she's probably right that it was fixed... she just should have been more clever and gotten them to pay her to shut up, rather than this insane result---that a single person somehow owes five million dollars to this ridiculous organization.

I think the idea is that after the surgery, the former he is, by most accounts, a woman. She has the right equipment. She doesn't have the wrong equipment. And in her head, she's always been a girl anyway. As expressed in the headline, everything about these contestants is fake anyway; this really isn't that big of stretch.

1.) I would not object to this. Do the rules specify sex or gender?

2.) Female sex or female gender? Are biologically female trans-gender individuals (trans men, I believe, is the applicable term) allowed to compete, and if so, are you okay with that? Even if they have undergone sex reassignment surgery and to all appearances look biologically male? If you think they shouldn't be allowed to compete, why not?

Also, along those lines, what about someone with Swyer syndrome or Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, where they have the XY genotype but develop a mainly female phenotype (due to improper or lack of expression of the SRY gene in the former or cells not responding to androgen hormones like testosterone in the latter)? Are they allowed to compete?

/meh... such pageants are stupid anyway, but it's kind of interesting to see the system shaken up a bit as traditional notions of sex and gender become less and less applicable in modern society

So once again the question arises: Are beauty contests purely about aesthetics or are they genetic screening?

Because if it's just about presenting the right package, then anyone or anything that can compete should be allowed. And the winner could have all the work done necessary to achieve the ideal of beauty and grace that the title demands, regardless of whether the start was a hottie that needed just a bit of lip gloss or a buck-toothed lardo with a horse face that got chopped or a man who had a woman trapped inside and had a full re-sculpt done and hormone treatments or a team of MIT geeks build the perfect robotic woman who can stroll across a stage in a gown or swimsuit, flash a dazzling smile, purr out safe, bland answers to questions and twirl a flaming baton while doing the splits.

If it's about genetics, then NO physical modifications should be allowed. IQ and coordination tests should be the focus of the question and answer and talent portions, and as was done in the early days, exacting measurements should be taken, including full pedigree back at least four generations, medical history, DNA analysis and psychological profile. Also, no drugs or cosmetics or structured garments -- in fact, no garments at all -- should be allowed. And then the winner should be given extensive training to fulfil her potential before being installed in an important and valuable job that best utilizes her aptitudes while being used for breeding, or at least having stem cells and an ovum or three harvested for archiving.

Agree! With horses, for example, there are breeding classes and beauty classes. If one shows a stallion or a mare, for example, they are judged on those things that will pass on to their offspring. There are also classed for "produce of dam" and "get of sire" which judge how well the parents do pass their genetic material. Then there are gelding classes which are purely based on how good the animal looks and moves.

So we need to define what kind of contests these are. If they are strictly for beauty, anything goes and judge the package as presented. If they are about genetics, then winners should be expected to at least have their genetic material put into a breeding pool. We could do the same thing with men. We could design a super race! Think of the possibilities!

Also, if they're about genetics, we need to start judging the parents. Instead of a single woman or man being evaluated, we need to judge the entire family. We could make a rule that an individual would not be allowed to enter a genetic contest unless they had at least 2 siblings who were willing to enter the contest with them. We could screen families for outliers such as mental illness, gross deformities, or other physical defects. We could even eliminate entire families for the wrong religion.

Yes, there are real possibilities in your idea, Grotesk! I salute you!

I've met Ms. Monnin in person many years ago. Yes, she's had work done, but the drastic stuff was on her body, not her face. Facially, in person, she's pretty stunning, in my opinion. I'm not saying she should have been in the top five or anything, but there's no question in person that she's a beauty queen.

More importantly, she's actually a really nice person. She's not a crazy party girl - she's reserved, quiet, likes to read. Her parents are well off but I doubt they're going to fork over $5 million... hopefully she can appeal the ruling with someone who's not an arbitrator, or declare bankruptcy. I still kinda believe her, actually - Trump used to have a clause in the rules that he could put anyone in the top 15 that he wanted and it quietly disappeared a few years ago. I'd bet it really didn't disappear.

Yeah, Miss Texas USA won Miss USA five years in a row in the late 80s. Their nickname is the Texas Aces. Not being from Texas, I remember being so mad about it growing up. That was before Trump bought the pageant though.
