oh lawd.

I'd be more interested in whether having 6-year-olds contort like that is good for their physical development, but that's for doctors and scientists to figure out.

"They're not just teaching physical poses, they're teaching children how to think and how to make decisions," Ms. Eady said. "They're teaching children how to meditate and how to look within for peace and for comfort. They're using this as a tool for many things beyond just stretching."

How horrible! We can't have those kids look for within for peace and comfort!

I see we're all on the same page here. Too bad we couldn't have simulposted. Had we been meditating more, we'd have reached nirvana and synched up our etheric bodies. Or something.

Mary Eady, the parent of a first grader, said the classes were rooted in the deeply religious practice of Ashtanga yoga, in which physical actions are inextricable from the spiritual beliefs underlying them.

Now that's a stretch

Isn't this the reverse of the logic they used in one of the "school prayer" court cases? That atheists can "meditate" or "do nothing" during prayer times?

I don't know what that means, but fundies are dumb. This is the best chance they have of getting prayer back in schools, and they're too blinkered to even see it. Fark 'em.

Evangelicals are inflexible. That's news?

2012-12-18 02:10:16 PM
And there's that whole "opt out" thingy...

Obviously these evangelicals are trying to dissuade the libby lib kids from not being indoctrinated into their version of spirituality.

As long as it is just stretching/meditation there should be no problem.

Ms. Eady's argument reminds me of the more ridiculous arguments against rock 'n roll. You know the ones -- the Bo Diddley beat is "rooted in" African Orisha worship, therefore every time you listen to Not Fade Away you're going to invoke Legba or Baron Samedi or somebody.

Just goes to show how uninformed some evangelicals can be. Yoga is a meditative practice, not a religion.

Diogenes: Evangelicals are inflexible. That's news?

They need to practice yoga for that...

Mindfulness and metacognition are beneficial things, especially for children. Naff off, fundies.

So this year's Evangelical meme is that yoga is all about Hinduism?

Well, I guess they are getting feebler than their "every hobby is Satanism."

If they're so darn certain their religion is the right one, why are they so afraid of every other one?

2012-12-18 02:36:48 PM
Fundies have the right to turn their children into horrible, hateful individuals who are completely unable to peacefully co-exist with anyone different from themselves. And they're going to be damn well sure that the government doesn't do anything to interfere with that right.

It amazes me that these people think their god is all-powerful yet can be supplanted by stretching exercises.

Have the kids do some Christian exercises, too. For instance, they could carry crosses around the playground during recess.

This is old news to me. Back in the late 70's early 80's I was told over at my Pentecostal Church and over that martial arts, yoga, meditation, ect are all just secret Devil worship.

Ya, seriously.

It was evangelicals who wanted religion out of the schools to begin with. They didn't like the version of the Bible the Catholics were pushing.

To be fair, pentecostals have explained to me that catholicism and methodists are devil worshipers as well.
