Not to make it mandatory?

FTFA: Tiffany Deichmann told the board that she loves the Confederate flag, and that she wants her school ring to have the flag on it.

I'm sure the Stars and Bars will look very nice on a graduation ring:

You know, the Germans had the decency to ban the Swatzika flag after WWII.

Slavery and treason are not honorable nor laudable.

Someone told them the flag was retarded and they immediately voted to execute it.

did they ban it in 1965? if not, headline makes no sense.

I was shocked when I moved to northwest Washington State and saw some trucks with the rebel flag. I soon learned that one of the tiny neighboring towns was founded by people from North Carolina. They even do Civil War reenactments.

/too funny since WA State didn't participate in the Civil War

"Can I not be proud of my Southern heritage?" she asked, invoking her great-great-great-grandfather, who she said was a captain in the Civil War.

The war is over. You lost. Let it go.

Perhaps subby is confusing the passage of the Voting Rights Act with the abolition of slavery? Hell, I dunno.

ACLU Lawsuit time! My principal banned Tool shirts (even with just the letters "tool") because she interpreted it to be a promotion of sexual innuendeo, even though it's a rock band. Retards who interpret the confederate flag to be about racism is a direct result of idiots who have no understanding and education of the confederate government. Yet, Texas seems to bring up the topic of secession more often than anyone else. This is farking bullshiat any way you cut it.

It also isn't remotely a freedom of speech issue.

No, no, no. Hear her out. She want's to be proud of being on the losing side of owning people as property. Her grandfather was a failure who fought to dehumanize others. That makes her proud. It's a heritage she is glad to own.

Still doesn't make any sense. That decision was related to black armbands protesting the Vietnam war and wasn't actually reached until 1969.

Fellow Republicans and Tea Party Patriots I wholeheartedly urge you all to stop with the racism because you are making us all look bad and keeping us from being able to do what we need to do in order to save our nation from this revolution of socialist ideas and talking head politcians on CNN. I may be Republican like many conservatives claim to be but I am not a racist and I find it offensive because my mom had out of wedlock sex with a Mexican man and that is why her family basically sold her to my dad's family to get her out of there so she could live a normal life not a Mexican life and it didn't work out so well because her life has been a living hell because my dad's family is full of low people who drink a LOT so it's not always worse to be with a Mexican.

RTFA. It happened in December 1965. It took 4 years before SCOTUS ruled against the school district and set nationwide precedent.

Tinker co-exists with Bethel v Fraser (1986) and from Bethel comes Morse v Frederick (2007). Bethel allowed the school to censor non-obscene sexual innuendo, and Morse allowed the school to prohibit the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner as reasonable under the drug policy.

Her great-great-great-grandfather would probably be ashamed of the fact that a female relation was voicing her opinion in a public forum and voting.

FTFA
The board's decision to ban the flag comes in the wake of a May incident in which a racial epithet, "KKK" and the words "catch em, kill em" were inscribed on an African-American teacher's door at Hays High. Two male students, then 14 years old, were charged in connection with the vandalism and the teacher, who had announced her resignation prior to the incident, left the district.

Melissa Deichmann, who spoke to the board with her daughter, Tiffany, a sophomore at Hays High, countered that the students were also accused with vandalizing other parts of the school.

"It was not just racial," she said.

Deichmann described her family's deep southern roots, telling trustees that her family fought at the Alamo and that her son, who graduated from Hays, is proud to be a Rebel.

Tiffany Deichmann told the board that she loves the Confederate flag, and that she wants her school ring to have the flag on it.

No, hon, it wasn't just racial. It was racial AND stupid.

WTF Texas?

And this is taking place near Austin....I thought that was a thinkin' part of Texas.

Or use this flag:

"But now, when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star."

Really, what rights?

"Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition."

It's not just the stupid vandalizing kids, it's the adult jackwagons at that schoolboard meeting crying about their lost flag.

I'm surprised they didn't sort out their logo and mascot decades ago.

I doubt "I support a group of terrorists who attacked the United States of America, and I want the attacks to recommence at some future date"* is covered by the First Amendment; Article 3, Section 3 might apply though ...

San Francisco has more douches per capita than any other place I have been to around the world.

"you sure are light skinned for a mexican" when heard speaking spanish in San Fran.

"you are pretty brown for a southerner" when saying I was from Louisiana.

"oh, you must be puerto rican" when seen dancing to a bit of salsa.

So being Colombian and Italian from the south, made me some sorty of anomaly in the bay area.

Growing up in the deep south, no one ever asked me why i was olive skinned, accused me of being a mexican or a puerto rican.

Thanks for the history lesson. I was unaware that every single person living in the south owned slaves.

Little known fact, there were so many people in the South that didn't own slaves and were anti-slavery that the South couldn't even field an army and the Civil War never happened.

Nobody's stopping Texans from erecting war memorials. Hell, they've got hundreds, maybe thousands of them. The flag of the confederacy is freighted with negative connotations, particularly for black Americans, and it is inappropriate to display it at schools or other government buildings. The war ended over a century ago, let it go.
