That's actually fairly restrained behavior for the average Australian. He's probably had a lot of anger management classes or something.

A former friend of mine got kicked off a flight as it was boarding on our way home from a golf trip to Myrtle Beach quite a long time ago (pre-9/11). There were about 8 of us on that flight and after his belligerent behaviour got him kicked off, he asked the flight attendant if any of us would deplane and stay with him.

None of us did.

Taking a trip with a group of friends and it turned out that one of them, a law student no less, had a stash of weed in his shave kit. He was genuinely surprised that they found his bag of weed because, as he put it, he didn't think they'd look there.

Oh they didn't just look in his shave kit... "Grab your ankles and say 'AH', boyo."

But we more or less did the same thing. Stupid farker thought it was a good idea to bring a bag of herb on a flight? You're on your own, Chief.

Dump 60,000 litres of fuel? Divert to a closed airport? Fark that! Put him in the straight jacket that is on-board every commercial airplane, strap him in nice and tight, and keep on trucking

That's about 15800 gallons. A gallon of fuel is about 6.2lbs. That's almost 100,000 pounds. I'm guessing you are correct.

He's a smoker? Shouldn't we regulate smoking and make tobacco use on airplanes illegal to prevent this kind of thing once and for all?

Because the plane is too heavy to land with full fuel tanks.

I would say just garnish his wages for the rest of his life, but I'm going to take a wild guess & say he's not the type to seek or have regular employment.

So they should have just let the crew & passengers beat him with gym locks stuffed in socks.

That's fair... but did they just... dump fuel? Does the plane have an emergency hatch to release its tanks?

Is runway length a factor? Or are fully fueled planes generally too heavy to land on runways they just took off from? Genuinely curious.

Generally, a commercial airliner will not land on a runway that's not designed for for heavy aircraft. So, in this case length of the runway most likely is not a factor. What is a factor is the fact that while the landing gear is rated to land fully laden, it's not a good idea. When possible, if it's not an emergency, they will either burn off or dump fuel to get to a certain landing weight. Otherwise, they may damage the aircraft.

I'd tell you to search Youtube for "airplane dumps fuel" but it will just lead you to a bunch of chemtrail videos.

But yes - the fuel is released through nozzles on the trailing edge of the wings.

Yes, the maximum take-off weight is higher than the maximum landing weight. Landing fully fueled puts too much stress on the landing gear.

And that is another thing that stresses me about flying, they're making plane parts that are only good when a plane is not as heavy as it is taking off. I wouldn't drive a car with brakes that didn't work until I warmed them up after travelling a certain distance so why should I accept a flying bus that does the same? It's not like you can just pull off the side of the freeway when something goes wrong
And I can tell when my bus driver is too sozzled to be driving
