Yeah, lots of middle-aged sorts still go to goth clubs etc. For one thing, if you're atheist or pagan etc., it's one place no one will look at you funny. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that some mindless reporters thought he was somehow goth.

Wait... you're comparing an atheist to a goth?!? You think a typical atheist looks funny? How so?

More punditry RE: Geekery, amoks, and Newtown

Inevitable after any American massacre committed by a white youth is the inevitable effort to postulate the killer as a goth, a nerd, and an enthusiast of video games. It is a consistently false canard, but a myth that is endlessly and enthusiastically recycled.

As a standard part of our society's ritualistic rhetorical masturbation after a mass shooting, the named parties must now go out and declare: "he wasn't one of us'.

Speaking as an incompetent goth, an avid RPG player and LARPer, and one who has spent far far too much of his life pressing buttons, you know what I think?

I wish that Adam Lanza was a goth, and a Cammie, and a big nerdy RPG player who went to every con. And that his mother was too.

Having a social network certainly would help- a peer group. Knock geek culture all you want, but we are ultimately a social function even for the socially dysfunctional. The obsessive, the autistic, the callous, the clueless- all are welcome, at least for one gaming session. Tolerance of psychological and social shortcomings is one of the biggest virtues (and vices) of geekdom. Who are we to judge? People who live in wood houses shouldn't throw fireballs. Social belonging and cultural affiliation could have mitigated the psychosis of Mr. Lanza.

Even discarding the rosy idealism of 'love and tolerance', I'd still want Lanza to have been a big fat nerd. Because he'd be too busy buying M:TG booster packs, or collectible action figures, or reading Battlestar Galactica fan fictions. Something. Even if he was one of the crazier and more dubious extreme outcast fringes of the SCA, he'd be stocking up on chain mail and katanas, rather than semi-auto firearms.

Having an outlet like LARPing or Goth culture or role-playing games may not have made Adam Lanza a better person, or a more likable or more humane individual. But it would have made him a more harmless individual.

Because geekery ain't cheap. Whether it's custom clothes for cosplay or mercy or just attending events, you run up a tab and fast. And there's a significant time cost for such hobbies- which is time away from the gun range.

As a hypothetical example, were I, say, to make my crit fumble on a D20 and become infused with the dark spirit of Demogorgon- as is supposed to happen when you play Dungeons and Dragons- my subsequent rampage would be more hilarious than horrific. I'm sure many bruises would ensue as I hurled my collected hardback core books at people. Those plastic miniatures could make nasty caltrops.

I wish Lanza had a circle of friends, even if, as would likely be the case, he would be the lowest omega of his little geeky clique. I wish that he had passion, identity, heck, just a mere attachment to his Gundam models might have sufficed. I wish he had some obsessive outlet for his madness, be it Bronydom or Trekdom or endless trolling. I wish that years of fandom had made him less of a danger, diverted him from the combination of isolation and enablement which allowed him to become the pathetic monster that he was.

We're supposed to deny the affiliation of this latest young man to suffer from the mental illness first diagnosed by the Malayans, which is known as amok.

Adam Lanza was not a goth, or a metal head, or a gamer or a nerd or anything else.

But maybe he should have been.

Wow. That article author is a bit hypocritical. She's writing an article about media inaccurately linking a group (goths) with a disliked individual/action (shooter and mass murder).

Then she puts this gem in her article:
The fact that the most media outlets who have run with this are generally tabloids or right-wing is not a surprise. That's what they do best, inflame and demonize. And so they picked up on one comment from one rather dubious source. The Associated Press quotes Newtown-area parent Catherine Urso outside a vigil on the Friday night as saying her college-age son knew the killer. "He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths."

So... she publishes a media article linking a group (right-wing) with a disliked individual/action (publishing allegedly inaccurate information, inflaming, demonizing). Not to mention she performs no Fact Finding on whether they're right-wing media or that their information is inaccurate. In fact, the allegedly "inaccurate information" is from a cited AP source with witness testimony.

IRONIC EXPLOSION.

Look Goths, representatives from Gaming, Violent Movies, Metal Music, Rap Music, Pornography, and Nerf (who invited themselves to the meeting) all got together and voted and it was decided that it was your turn to take the blame. I know you're upset because you took the blame before, but that just means you have the most experience. A lot of thought was put into trying to shift some of the blame onto those Brony or Steampunk weirdos, but no one can take them seriously, so it's up to you for the next few weeks to distract the nation from even thinking that it might need to change the way it things about gun laws and the culture surrounding them. So just jump on that grenade and take one for the team, please? We promise that next time we'll pass the blame onto the Gays or people who look different.

Sad, the girl who wrote this thinks you can sum up a goth like that? Goths are more than just that, and some aren't that at all. Hell, I'm 39 years old, blond, not depressed at all, and am a successful professional. I'm a goth among other things. I don't play dress up (except for special occasions) and I listen to all kinds of music. I just happen to like that kind too. I moved past my angst-y pro-death poems when I was 15 years old and I'm not obsessed with things of that nature. One of my favorite goth bands plays very inspirational and uplifting music (not to be confused with religious). I guess everyone has to put a tidy label on everything to fit the stupid stereotype. Unfortunately, in the small goth community around here, there are the pathetic crybaby types. But I grew up in a time (and harken back to) when the music was phenomenal. Now if I enjoy that genre, I usually listen to the German stuff; it's just better.

Anyway, disorganized rant. Still no homicidal or suicidal urges.

In fact, over the course of my research, it turns out that 100% of spree shootings are caused by people who have guns. Truly a shocking revelation.

You're on to something.

Now that I think about it, 100% of people who have flown airplanes into World Trade Centers are Arabic. Lets lock up all the Arabs so this never happens again, because abandoning constitutional amendments based on isolated events and not on principles that made this country is a great idea.

Madame Ovary: Haircuts are horrible for kids with sensory disorders.

No shiat. It used to be that my son damn near had to be sedated in order to get him a haircut. We went the Flobie route simply because it was the fastest. Hated the vacuum cleaner, too. But he digs my wife, and she's a neat freak, so she got him to enjoy running the vacuum cleaner. He does that on his own now. And as a result, he's more sensitized to the sensory stuff, and goes to the barber with me.

Best thing you can do for autistic kids is as much as possible, treat them like regular kids.

At this point, I'm doubting that he had autism. Maybe he had a learning disorder and mom was nuts in trying to deal with school who would not adapt curriculum unless there was a diagnosis of something like ASD. A learning disorder would be socially stigmatizing, STUPID!

The fun thing about Goths is that even if some schmuck self-identifies as a Goth, that schmuck can be rejected by other Goth schmucks as not being a Real Goth, or one of those clueless "Neos" who aren't Real Goths either. For instance if a Goth kills anyone other than himself, he can be repudiated as never having been a Real Goth. If he kills himself, he might have been a Real Goth. There are serious rules for nonconformity, people!

Speaking as a post-Goth, (you're never really post-Goth). We don't shoot people. We shoot amazing photography--whimsically. We're artists who are not afraid of the dark. We're colorblind and don't want to look ridiculous. We're melancholy, with a bit of morbid, and occasionally dreary. We are many things, and we are not totally afraid of colours (we use british spellings for stylistic reasons), we just like to fit in (with our own). We are usually bad dancers (but sometimes amazing world class dancers), and we like music with strong bass and dark tones. We would like to regulate the wearing of black, but understand that this is not as important as other issues and don't push our agenda.
