Honestly this sounds like business as usual.
If you asked me for a budget increase of XXX dollars, I'd ask you to include interest payments into your estimate as it reflects the real cost.
If I asked you to cut XXX from your budget and you can back to me with a slightly smaller number telling me the difference will be in savings in interest, I'd be all "ARGGGG" You used my logic against me, sorry but I'm asking for cuts of XXX not counting interest you sly weasel.

Here's the thing about math: it's supposed to work for you, not against you. So, clearly, if the math is not helping you arrive at what you would think no matter what, you must substitute the old worn-out math for a shiny, new math. After all, new wine does not work in old bottles and neither should new math be judged with the math of the past.

The GOP is wise indeed. It'll be fun to watch the sissy dem-o-rats flailing about with their old and tired math. It is no match for the new and improved GOP math.

People seem to be a little befuddled about the "fiscal cliff". The fiscal cliff is about the government spending too little and taxing too much -- paying off the debt too quickly. There is some worry that paying off the debt too quickly will cause a recession. Being against the fiscal cliff is being in favor of running up a higher public debt.

The CBO and GAO 'made' that chart. Not sure if they keep inflatables at the office or not. Wouldn't suprise me if they did.

For the last four years the repub strategy has been to refuse to discuss the issues, ignore unpleasant facts and lie their asses off. Then they resoundingly lost an election where their main strategy was refusing to discuss the issues, ignoring unpleasant facts and lying their asses off. Now, with the fiscal cliff looming, their strategy is to refuse to discuss the issues, ignore unpleasant facts and lie their asses off. One can't help but wonder how they will deal with any new problems that may arise. Could it be to refuse to discuss the issues, ignore unpleasant facts and lie their asses off?

Governing a country this big is already a challenge. Doing it without the assistance of the opposition party makes it twice as hard and doing it while the opposition party actively works to make things worse is incredibly difficult. I imagine there have been periods of similar intransigence by the out-of-power party in our history but I'm hard put to think of them. The last time a major political party tried this hard to impede the people's business, the result was the Civil War.

Just how much did our interest increase due to the debt-ceiling impasse? (Please note that I used the term 'impasse' rather than hostage-taking to assuage the butt hurt of any 'fiscal conservatives' who might read this).
I have no hard figures (I don't feel like doing the research) but I'll bet you could buy a lot of nice stuff with the extra amount of money we're now spending because of the GOP's intransigence.

2012-12-19 02:56:21 PM
There's a difference between reporting savings due to reduced interest payments and claiming them as spending cuts.

It appears that Boehner wants Obama's minions to compare spending cuts to spending cuts, not interest reductions, when comparing plans. Apples to apples.

Then why does the interest obligation still amount to about $450 Billion per year? Don't forget that is alost 20% of the entire federal tax revenue.

Also realize that these low interest rates are not likely to stay low forever, especially if we cannot get our deficits under control shortly.

I don't think at all. From what I have seen, the impass did not impact interest rates at all, even though we were downgraded some.

Uh, as a percentage of GDP, Japan's debts are over double ours. They enjoy extremely low interest rates. Why would you suggest we wouldn't?

Japan does not have Republicans who do not understand economics pushing ideological policy that is detrimental to their economy?

rohar: Uh, as a percentage of GDP, Japan's debts are over double ours. They enjoy extremely low interest rates. Why would you suggest we wouldn't?

Ask the CBO and GAO. They are the ones that came up with the numbers. However, part of it could lie in the fact that Japanese debt levels have been financed by domestic investors and backed by about $15 trillion in household savings. There are news reports out there stating that the increase in foreign ownership (which is happening as folks are avoiding EU based bonds) could make this debt more susceptible to yield spikes if non-residents start asking for a higher return, posing a problem for the government.

Overall, it is a market item and that is very unpredictable. Where it goes, no one is very certain.

With all of that said, realize that low interest rates here does not necessarily tranlsate into low interest obligations. Japan's total interest obligation eats up about 50% of the country's revenue.
