Dr.Mxyzptlk.: buckler: "Can I not be proud of my Southern heritage?" she asked, invoking her great-great-great-grandfather, who she said was a captain in the Civil War.

Sure. Go ahead and burn as many crosses on the lawns of black folks as you like. (eyeroll)

Thanks for the history lesson. I was unaware that every single person living in the south owned slaves.

Those share croppers must had had it made in the shade. Funny how the history books always leave out the fact that every single person had a slave. Right ?

64% of the population of the south was in slavery in 1860. So while not everyone was a slave holder, there were a hell of a lot of slaves.

I love how southern treason apologists like to make excuses for their heritage, and its obvious moral failings.

The board's decision to ban the flag comes in the wake of a May incident in which a racial epithet, "KKK" and the words "catch em, kill em" were inscribed on an African-American teacher's door at Hays High. Two male students, then 14 years old, were charged in connection with the vandalism and the teacher, who had announced her resignation prior to the incident, left the district.

Melissa Deichmann, who spoke to the board with her daughter, Tiffany, a sophomore at Hays High, countered that the students were also accused with vandalizing other parts of the school.

"It was not just racial," she said.

Deichmann described her family's deep southern roots, telling trustees that her family fought at the Alamo and that her son, who graduated from Hays, is proud to be a Rebel.

Tiffany Deichmann told the board that she loves the Confederate flag, and that she wants her school ring to have the flag on it.

No, hon, it wasn't just racial. It was racial AND stupid.

WTF Texas?

You will find douches even in San Francisco. It's a couple of kids doing something stupid, and the media wants to rile you up about it.

San Francisco has more douches per capita than any other place I have been to around the world.

"you sure are light skinned for a mexican" when heard speaking spanish in San Fran.

"you are pretty brown for a southerner" when saying I was from Louisiana.

"oh, you must be puerto rican" when seen dancing to a bit of salsa.

So being Colombian and Italian from the south, made me some sorty of anomaly in the bay area.

Growing up in the deep south, no one ever asked me why i was olive skinned, accused me of being a mexican or a puerto rican.

Ever encounter "nice racism"? My first experience was in Alameda CA. I worked for Sears carpet cleaning right after high school, and Oakland was my given area. This nice old lady and her son greeted me at a house in Alameda that had a huge flea problem. As soon as she saw me shouted "I didn't know you were going to be Mexican!". She then told me if she knew that Sears was sending a Mexican she would have made some burritos for me. Then her and her son told me all about how they lived in Mexico for a couple of years back in the 70's, and knew what it was like to be Mexican. She then asked if i wanted to stay afterwards so she could show me her famous beans and rice.

/I got out of there as fast as i could.
//Another guy i worked with got refused at the door for being Mexican
///Guess my experience was more pleasant than his, but still retarded

Once you step out of Travis County, the derp gets pretty thick. I grew up just an hour north of Austin and I remember this being a popular shirt when the movie, Malcolm X, was released:

Neither is pissing on state's rights.

You doooo know that when the war broke out slavery was only prohibited in the Confederate states?

THIS again??!? OK, one - no self-respecting southerner (these days) would EVER consider Texas part of the southern US. It's Texas, alright? Texas. An'd I looking REAL hard at Oklahoma.

Two - there are GREAT things about the south! I've met evil rednecks all over the country, from upstate Maine to backwater Alaska, which In suppose would include the governor's mansion.

YES, there are lots of small towns - same thing in Washington state. Get outside of Seattle and you will find rednecks farking everywhere. NO ONE with half a lick of sense defends the confederate flag. Please remember that.

first amendment bro.

I know it doesn't apply here since schools are basically prisons.

Rufus Lee King: Hey! Great! Let's not stop at half-measures, though. Why not destroy all the Confederate monuments at the Civil War battlefields. Oh, yeah, let's bulldoze the Confederate cemeteries as well. Who cares about desecrating the graves of traitors? Public rallies could be held to burn any books by Civil War historians that we don't like.

I'm not addressing any amendment rights or freedoms to display what you want.

To be proud that your ancestors fought to keep people enslaved and used as property. And that you farking LOST should be enough that flag represents the WORSE time of your area, not the BEST.

"Southern heritage"...

Can we just stop with that BS? Please? That flag that you're so proud of doesn't (or shouldn't) reflect your "heritage". You want to show pride in your birthplace? Learn how to make biscuits and gravy like your grandmother used to make, and STFU about how the treason flag somehow makes you proud to be... to be what, exactly?

muck4doo: //Another guy i worked with got refused at the door for being Mexican

Clarified. That was at a different house. His assistant was black, she let him clean the carpets, but refused the Mexican guy. To their credit, Sears told us if we ran into anymore of that shiat we could refuse working there. The vast majority of Oakland wasn't like that, just a few asshats though.

And you doooo know that the only "states right" that those treasonous states had issue with was the right to own other people as slaves, right? Why, they even went so far as to have their legislatures write out in great detail what their cause was.

Mississippi's was the best, I think, and the most clearly stated...

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world."

Ah yeah, I love the smell of states rights in the morning. It smells like.... slavery.

UNC_Samurai: detritus: Spanky_McFarksalot: did they ban it in 1965? if not, headline makes no sense.

A little history education goes a long way (and the Confederacy, too).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinker_v._Des_Moines_Independent_Commun it y_School_District

Tinker co-exists with Bethel v Fraser (1986) and from Bethel comes Morse v Frederick (2007). Bethel allowed the school to censor non-obscene sexual innuendo, and Morse allowed the school to prohibit the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner as reasonable under the drug policy.

Bethel was decided because that individual at the assembly was intending violating a school rule stating, "Conduct which materially and substantially interferes with the educational process is prohibited, including the use of obscene, profane language or gestures." The district won because it amounted to verbal speech that was not constitutionally protected.

Morse allowed the school to prohibit the banner because it promoted illegal behavior. Reprimanding a student because of a bumper sticker on his vehicle has nothing to do with the disruption of the educational process. A sticker in no way can be interpreted to be a promotion of illegal activities under Bong Hits for Jesus or an obscene gesture under Bethel. The confederate flag has historical, educational significance especially in the South, no different than the Gadsden flag in the colonies.

It's nice to live in such an enlightened age...... At least, I think.

Will our heirs look back in 50 years and wonder why our society and media ignored black homicidal pathologies? Will they wonder why we chose to allow large zones of our once great cities to become no-go zones for the children of the people that built them? Will they wonder why our troops were patrolling on the other side of the planet while blacks in our cities were murdering hundreds of their neighbors a year?

Lincoln never intended to end slavery in states that had decided for it. He believed that it would eventually die out, left to its own devices.

However, what was in contention was the Territories. And that slavery life would be extended.

The south decided to fight the North. They lost.

So fark your state rights...especially if you think you have the right to treat other humans as properties.

A couple months ago, I visited South Carolina. I found myself in a shop that was draped with Confederate flags, and filled with racist anti-Obama bumper stickers and T-shirts. I found copies of both the Turner Diaries and Little Black Sambo, American Flag panties and bikinis, camo suits and plenty of pro-gun propaganda, a zillion beer cozies with the stars and bars, and none of it seemed to engender any "pride" or respect for history at all. Just revulsion and disgust.
