What about Jor-El, Martha and Thomas Wayne, and the Castle family?

2012-12-18 08:11:59 PM
Weird twist.

We had it pegged that Pete was taking the dirtnap... but we were certain they were going to bring either the Scarlet Spider (long-shot) or Eddie Brock (remember: The Avengers revealed they could MAKE ANOTHER SPIDER-MAN if they needed to) into the red-and-blue.

But... DOCTOR FARKING OCTOPUS?!

They brought back Peter's parents in the mid-90s. They were simulacrum.

I'm one of those poor sad fools who collected all of the Spider-man titles all the way through the Clone Saga... all three years of it. It was a combination of refusing to cancel them and I didn't realize just how bad it was at the time. At least they had a great ending to it by bringing Norman Osborne back.

This actually sounds like a pretty cool idea, and yeah, I really don't get why people are SOOO bent out of shape about something that's going to be reversed in 2-3 years. (Probably, sadly, just in time for the second movie since Marvel still operates under the delusion that movies drive people to read comics).

Also: I seriously doubt sales will tank, the only time that ACTUALLY happened was after the horrific One More Day storyline. Remember when fanboys were going to boycott the entirety of DC's New 52 line and it went on to sell better than any titles in the past few years?

moothemagiccow: What about Jor-El, Martha and Thomas Wayne, and the Castle family?

Martha and Thomas both came back for Flashpoint, Jor-El's come and gone a number of times, and the Castles ...well the Castles are still pretty much gone. The saying USED to be Uncle Ben AND Bucky, but then Ed Brubaker showed us that retcons can be AWESOME with the whole Winter Soldier storyline.

They ran basically the exact same plot with Captain America and Red Skull, so I'm not sure why people are pissed.  That said, this is exactly the type of final revenge a comic book villain like Doc Ock would do.  I think it's fine.

No matter how amazing or emotional the story line in any comic series is it's going to be retconned eventually so what's the point? That's what I always come back to whenever I'm even slightly temped to get back into comic books. Instead of rebooting 80 year old superheroes every generation create something new and when you kill them off actually mean it. Those would be stories worth reading.

I don't get why people don't get why, even after it's explained.

Personally, I don't think it's such a cool idea, which is what I'm hearing. Yes, LOTS of comic series get some big ol' change like this, but many times it's just a bad gimmick. Electric Superman? Powerless Wonder Woman? Multiple-origin Wolverine?

I remember when some readers were up in arms about the change to the Black/Symbiote costume, but the writers really made it work, and it's had a lasting impact on the universe. How many gimmicks are forgotten, if not despised, years later?

Fine, it's just temporary, but in 2 - 3 years, that could make a reader go from 20 to 23 years old, and not be able to read about a particular character.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about your typical superhero comics now:

I just don't know how you can keep ongoing stories going for decades without things eventually getting stupid. You eventually either have to just reboot everything, and even that has diminishing returns like we saw with the New 52. I'd much rather have series that have a beginning, middle, and an end, with the creative team putting them to bed when they run out of stories to tell. It makes for much better storytelling than this shiat.

They certainly aren't afraid to kill people in the Ultimates Universe.  So far they've killed Peter Parker, Cyclops, Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Abomination, Angel, Beast, Bishop, Blob, Daredevil, Doctor Doom, Doc Ock, Doctor Strange, Emma Frost, Gambit, Hank and Janet Pym, Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, Juggernaut, Kingpin, Kraven, Red Skull and Sebastian Shaw.

I agree completely. I love the characters, but I gave up trying to keep up with storylines that involve multiple titles, years of history, and random retcons. I've gotten so much more enjoyment out of just following relatively standalone series. Speaking of which, Walking Dead really needs to wrap up soon. Its getting pretty repetitive.

2012-12-18 09:52:42 PM
Man, this is why I read Marvel Adventures.  Yes, it's for 10 year olds, but it's funny, it's actually quite well-written, it doesn't have continuing storylines to keep track of, and it DEFINITELY doesn't have huge cross-title "world-changing events" that mean I suddenly have to read up on 4 other comics I don't normally give a shiat about.

I preferred Gwen to Mary Jane always. I wished she had been resurrected. Then i read the comics where the Jackal did just that. Sometimes, dead is bettuh.

Rule of thumb: if you die as part of the origin story, you are deader than a doornail and will not be resurrected.

I love the interview btw (i think it's included on the under the red hood dvd) where they talk about the death of Jason Todd, and one of the writers at the time discussed what a big deal it was, and how it would be the sleaziest, cheapest thing ever to bring him back)

I'm not sure you can count limited resurrection where the character comes back for like an issue or two. I seem to recall a spiderman where uncle ben came back for just one afternoon to see a mets game with Peter. Frosty the snowman revivifivation isn't quite on the same level as say, bringing back Harry Osbourne with a wink to the audience "I was in France for a couple years. Sheesh, you leave the country and people start declaring you dead and stuff"

Hopefully. The reason I resented One More Day is that it short circuited what i imagined to be an interesting arc for Peter, namely, that his villains knew who was. It was AWESOMe to see Doc Ock do the math and realize that he had been bested by a mere boy in their first encounters. That could have been worth several years of good stories, once Civil War wound down and Parker didn't have SHEILD backing him up, with all his enemies gunning for him and everyone associated with him. As Osbourne would have said: IT WOULD BE A BLAST!

Not surprising and pretty stupid. I also think some of this is pretty creepy and tasteless, namely Peter reliving Doc Ock farking Aunt May in the past. How many people are you going to just gross out into quitting the book? It sounds like Spider-Clone Saga 2.0. Are they going to be able to even do this for a year if the response is the same as last time? There's so many better ways to have someone else fill-in.

Since Marvel is running the "Everyone Is An Avenger!" idea into the ground, a Secret Avengers with Flash/Venom and Eddie Brock: Spider-Man would've sold more issues than there are trees in the world.

Some enjoy the experience. Sadly however, the amount of titles I buy have went down drastically.
I'm still buying the Lantern titles, (Green, Red, etc, etc), Deadpool, and the Marvel Comics Captain Marvel, but that's about it. May see how Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt plays out but I do know there's a lot less books in the old paper sack when I leave the store than there used to be.
New 52 Supers as well as the rest of the titles just haven't caught my interest, Lanterns excepted of course.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Doc Ock was dead in the 1990s, and replaced by a woman. So why the problem this time out?

I guess all I can say is, get over it fanboys, the big two will reboot everything in six months and none of this will have mattered and you'll have wasted money on meaningless stories that weren't even that good.

Wat? I've been told repeatedly that the stories after One New Day were some of the best ever*

Is that not correct? I only dipped in, saw things like female Kraven, Jackpot, Mayor Jameson, and shrugged. Oh, also female Hobgoblin. Has there been distaff Vulture, Rhino or Fancy Dan? Perhaps they can do them with different ethnicities or something.

lol, and there you have it. Marvel's 'greatest' ideas of late have been swapping genders and ethnicities. It's been a pretty farking pathetic grab for market share in the name of 'diversity'.. They aren't gaining new readers, they're just alienating the ones they already had. Not that DC isn't guilty, although less so, of the same thing.

To be fair, the stories post-OMD are good to great. That's not what made OMD so bad. It was because the plot holes it created just so that Joey Cheese could make Peter single again, when he could have just have Peter and MJ divorce or kill her off. Instead, he has Spider-Man make a deal with Mephisto to save his dying Aunt's life by erasing Pete's marriage to MJ from history. Funny how that nobody else in the Marvel Universe could cure an old woman of a bullet wound, huh?

The female Kraven is the original's teenage daughter, pushed into the role by her crazy mom.

There is a new Vulture, but he is a former mobster that was experimented on and given wings, claws, acid spit and a taste for human flesh.

The "female Hobgoblin" was actually called "Menace", and it wasn't revealed to be a woman until "he" was caught turning back into Harry Osbourne's girlfriend. She stumbled upon Norman Osbourne's secret lab and was accidentally exposed to a variant of the Goblin Formula.

As for the Rhino, he retired and got married, while a new guy took up the mantle. Then Kraven's daughter goaded him into hunting the original Rhino and murdered his wife to push him to fight back. This pissed him off enough to kill the new Rhino and take back the name.
