Snarfangel: Good idea. The last Gen Con I heard about was a virtual bloodbath.

sniderman: Godless Killing Machines
Sherman Potter: As Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's studies prove, "Video games that require the player to shoot a gun and react reflexively with the shooting responses are teaching an entire generation of children to associate shooting killing with pleasure."FTFY/and he's right
palladiate: sniderman: Godless Killing MachinesI've seen guys like that kill Krispy Kremes by the dozen.
Citrate1007: Duluth, you used to be so cool man.
Disgruntled Goat: Gen Con is not a video game con. They have a presence there, yes. Why is the author treating it as such?
Disgruntled Goat: Gen Con is not a video game con. They have a presence there, yes. Why is the author treating it as such? Can the author cite a direct example linking violent behavior to Gen Con?Would Duluth turn down a sports franchise? Because people who go to those play the exact same kind of video games. The author is an ass is a communication major at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Smingleigh: The solution is simple. Reduce the XP reward for killing the locals.
another cultural observer: What about reading violent books? I read for pleasure, and some of the books I read describe acts of violence - sometimes even in the 1st person. Is it going to turn me into an autistic savage, bent on mayhem and slaughter?
ArkPanda: Protip: Never play miniatures wargames with Marines who want to make the game more "realistic". I don't think your training applies to giant robots from the year 3050.
Bondith: Smingleigh: The solution is simple. Reduce the XP reward for killing the locals. That won't work, then they'll just have to kill even more locals to level up.

ArkAngel: A club I belonged to in college (Parkside Association of Wargamers) used to help run GenCon when it was run in Wisconsin.
dorkymidgetqueen: LOL WHUT???/go to gencon every year//to pick up guys
douchebag/hater: They need to bring it back to Milwaukee, where it belongs.
PropWashFarkingAround: As the guy who brings the only video game to GenCon year after year, this makes me giggle.[getinthepods.com image 301x400]I bring the BattleTech cockpits where you get to simulate driving a 30 foot tall walking tank to blow up other 30 foot tall walking tanks.
Gunthersan: The study by Endestad and Torgersen (Link) states that there is no proven causality between violent games and behavior. Never mind that tabletop games are the focus of the con.I grew up in Duluth. Jo strikes me as a backwater preacher of doom who is an insult to the otherwise cool people there. I gave $50 to the kickstarter, and I really hope a miracle happens and it reaches its goal.

taliesinwi: douchebag/hater: They need to bring it back to Milwaukee, where it belongs. The problem is, the hotel situation in Milwaukee still sucks - at least for the kind of hotel rooms you'd want to sell for a convention like this. The more immediate problem is there's no way Gen Con would fit in the Delta Center anymore. It would have to shrink by something like 20% to do so.And I say this as someone who lives in Milwaukee and loved driving ten minutes to the convention. And people I bump into in Indy who remember the Milwaukee days all agree that there's more character here. But it's simply bigger than the city can support at this point.
grokca: But the Guns and Rifle swap meet is still on,eh?
Mr. Eugenides: grokca: But the Guns and Rifle swap meet is still on,eh?Apparently it just ended. I wonder if they sold loopholes at the gun show. I hear they're popular.
KipsterMick: Hey guys - Berserkon organizer Kevin Mickelson here. Please please PLEASE do not take this person's opinion as indicative of the popular view. Everyone we've spoken to or heard from up until yesterday has been really excited and supportive of a gaming con in Duluth. I'm not sure what Jo's problem is, but she obviously didn't even read the Kickstarter page before firing off a response to the opinion piece I wrote in (the Dec 4 article referenced).
