I feel bad for Tim, he got a bad deal with the Jets. More than likely he is not a quarterback who will take a team deep into the playoffs, or make the playoffs most years, but I would like to see him get a chance. He deserves it. Passing statistics aside, he is 8-6, with 1 playoff win and 6 game winning drives. He plays a dynamic game, similar to RGIII, minus the speed, arm strength and accuracy, but he competes and can do just enough to win football games. I would give him two years to prove himself.

2012-12-19 10:53:35 AM
So he really thinks he's an NFL quarterback?

2012-12-19 10:59:49 AM
What, you mean a mediocre QB with a slow release and who can only run for first downs reliably isn't doing well in the NFL?

Who could have seen that one coming.

Up in the Northwest we lived through four years of Jake Locker, he was every bit Tebow but didn't have a great college team around him.  Big kid, great heart, can't read a defense if you spelled it out for him on a whiteboard.  Picks up lots of yards on broken plays and single coverage and QB running.

Will be a career backup, or out of football in 5 years, just like Tebow will be.

If you want to know how well a QB will do, learn to pick up on how many seconds it takes them from the moment they drop back to the moment they release the ball, accurately.  A great QB its 2-3 seconds if need be.  Guys like Tebow and Locker its 5-6 or they're off because the pocket won't hold up that long.

Second thing to watch, see if they ever look off a receiver or stare a hole in the back of the primary guy's head.  Great QB look off second nature.  Mediocre QB stare at one guy most of the time.

Third thing to watch, see if the QB looks like he can throw without a full wind up.  Many great QB look like they're throwing darts, at least for the 20-30 yard passes.  Bad QB, even ones with great arms (Vick comes to mind) had to always full wind up on every throw.  Which if you think of it is telling NFL defenses where the throw is going 1 second sooner.  Its all a great defender needs to read the QB and break a step sooner and break up the pass / pick it off.

So the next time a new can't miss QB comes out, give these critical looks a try and see if it doesn't help cut through the crap.  I've been watching QB critically since the 1980s, we had a bunch of new QB in the class of 83, plus the West Coast offense was brand new in the midwest, so we had all these guys attempting to be the next Joe Montana, with varying results.   On TV they all had talked to Walsh and his coaches lately, so they talked on TV about things like "release point" and "3 step versus 5 step drop" quite a bit.  Don't hear it much discussed any more, and I can't help but wonder if the whole class of QB like Tebow, Locker, RG III means they've forgotten what actual QB skills look like .. all these guys would be a "meh" under this kind of evaluation.  But maybe the game's changed enough to where they can succeed now, doubt it though.

2012-12-19 11:00:36 AM
That's a fair demand, when you are listed as #2 on the depth chart but the coaching staff seems adamant about skipping over you and going straight to #3. If they were honest and listed him as the #3 QB (meaning he wouldn't dress for the game unless he also played another position), this may not have happened.

Oh, Khan wants Tebow badly, as he knows that will be a quick way for the $$$$. Unfortunately, the rest of the organization, including the coaches, can't stand Tebow. It will be interesting to see who wins out here.

"I feel bad for Tim, he got a bad deal with the Jets."

I don't feel bad. Tebow picked NY to go to when he had Jacksonville as the other choice, and I'd bet his agent pushed him to go there (especially since Tebow and Ryan have the same agent). Tebow chose... poorly and that's all his fault.

Whats the rule for wild cat QBs. I know you can't bring in a third unless injuries, but if they listed him at RB couldn't he take snaps as the wild cat while being 3rd on the depth chart?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tebow PICK the Jets over Jacksonville last year? Don't see how he has a lot of room to complain. Sanchez is terrible and bust, but top 10 picks tend to get a lot of chances to turn it around.

Of course, anyone could/should have known Sanchez would be a bust. He started for one year in college, as a freshman, and becomes the #6 overall? Insanity.

They got rid of that rule before last season and made the active gameday roster 46 instead of 45.

What's funny is that as a butthurt Pats fan, I would like to enjoy in some schadenfreude regarding the Giants playing a horrendous game on Sunday and thus putting themselves in a flighty playoff position, yet, the Jets suck so bad, and so hard, the G-men are almost completely off the hook right now.

They did away with the emergency QB rule around the time the Dolphins resurrected the wildcat. Any QB on the depth chart can play at any time as long as they're suited up

As much shiat as we give to the Vikes for Ponder, he can at least handoff the ball. Farking Graham Harrell almost cost us a home game..

Pretty sure they changed that last year. They upped the active game day roster to account for it as well. The Jets could play Tebow if they really wanted.

Thanks guys. I hate when I have to admit I don't know a rule and wait for scorn and belittlement from those who actually know it, but you were kind.

Nonetheless, that means they could dress 3 QBs if they made roster room then?

He's a gamer. When he accepts the idea that he'd make a serviceable TE, H-back and/or special teamer who occasionally takes a snap here or there, he'll be better off and employed.

But, at least when he was with Denver, it did seem like he was money in the red zone.

Are you a tebow fan because he is deemed as a stand up human being, or because you think he is a good quarterback. If it is because you think he is a good quarterback, please give me the name of your dealer. He is an extremely overrated quarterback with a fanatic fan base. The reason FTFA is that if they allow him to start the final two games, the TeTards will come out in full force demanding he get a shot to start next year.

I'm not a teebow fan but I don't get where the subby is calling him a whiner, he has had little playing time while the jets starting QB is a disaster.

He also got screwed because the owner traded for him, nobody from the front office to coaches wanted him, and he doesn't fit their offense at all.

He seems like a nice guy but he really needs to consider switching to TE or FB/RB, hell if he could be gotten cheaply let him come to Atlanta and get Tony to teach him how to play TE. Any team would be crazy not to want a positive attitude in their clubhouse, most players would have been screaming by the 3rd game because they weren't being used at all.

Denver had a weak-ass schedule last year, what with playing the AFC East (only the Patriots can put up a fight), and being what was it, #3 in the division the prior year? Also, the AFC West sucked (sucks).

But Tebow will never be an H-back. He wants to play Quarterback. It's what gives him the biggest spotlight. That's why he picked NY over Jacksonville. He needs the spotlight to send his religious message. For him, winning isn't converting 3rd downs, it's converting people to his particular brand of Christianity.

2012-12-19 11:22:30 AM
I'm trying to think of any time in NFL history when a starting QB from a playoff team was traded to another team--any team--to essentially be a #3 on the depth squad, behind a #1 who's had one of the worst seasons of any NFL starter in recent memory and a rookie who got enormous plaudits for a 5-10, 27 yard performance in relief simply because he didn't suck as badly as the other two. I've seen incidents where the GM traded for a player who the coach simply refused to play, but most of those times those players were benched behind solid starters.

It's almost as if Tebow was brought on by the Jets for the sole purpose of filling up talk radio time. I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN was paying part of his salary.

ChrisDe: So he really thinks he's an NFL quarterback?

As much as he annoys me, he also took a team that Orton was 1-4 on and went 7-4 and won a playoff game.  That makes him better than a bunch of the QBs playing today.  And after being passed over as the #2 QB, I'd ask to be traded too.

Ha! I was exaggerating a bit, trying to be funny. Certainly Tebow is nowhere near as physically gifted as RGIII but clearly he is not without athletic ability. Like Doug Flutie, (who I am also a fan of, must be an underdog thing), I bet Tim Tebow could have a winning record and a couple of playoff appearances in this league, as a quarterback.

/Disclaimer: would not take him over Romo, quarterback for the team I follow.

My roommate asked me last night why the Jets don't play Tebow more, even at TE or RB. Other than not knowing if Tebus can catch a wrench ball, I'd argue that it's because he sucks at QB. He can run the option, but he's otherwise far too slow in his decision-making and his release. How's his escapability in the running game? In college, he could get the edge reliably, or bang through the middle for a tough yard or two - the NFL has bigger, meaner and faster guys to clog holes and break the edge.

On Monday, it looked like he could get the edge on an option play here or there, but without the threat of a serious pass (as a means of moving the ball in general, but also any throw beyond 8 yards), D's would be wise to stack 9 in the box until Tebow makes them pay for it.

A QB who practically writes your defensive game plan for you is not a good play in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. <\Gruden>

// did anyone else like how openly Tirico/Gruden/ESPN was ripping the Jets/Titans game for being 3 hours of suckball?
