Actually, my faith in humanity is always pretty solid in a case like this. That we have a Toys for Tots program in the first place is great, that it was only one dirtbag who stole from it is a little reassuring, and that everyone is now on the hunt for this guy is even better.

Don't let one turd ruin your trust.

I'm working Target Check Authorization, and I get a call. Starter check, $300, set off all sorts of flags. Account is for the fireman's Toys for Tots. Can't confirm the account (it had just opened), asked if one of them had ID that they were firefighters, they didn't. But they were buying toys, they were in fireman's uniforms, I let 'em through.

And if I let somebody steal $300 from Target, well, oops.

Back in November '10, I was staying at the same hotel a regiment of active duty Marines was celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the Corp. Talked with some of them - great guys, pretty humble. Thanked them for their service, even though I [am] Canadian. Commented on how it would be pretty much impossible for a chubby pasty guy to get any tail in a building full of Marines in their dress blues.

Reading that made me happy.

No no, it's OK that you like reading things like that! Just consider it... ...noted.

Good thing we have Snopes for this -- The actual story was that it was Tracey Attaway who was the perpetrator, who did, indeed, stab a Marine Cpl Phillip Duggan while trying to rob the Augusta, GA Best Buy. The Marines did apprehend him, but the injuries reported above were not real.

In case anyone wants to know what happened to Mr. Attaway, he was sentenced to life in prison after receiving the maximum sentence for the assault and theft because of his 30 prior arrests and his prior felony convictions.

A Marine collecting Toys for Tots donations at Augusta's Best Buy was stabbed in the back Friday while helping to subdue a shoplifting suspect.

Fellow Marines identified the injured man as Cpl. Phillip Duggan, 24, who spent part of Black Friday recuperating at Eisenhower Army Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Tracey Attaway, 39, of Waynesboro, Ga., was jailed and charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a knife in the commission of a crime.
Orvin Smith, a sales manager at Best Buy, said the incident occurred about 1:15 p.m. when a man was seen on surveillance videos placing a laptop under his jacket. Store staff asked Attaway to return the merchandise, and the situation began to escalate.
"He was really irate. A whole lot of energy. ... he finally let go of the laptop, ran out the front door, knocked one of my employees down and pulled out a knife so he could make sure he could get out the front door," Smith said.
Outside the door were four Marines and seven volunteers collecting donations for Toys for Tots.
"(Duggan) clotheslined him, and after that he kind up got up and started swinging a knife around," Smith said.
Gunnery Sgt. Robert Richie said Attaway "came over the top and got (Duggan) in the back."
Attaway ran again but didn't get far before Richie, several other Marines and members of the store's loss-prevention team tackled him in the parking lot and held him until deputies arrived.
Gunnery Sgt. Sherry Barrera, who also serves as the Toys for Tots coordinator, opted to close operations for the day.
"When a Marine gets injured, we just shut it down, go to the hospital, make sure he's OK and make sure he gets proper treatment," she said.
Barrera said Duggan joined the unit about three months ago. Although she has had the opportunity to drill with Duggan only a few times, she said she had heard wonderful things about him.
"My boss, who has served with him before, did say he was an outstanding Marine," Barrera said.
According to Richmond County authorities, Attaway also tried to steal two digital cameras, an Xbox game, a PS3 game and a PS3 game controller with a combined value of $1,365.

But i see you jumped right to racism.. interesting...

Q- Is it normal for ex Marines to just insult based on someones mother, or a sandy vagina?

A- Yes it is. The reason for this is they are generally less capable than others, and in order to compensate for their lack of intestinal fortitude and mental agility, they will often resort to senseless and ineffective name calling. They have purposefully created a culture that they think portrays them as hardened killers. In reality, they are at best ineffective, and at worst just cannon fodder.

I wrote this while annoyed, so I should temper what I said with some reason.

There are a lot of great Marines. There are some really poor ones. Anyone who has seen real violence (I'm thinking war, as it is the extreme end of the spectrum) would not be quick to glorify violence. For me, it's a sign that someone has done some training (like in this case) but never had to pay the piper with tears and blood. For the ones that have gone through that, only the psychotic would still cheer for violence.

/in my experience, the more capable the individual, the less they need to pose. You have my pity.

A1- Yes. When it seem to apply to the situation.
A2 - Mostly to those we hear say 'I was gonna join, but...."

No pity needed. I need no assurance of my manhood online. You?

Assuming you are a combat vet, and I respect the anonymity, then I agree that no one who is getting shot at wants to go to war. It's always the pogues. If you are trying to equate the ravages of war to a fake beat down of a douchebag, I'm not buying.
If you are not a combat vet and you are slyly side stepping to avoid the claim but still implying that you are, I hope you get raped by mountain gorillas. I'm assuming that's not the case.

The US Marines are by in large honorable men that have done well to protect the USA and the ideals which it represents.

However, it's time to shut the Marine Corps down. It's a fourth wheel and an extra bureaucracy. All of the functions and units of the Marine Corps could be rolled into other branches of the US military with a net result of considerable cost savings. Additionally, it is highly likely that the US would have a more effective military if this were to happen due to knock-on effects from increased standadization and, well, less dead weight bureaucracy and coordination costs.

Study after study after study has shown this to be the case.

Of course, it's a non-starter as an idea as it's political suicide to mention such an idea due to the sloppy sentimentality of those who would argue against me all the while claiming not to be sloppy sentimental.

To be clear: I am not proposing breaking up indvidual USMC units where it makes sense to keep them. I am also not suggesting that the important roles that the USMC does now should go unfulfilled. I am proposing that the US does a better job of defending itself through a structural reorganization. the goal is to save lives, save money, and furthering our legitimate defense interests.

Again, there is no doubt that the USMC has played an important and heroic role in the history of the USA. However, the need for a specialized amphibious landing *branch of the service* has long been shown to be superfluous - at least since a "not small" operation was conducted basically entirely without USMC involvement. You may have heard of it - D-Day.

It's easier to knock someone out, stab them or shoot them in the face than it is to have mercy and try to understand them. There will always be a need for force, but it should be used cautiously and with heavy heart. IMO, this includes when you are dealing with truly evil acts (cautiously does not mean slowly)

I have met few naturally compassionate people, but that might be my line of work.

Thank you for your well meaning support. I am just fine. I have been around the block enough to say with some confidence that -although everyone is different- people who have been subjected to and have inflicted violence tend to respect it a little more than most. The thought of being happy because someone was beat up or shot is strange to me. Even people that try to kill me have thier reasons for it and I'm just glad that their dead in the ditch and not me. I certainly don't celebreate it. The celebration comes from the young kids who are firing at real people for the first time and think it's so cool. After carting off a few of their own, and seeing some innocents caught in bad sitautions, they start to realize that war and violence is just primitive Man grasping at straws.
