. I can't imagine there's anybody on the planet that doesn't find it highly obnoxious.

/Favorite Fark ads: Large chested T-Shirts. At least I think that's the name of the company.

Good god, this will be awful. Considering how much I post on FB, you'd think they'd know more about my tastes. Instead of getting ads for the companies I like, I get ads for the companies my friends like, which means Walmart, Tide, Samsung, and other things I'll NEVER buy/patronize. And don't get me started on the unrelated sponsored items in my feed. Who the hell is Best Foods, and why is their crappy chicken and broccoli hot pocket thing in my feed?! I make better food than that at home!

/no really, I make really good turnovers. Yesterday I made sausage and egg turnovers using Pillbury buttermilk biscuit dough. MMMMM!

Or not. Thanks for the TF, downstairs.

I run NoScript without Adblock, and that takes care of the nuisances quite well (except for the new nag bar). Static ads don't bother me, but there's no farking way I'm letting ad networks run active content in my browser. If it wasn't for YouTube et. al., not to mention cluelessly designed Flash-dependent web sites (hello, 2003 called and wants its gee-whizzery back), I'd have yanked Flash long ago. I've already disabled Java in the browser.

Still, the best solution for Facebook is what I do: not use it at all.

I got the message from Fark to turn off my adblockers. I emailed Farkback that if they would just serve up static ads instead of resource hogging Flash ads, then I would whitelist Fark. The reply to me was it wasn't really possible to only serve up a certain type of ad, plus Fark gets more money from the Flash ads. Too many Flash ads seem to crash Chrome every so often, it's annoying.

I had Fark whitelisted until one year they ran god damned horribly-coded Flash ads for some 4th of July crap that pegged my CPU at 100% for 20-30 seconds, then crashed Firefox, every single time I saw them. And they appeared on every page load, no exceptions. Plus they were ugly as hell.

Thanks a lot Fark, now I see that the mobile site is starting to have sporadic video ads that take up a quarter of my screen. Not sure if they auto mute, but they definitely auto play. Now I'm trying out Firefox for Android since chrome for Android doesn't have plugins. So no more blinking credit score banners or ads that don't size down to the mobile page properly. Can't control your ads? I'm turning them off then.

Nice of Google to bake Flash into Chrome (along with the rest of the kitchen sink...).
