My town has a local tea party chapter. The fliers they put up before every meeting have nothing to do with taxes, and generally include words that would get filtered on Fark...

1. His parents divorced in or around 2009
2. the father went out of his way to ensure hey paid much more than the minimum requirements
3. the father was not interested in custody of his minor son
4. the mother was collecting TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR alimony
5. the mother WAS TRAINING HER SON, ADAM, to use HER assault rifles at firing ranges, in 2009 at least
6. the mother was BRAINWASHING her son -- while raking in 289f*ckingthousanddollarsayear with BS fairytales on the collapse of civilization

Mr. Lanza has the deaths of 25 innocent people on his hands, and his nuts couldn't possibly be as huge as his dead son's.

Yeah, it's the Dad's fault. No, wait--It's the Mom's fault. No, wait--it's the assault weapon's fault. Shiat, I cant keep track anymore, just tell me who I should hate and what needs to be banned. Thanks.

Never.

There is never ANY disaster, of ANY kind that doesn't have a precursor event. Even earthquakes, we just don't know how to read them very well yet. Whether it's some nutjob killing dozens of people (any time, anywhere), a plane falling out of the sky, or the most skilled and coordinated terrorist attack--there are numerous warning signs, and plenty of opportunities to avoid whatever disaster it was.

We as a society choose to ignore them at our continued peril.

Bath is one of the creepiest places I have ever been to. It's like the school bombing put some sort of curse onto the place so that the only thing that looks nice and kept-up is the bombing memorial and two relatively new schools right across the street. Everything else is just run-down, dreary, and deserted.

Also, for some reason that I absolutely cannot figure out and can't possibly be related to modern political discourse at all, the traditional narrative that Kehoe was mad about the high property tax assessments that ended up bankrupting him is being replaced by a new, more nonsensical account of him being upset at losing the race for township clerk, which he only ran for so he could lower taxes anyways. Don't believe me? Go compare the last revision to the Wikipedia article from before last Friday to the current one. I wonder what suddenly compelled people to change the established facts and motive behind something that happened 90 years ago?

A community voted to tax itself for a modern school. Destroy the school, and the kids, so they won't need to replace the school?

They're politics' version of juggalos?
Taxes? Really? Not murdering foreigners in large quantities?
They're unintentionally hilarious?
There's no discernible end goal?
You pay the rich corporations' taxes anyway when they pass the cost on to you without advertising it?
People with free time to protest and rally others to protest are receiving government assistance?
It's really funny?

So
I have a friend. I have known him forever. 30+ years. We joke about him being the next Unibomber.
What do I do?
He hasn't killed anyone yet.
He hasn't threatened to kill anyone yet. (other than his completely rational HATE of chicago cops!!)
He hasn't shared his manifesto, yet.
He pays for things in cash, which is legal.
He owns guns, but so does 50% of america.
He owns dogs too.
He hasn't broken any laws.
But he is also the person that I know who is mostly likely to go unibomber.
(You will all get to see me on national news going "Eyup. We always knew that he would pop one day.")

so
what do I do?
What do any of us do?
We all have someone like that in our life.
The more than slightly nutty. The right on the edge.
If I knew he was buying bomb materials, boom, I would contact the FBI.
If I knew that he was making a hit list, boom, FBI. Unless he was planning on killing those rape-american GOP candidates, then I would wait until he was done to turn him in.

so
what does anyone do? we turn away and do nothing.
I would lose him as a friend if I reported him. He would probably die when they attempted to arrest him.
fark

time to have this conversation with my family and friends. the people who know him.
But what about the rest of you? What would you do?
And what will you do today, concerning your nutty uncle/friend/brother.
You know the one.
The one most likely to go postal.
