How much violence do we suppose Gen Con has brought to Indianapolis?

People are panicking over violence right now. A town has been traumatized, and a nation has been traumatized by proxy. But recent trauma victims, be they people or societies, are not known for their decision-making capabilities. There's a reason people are advised to wait a significant amount of time -some say six months, some say a year- before making any important changes after something huge.

You would think that if they are using the violence that a gamer convention would bring as the reason for not holding it, they would have listed some actual info on the violence that other conventions generated.

A study done by Craig Anderson and published in Glen Spark's book, "Media Effects," found the "exposure to violent video games is casually linked to increased aggressive behavior, increases in aggressive thoughts and feelings, higher levels of physiological arousal, and less helping behavior."

At least it's only a casual link. It'd be news if they could find a causal link, though.

People get their panties in a bunch over crap like that. I read "The Stranger Beside Me" to Lil Bee aloud while pregnant....I mentioned that at work and like two or three coworkers flipped out. Seriously, as though an 8 month gestation baby follows the storyline? It was what I was reading at the time, and I figured rather that just chit-chat at the babe, I'd read to him. Clearly we need to limit dice to six sides. Why do you need twenty sided dice? Also, we need to eliminate game sales at conventions--it's just too easy for dealers to throw in extra game components and other goodies without doing a background check to ensure that the individual is at least 13.

The study the author cites. Doesn't really help their case or cover the underlying assumptions associated with Gen Con.

So in the "studies" one was published in a book whose title reveals its bias, and another says that gamers "might" identify with the main perpetrator (totally unbiased wording there) in a game.

That's some quality research there Lou.

But I suppose that violent games "could" be corrupting youth and making them dangerous and terrible citizens. Just like:

heavy metal music
violent movies
violent TV shows
Teletubbies/Barney
cartoons
rock music
television
swing music
radio
...

The author is ill informed. Gen Con is primarily a game convention for role-playing games, collectible card games, boardgames and miniature wargames. None of these are done in real time like video games. You have to use your brain, not reflexes. All of these require 1 or more human opponents.

If playing video games really leads to aggressive behavior, I sure wouldn't want to welcome that into Duluth, despite the prospective economic benefits.

Indiana can keep the Gen Con convention and the violence associated with video games, and we'll stick to Bentleyville's Tour of Lights.

Thank you, Tracy, for that informative presentation.

The problem is, the hotel situation in Milwaukee still sucks - at least for the kind of hotel rooms you'd want to sell for a convention like this. The more immediate problem is there's no way Gen Con would fit in the Delta Center anymore. It would have to shrink by something like 20% to do so.
And I say this as someone who lives in Milwaukee and loved driving ten minutes to the convention. And people I bump into in Indy who remember the Milwaukee days all agree that there's more character here. But it's simply bigger than the city can support at this point.

Hey guys - Berserkon organizer Kevin Mickelson here. Please please PLEASE do not take this person's opinion as indicative of the popular view. Everyone we've spoken to or heard from up until yesterday has been really excited and supportive of a gaming con in Duluth. I'm not sure what Jo's problem is, but she obviously didn't even read the Kickstarter page before firing off a response to the opinion piece I wrote in (the Dec 4 article referenced).

She wrote (poorly) in to the paper with the idea that she could convince people a convention like this would be bad for the community, but I'm much more concerned that she might have convinced those who might otherwise be interested that this is a bad community for a convention like this.

So, yeah. Every village has an idiot, and while I don't claim for a second that she's our one and only, she and any like her are still the exceptions to the rule.

For the record, it's not Duluth that doesn't want a gaming convention, it's one communications major who coudn't take the time to do five minutes of reasearch on what they're biatching about.

Duluth DOES appreciate gaming and wants a gaming convention! (and as an aside, knows what the hell they're talking about when they mention RPG gaming and video gaming).

Check out:

The city of Duluth is VERY friendly to gaming and nerd culture in general. We also apparently have college students who fail at the "research" portion of their editorial writing... (sigh).
