Dr. Whoof: KidneyStone: Darth_Lukecash: Slavery and treason are not honorable nor laudable.

Neither is pissing on state's rights.

You doooo know that when the war broke out slavery was only prohibited in the Confederate states?

Oh really?

"Between 1777 and 1804, anti-slavery laws or constitutions were passed in every state north of the Ohio River and the Mason-Dixon Line."

Maybe read a history book not printed in Texas once in a while.

I'm not sure I've ever read a history book from Texas but surely it would include in New Jersey, some slaves were held as late as 1865 Same goes for Kentucky and Delaware.

The more you know.

The thirteenth amendment, abolishing slavery, was passed by the Senate in April 1864, and by the House of Representatives in January 1865.[95] The amendment did not take effect until it was ratified by three fourths of the states, which occurred on December 6, 1865 when Georgia ratified it. On that date, all remaining slaves became officially free.[96]

Legally, the last 40,000 or so slaves were freed in Kentucky[97] by the final ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution in December 1865. Slaves still held in Tennessee, Kentucky, Kansas, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Washington, D.C., and twelve parishes of Louisiana[98] also became legally free on this date.

What is your farking obsession with that flag.. it has nothing at all to do with race and yet in the past few years you have convinced yourselves and every other liberal democrat dushbag that it is some sort of silent symbol to bring back slavery or something. I was born and raised in the south and am 6th generation Texan and I know I could never convince you complete idiots it has nothing to do with race. To us it is just a symbol of the south.

Oh and here it comes where a bunch if complete brainwashed circle jerk idiots will tell me what it really means to me.

Dirty history everywhere. But only some places celebrate it.

There are few idiots who celebrate it. There are more idiots who want to point at it and act as their state never did anything wrong, or doesn't have idiots left. Which state has the most hate groups?

By raw numbers, probably California or New York due to high population. I'm going to guess Idaho if you're going per capita.

It's California by far. But of course, this is a Southern problem. Race gangs have their strongest hold in CA.

The board's decision to ban the flag comes in the wake of a May incident in which a racial epithet, "KKK" and the words "catch em, kill em" were inscribed on an African-American teacher's door at Hays High. Two male students, then 14 years old, were charged in connection with the vandalism and the teacher, who had announced her resignation prior to the incident, left the district.

Melissa Deichmann, who spoke to the board with her daughter, Tiffany, a sophomore at Hays High, countered that the students were also accused with vandalizing other parts of the school.

"It was not just racial," she said.

Deichmann described her family's deep southern roots, telling trustees that her family fought at the Alamo and that her son, who graduated from Hays, is proud to be a Rebel.

Tiffany Deichmann told the board that she loves the Confederate flag, and that she wants her school ring to have the flag on it.

No, hon, it wasn't just racial. It was racial AND stupid.

WTF Texas?

And this is taking place near Austin....I thought that was a thinkin' part of Texas.

You will find douches even in San Francisco. It's a couple of kids doing something stupid, and the media wants to rile you up about it.

San Francisco has more douches per capita than any other place I have been to around the world.

"you sure are light skinned for a mexican" when heard speaking spanish in San Fran.

"you are pretty brown for a southerner" when saying I was from Louisiana.

"oh, you must be puerto rican" when seen dancing to a bit of salsa.

So being Colombian and Italian from the south, made me some sorty of anomaly in the bay area.

Growing up in the deep south, no one ever asked me why i was olive skinned, accused me of being a mexican or a puerto rican.

If you're as old as I am, it's probably because they assumed your grandmother "was an Indian princess" as claimed by every brown eyed white person I went to school with. The ground must've been thick with ...

Oh yeah, I remember this during the 80s. EVERY poor white AND black person I knew had "Indian" in them, and some people (especially the ghetto kids) went out of their way to ridicule actual Africans...I mean, there's self-loathing and cultural pissings, but WTF?

Yes, the south that tried to secede from the US and hang on to slavery a little longer. We know you see it as a symbol of the south. We just don't understand why you would want to advertise that?

Hmm...a few years ago (when Georgia was FINALLY changing their flag), there was a contest from Architectural DIgest, off all mags, to design a new flag. Some of them were pretty amazing, and would've been great to 'rebrand' southern regioanl pride. Instead the got the damn Six Flags thing.

The Proclamation applied in only ten states that were still in rebellion in 1863, and thus did not cover the nearly 500,000 slaves in the slave-holding border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland or Delaware) which were Union states - those slaves were freed by separate state and federal actions. The state of Tennessee had already mostly returned to Union control, so it was not named and was exempted. Virginia was named, but exemptions were specified for the 48 counties then in the process of forming the new state of West Virginia, and seven additional counties and two cities in the Union-controlled Tidewater region.[8] Also specifically exempted were New Orleans and 13 named parishes of Louisiana, all of which were also already mostly under Federal control at the time of the Proclamation. These exemptions left unemancipated an additional 300,000 slaves.[9]

Rent Party: NephilimNexus:
I have always said that the greatest mistake Grant ever made was to not hang the entire Confederate Command staff in front of Appomattox Courthouse. We put up with it because we decided to treat the treasonous bastards like prodigal sons instead of... well, treasonous bastards.

Half-sister of Mary Todd Lincoln, Emilie (Emily) Todd Helm first came to the White House in December 1863, accompanied by her daughter Katherine. In March 1861, President Lincoln had offered her husband, Ben Hardin Helm, the job of army paymaster, which he declined. He instead became a confederate general. Ben Hardin Helm, was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. Upon learning of Helm's death, Lincoln reputedly wept and said, "I feel as David of old did when he was told of the death of Absalom."

After Helm's death, his widow, Emilie Todd Helm, visited Abraham and Mary Lincoln in the White House. This created a stir in Washington, and newspapers complained when Lincoln's rebel sister-in-law visited. Later, when Emilie was seeking the president's permission to travel into the Confederacy to sell cotton, she reminded Lincoln that Union bullets had made her a widow and her children orphans, so Lincoln bore the responsibility to help her. Although Lincoln was the Union commander-in-chief, most of his inlaws, the Todd family of Lexington, supported the Confederacy. Few families were immune from the divisions of the Civil War.

The war pitted brother against brother. Literally and figuratively. Hanging confederate officers would not have helped with reconciliation.
I would rather reserve hanging for true traitors like the Rosenbergs.

Just to be clear:

Ban a book because we don't like the attached message: BAD!
Ban a flag because we don't like the attached message: GOOD!

We related?

Not sure anybody said to ban the flag (since it still exists)... just not a good idea to be on school property (like a lot of other things)... except to clearly identify the morons

Benjamin Orr: You said "Between 1777 and 1804, anti-slavery laws or constitutions were passed in every state north of the Ohio River and the Mason-Dixon Line."

implying that all Northern states had banned slavery (which they did not).... as evidenced by the fact that quite a few of them still had slaves up until after the war.

He is a moron for saying only the Southern states dealt with slavery before the war and you are not being honest when you say the North got rid of it.

I never said that. Those words were never typed. You assumed it. All I did was post a quote and link directly refuting said moron.

I'll ask again, is what he said correct? And is the quote I posted false?

You know what, never mind. Just understand you spent a great deal of time and energy defending a statement that you yourself just admitted was wrong.
