The kid was dressed like a lobster. What the fark did that idiot French Canadian dad thinks was going to happen?

2012-12-19 12:31:23 AM
that is amazing. the fact that it happened, and the fact that it was recorded. nobody would believe that story otherwise.

I'm also glad that the kid was wearing some some-what padded clothing, for the sake of the grab... and then the subsequent fall.

sorry eagle, not yours.

Eagles get uppity when you pass laws against shooting them.

Meh. Large (well, larger and extinct) birds of prey used to do this all the time to early hominids. Not surprised that they'd still try to do it.

2012-12-19 12:50:04 AM
And thus the bird wars begin.

The set of ginsu knives was more of a danger than that fall. Just be glad the kid was a little too heavy for the eagle, the web has conflicting reports but young deer ~15 pounds have been carried away before. Wikipedia states that it was only a myth that eagles stole children.

16 comments and no one is saying it's fake yet? Seems like exactly the sort of thing someone would fake. Not saying they did cuz I'm no expert on pixels, but I'm surprised no one has suggested it.

Golden eagles are pretty psycho. They'll take on honey badgers, throw goats off cliffs, kill wolves, and just generally have the biggest balls in the avian world. I am not surprised in the least that one would go after a human kid.

/Figurative balls, of course.

Food is food.

My wife was walking her mini (5 lbs.) poodle one day when I noticed a turkey vulture circling overhead, gliding lower and lower with each pass. I yelled at it and it went away. Damn poodle isn't the least bit grateful.

Well, I found one immediately from Iowa in 1910 that I wouldn't dismiss out of hand here. There are hundreds of these. I would say that its certainly possible, certainly happened a few times, but isn't by any means normal. My own feelings on the "myth" is that its sensational enough for people to be aware of it generally, but it becomes confused with bird attacks which happen more frequently and as yet another socially acceptable allusion to infanticide.

My brain took a whole minute to find Willow. My friend and I were just talking about the reissue and how it Lucas wanted to do The Hobbit but couldn't get the rights.

All right. This video was probably an hoax for these reasons.

1. It didnt make the news in Montreal. And this was shot a while ago since we have a few inches of snow on the ground at this point.
2. A 3d animation school in Montreal has a "hoax the internet" exam. Last year they produced this bit: Hoax
3. Eagles arent common in Montreal, they are more common outside of big cities and ive seen big ones at my camp, 400 km away, but not that big. Even the ones that are kept in the zoo, here, arent that big. Certainly, an eagle this size would have been caught on camera before and attracted some attention.
4. Note the lack of interest in the other pedestrians. They should look an probably point at the huge eagle.
5. If an eagle was out trying to eat stuff that big, there is plenty of dogs to go around and certainly people would have talked about that huge eagle eating their dogs while they were walking them.

Basically, this is a huge eagle that would have been seen before and documented. And since there is a 3d animation school that has a "hoax the internet" exam, im calling bullshiat.

I'm pretty good at spotting shiat.. and this looked real to me.. and that video you linked to looks obviously fake.. big difference.

According to some guy on youtube, these eagles go after prey up to 33LB.

I guess I'll be the one.

It's FAKE.

Am I a truly terrible person for hoping the eagle would pull it off? It's not that I want the kid to be harmed, but at the same time I was all, "Damn eagle, you're kind of a p*ssy."

2012-12-19 05:49:05 AM
WTF is wrong with you people who think it's funny? Amazing? Sure. Scary? Yes. Fake? Perhaps, I'm no expert on pixels either, but funny it is not.

Raptors are perfectly capable of picking up small animals and a baby is nothing but a small animal to them. It's no different than a rabbit, a cat, a gopher or whatever. It's made of meat and meat is food.

If it's fake that's a nice touch filming the ground and not getting a perfect shot. I've been fooled by fake videos before, but this looked real.

Something just doesn't look right with the dive and swoop... too smooth or something... I'm going with fake.

golden rule of motion photography: if something incredible is taking place in the viewfinder YOU MUST immediately either jostle the camera about maniacally or behave as if you aren't at all aware a motion camera is in your possession.

Plus, it looked like an Osprey, only way bigger.
