Good idea. The last Gen Con I heard about was a virtual bloodbath.

Damn

I hate sites with the stupid and no comment section where I can subtly explain to them their wrongness.

I'd laugh, but this is sad.

As I told my mother when she freaked out about my interest in Dungeons and Dragons back in my teens: "Mom, the person playing has a choice to do anything like rape, loot, and pillage with their character. Do you really think you raised your son do anything but save the day by being the hero?"

Sherman Potter: Gross

He also claims that there is a rise in violent crime in the US and there's not.

/I read your books, Grossman, and you're wrong

What about reading violent books? I read for pleasure, and some of the books I read describe acts of violence - sometimes even in the 1st person. Is it going to turn me into an autistic savage, bent on mayhem and slaughter?

Gen Con is not a video game con. They have a presence there, yes. Why is the author treating it as such?

Can the author cite a direct example linking violent behavior to Gen Con?

Would Duluth turn down a sports franchise? Because people who go to those play the exact same kind of video games.

The author is an ass.

A study done by Craig Anderson and published in Glen Spark's book, "Media Effects," found the "exposure to violent video games is casually linked to increased aggressive behavior, increases in aggressive thoughts and feelings, higher levels of physiological arousal, and less helping behavior."

At least it's only a casual link. It'd be news if they could find a causal link, though.

How much violence do we suppose Gen Con has brought to Indianapolis?

People are panicking over violence right now. A town has been traumatized, and a nation has been traumatized by proxy. But recent trauma victims, be they people or societies, are not known for their decision-making capabilities. There's a reason people are advised to wait a significant amount of time -some say six months, some say a year- before making any important changes after something huge.

As the guy who brings the only video game to GenCon year after year, this makes me giggle.

getinthepods.com

I bring the BattleTech cockpits where you get to simulate driving a 30 foot tall walking tank to blow up other 30 foot tall walking tanks.

As we were once owned by Disney family members, I assure you that there is no blood or images of humans related gore in the BattleTech: Firestorm product.

When the 'Mech blows up, you are ejected and translocated into another 'Mech. Rinse, repeat.

This article has to be a joke.

Please let it be a joke.

I'm not a gamer or whatever the heck that person was wigging out about but please, internet, shame that "communications major" mercilessly until they have absolutely NO chance of acquiring a job in journalism.

So in the "studies" one was published in a book whose title reveals its bias, and another says that gamers "might" identify with the main perpetrator (totally unbiased wording there) in a game.

That's some quality research there Lou.

But I suppose that violent games "could" be corrupting youth and making them dangerous and terrible citizens. Just like:

heavy metal music
violent movies
violent TV shows
Teletubbies/Barney
cartoons
rock music
television
swing music
radio
...

/I'm a gamer and maybe I'm getting old but I don't recognize those much anticipated, cutting edge games

Well, Man, that would be like, your opinion.

What a croc o chit. Same respected medical source as, say, the Real Raped Womens Just Shrug It Off crapper?

If the Nannys could just demonstrate herding cats successfully before they try humans, I would feel so much better.

Smingleigh: The solution is simple. Reduce the XP reward for killing the locals.

That won't work, then they'll just have to kill even more locals to level up.

On a related note, here is a video I made regarding the origins of Gen Con.
