Whiskey Dickens: BgJonson79:
So all people and cultures aren't equal?

Good point. I'm slagging a guy for ignorance while generalizing about his nationality. I shouldn't have done that.

I'm impressed ;-)

Artisan Sandwich: Being violent is easy.

Being compassionate is diffcult.

Really? I've been practicing both for a good long time now, and I've found compassion comes naturally and is generally rewarded, whereas violence requires a great deal of skill and effort, and is rapidly and effectively punished.

RTFA update ...

Though he wasn't an official Toys for Tots representative, he still thought he was doing the right thing. He claimed to be affiliated with the Marines.

CBS4 later confirmed officials with Toys for Tots said the man is now going to be a person in the their system legitimately gathering toys for the needy.

Marines -- the best image the US military marketing budget could create.

ITGreen: L Buff: ITGreen: I knew it was Boulder before I clicked it. How did I know it had to be Boulder?

Gee ... I wasn't aware that Boulder had annexed Aurora.

"Officials believe the man may have gone to multiple stores, including dropoff locations in Denver and in the Southlands area in Aurora, and pretended he is an official Toys for Tots pickup person."

That paragraph listed Boulder as among the locations this morning, smart ass. Not my fault you're late to the party.

Ooooohhh .. somebody's got their panties in a bunch today.

Forgive me for actually having a life and not being able to open every Fark item as soon as it's posted.

Highroller48: mr_a: Pray to whatever god...

No farking kidding!

Buddy's a dick an deserves to DIAF, but someone has an overblown opinion of Marines.

Contrary to popular myth, Marines are not super-human, or even any tougher on average than any other serviceperson.

You sound fat. And Army.
Redundant.

I'd rather have had a shiatbird in the suck covering my back than the majority of dog faces.

The US Marines are by in large honorable men that have done well to protect the USA and the ideals which it represents.

However, it's time to shut the Marine Corps down. It's a fourth wheel and an extra bureaucracy. All of the functions and units of the Marine Corps could be rolled into other branches of the US military with a net result of considerable cost savings. Additionally, it is highly likely that the US would have a more effective military if this were to happen due to knock-on effects from increased standadization and, well, less dead weight bureaucracy and coordination costs.

Study after study after study has shown this to be the case.

Of course, it's a non-starter as an idea as it's political suicide to mention such an idea due to the sloppy sentimentality of those who would argue against me all the while claiming not to be sloppy sentimental.

To be clear: I am not proposing breaking up indvidual USMC units where it makes sense to keep them. I am also not suggesting that the important roles that the USMC does now should go unfulfilled. I am proposing that the US does a better job of defending itself through a structural reorganization. the goal is to save lives, save money, and furthering our legitimate defense interests.

Again, there is no doubt that the USMC has played an important and heroic role in the history of the USA. However, the need for a specialized amphibious landing *branch of the service* has long been shown to be superfluous - at least since a "not small" operation was conducted basically entirely without USMC involvement. You may have heard of it - D-Day.

It's easier to knock someone out, stab them or shoot them in the face than it is to have mercy and try to understand them. There will always be a need for force, but it should be used cautiously and with heavy heart. IMO, this includes when you are dealing with truly evil acts (cautiously does not mean slowly)

I have met few naturally compassionate people, but that might be my line of work.

Haven't you guys seen Avatar?

Artisan Sandwich: studs up: Which unit ASandwich?

Rather than name a Unit- as I enjoy the anonymity of the interwebs- you'll have to take my word for it. Or, I can talk to you about rural Afghanistan ad nauseam; of which, over the last few years I have become quite familiar with.

a friend and co-worker of mine was in Afghanistan in the early part of the war (03 or 04)... had been Army Ranger, later Kentucky National Guard... came back home and went back to work in IT for 5 or 6 years, changed jobs so I didn't see him very often... took his own life this august. stay strong and if you feel like you need to talk to someone... for god's sake, do it.

Thank you for your well meaning support. I am just fine. I have been around the block enough to say with some confidence that -although everyone is different- people who have been subjected to and have inflicted violence tend to respect it a little more than most. The thought of being happy because someone was beat up or shot is strange to me. Even people that try to kill me have thier reasons for it and I'm just glad that their dead in the ditch and not me. I certainly don't celebreate it. The celebration comes from the young kids who are firing at real people for the first time and think it's so cool. After carting off a few of their own, and seeing some innocents caught in bad sitautions, they start to realize that war and violence is just primitive Man grasping at straws.
