I live about a mile and a half away from McLaren of Philadelphia, which is actually in West Chester. They typically have 4 or 5 of them in different colors. One of these days I'm going to get in an accident driving by from craning my neck. Actually saw an MP4-12C and a ZR-1 having some stoplight-to-stoplight fight not too far from there as well. Beautiful.

That statement in and of itself is true - simply owning something that others consider tasteful doesn't mean you have the same taste. I would generally define taste as a heightened interest, appreciation, and understanding of a category of goods that typically of higher than average price (food, wines, cars, cigars, etc.)

But keep in mind to even consider being a connoisseur of (and therefore having taste in) high end cars, you must first be able to purchase said cars. And Treynor is not simply buying these cars and showing them off. He's active in several forums, for starters.

So I'd say comparatively to 99.99999% of the rest of the US, Treynor has a taste for supercars.

True...he could have gone that route. Maybe he just doesn't have quite enough money for the gold plating, yet. Still, all I really see is that he can afford expensive cars. If they had all clocked in at under $60,000, would the same claims to taste still be being made?

Same truck, different target audiences. One is designed for the person who wants a light-duty truck with lots of chrome and leather as a daily driver but has no intention of using it as a work truck and the other is designed for the person who wants a light-duty truck with lots of matte black plastic as a daily driver but has no intention of using it as a work truck.

Since when is a Raptor a Super Car?

2012-12-18 02:02:58 PM

A Shambling Mound: Sin_City_Superhero: cgraves67: Nice, a Raptor. My boss just bought one. It's fun.

The Raptors are nice, but a girl I work with has an F-150 Platinum, and it's a bit nicer than a Raptor. At $56,000 it cost more than a Raptor, and is more refined. The Raptor is the better off-road vehicle, but the Platinum is a way nicer-driving truck, if you never intend on leaving the tarmac. The Raptor's interior isn't as nice, either.

Wait, what?

I'm always amazed at the endless bloat of the American vehicle. That monster is a light duty truck? Whatever happened to the Ranger or the non-gigantic Tacoma? People really need to get themselves sorted. There's something wrong with a guy who needs 500 hp to get to work or a woman who needs 4 tons of steel to haul one kid.

The problem with the Carrera is that it's not an easy car to drive. If you don't know how to drive it, you will quickly find the back-end coming around on you. The braking on them is phenominal, though, and if you DO know how to drive it, it'll propel you to speeds in excess of 200, and that ain't no joke.

I know that screen name. He's an awesome dude. Ive spoken with him numerous times in the past. He used to post on the LS1 forums regularly, and had a couple very nice vipers, including a centrifugal supercharged viper making north of 1200 HP. His wife had one too. Then we moved on to a 600+ HP 4 door mercedes before I lost track of the guy. He has a long standing history of having fun though. Apparently hes gone from the 1% to the .001%.

yeah, it is all incredibly moronic. What about those old Toyota trucks? They lasted forever, easy to care for, great mileage, and a modest amount of hauling space. Shovels, stuff from hardware store, lumber for a home project, nice, simple.

I love that these threads are always filled with at least seven people commenting on how jealous everyone is when people comment about rich people. While most of this thread is actually just a discussion of cars, it's just so nice to see people show up to tell others that expressing an opinion that people have too much money is only ever done out of jealousy and never out of a legitimate worry that as a smaller and small number of people suck up all the available wealth, we are worse off as a whole. It's always jealousy. Secretly I just really want three cars even though I A) don't drive B) Only have one ass C) would be terrified to drive it because someone without insurance would wreck it w/o fail.

Also, I like the dude's google + pic, it made me laugh.

And it makes perfect sense to own a truck if you're hauling stuff, and it makes perfect sense to own a bigger truck if you're hauling bigger stuff. It makes perfect sense to own a van if you have 9 kids to haul around. If you 3 or fewer kids and are doing a lot of hauling, you need a car. That is all.

It's basically a street legal pre-runner. It's also commonly used as a support truck in off road racing.

It's not really intended for commuting.

Great trucks those Toyotas, the answer is, they rusted away. My parents bought me a1984 Toyota pickup when I was in high school. it was a long bed and got great mileage, but a for cylinder diesel made zero to sixty something you didn't need a secondhand to measure. When I graduated high school and got a real job and bought my own car (1983 Mazda rx7, zoom, zoom!), they took it back and dad drove it until the late '90s. The motor ran as strong as the day it was new, but the body was more rust than paint. Great trucks, but not something that will survive the environment.

4WD pickup trucks don't do well in deep sand....no weight over the back axle. Best thing to do is deflate the tires to half pressure.

I etched a small buffalo on the rear glass of my1968 Porsche 912 Targa when restored and painted sixteen years ago, there is another etched under I-25 and Tramway when they re-did the bridge to be the nicest one in Albuquerque. There is another big one on a sixteen hundred pound rock above a fireplace in the east mountains. And another nice one on a beautiful San Juan river rock that now lives up in Denver. The best one I ever did though, is a faint white "Ghostly One" that was given to a fiery red-headed lover of French persuasion who proved a 1968 912 Targa is not too small for passions in the night! The 912 is now "Mostly Dead", it may not survive to drive again due to rust! If you see a Porsche Targa glass on-line for sale with a buffalo on it, then it didn't survive, although it does brings good memories and also has a few friends still around!

Our entire corporate fleet of 2013 escapes was just recalled for "oops, the 1.6l I4 might burst into flames if you try to merge onto the highway with it". The dealerships that took the 2012 fleet in trade about 3 days prior refused to release the old vehicles back, and fought tooth and nail not to provide courtesy/rental replacements for the time bombs.

Last year, 3-4 of the 2012 fleet escapes were DOA due to ignition modules not recognizing the chipped keys. One of our employees was stuck at the dealership for hours, because he had already signed release on the 2011, and could start the 2012 IN THE DEALERSHIP PARKING LOT without the alarm going off.

In 2010 we had 2 Taurus X (crossover) require flatbed transport within 3 months due to catastrophic transmission failure.

This is out of an annual pool of only 20-25 vehicles...

I'm sure my company buys way fewer vehicles than yours does. But, we've had great luck with them over the years.

I do notice they had a drop (due in part to the performance of the vehicles you mentioned) in 2011. Last new one I bought was in 2010, thank goodness.

Also, a few years back I was at an SCCA auto-x where one of the spectators showed up in one. As part of a charity fund raiser, she got one of the racers take her for a run around the cones in it. He spun twice. And he wasn't some hack - he's won multiple national championships in some decidedly difficult to drive cars.

timujin: I heard they involved bagels.

Of course bagels, what else? When you're in Joot's house you use the Joo's bread.

Whoah, now. I think he was making a "penis in the hole" joke, not a "rich jew" joke

I was, but I figured I'd let him roll with it.

Kraftwerk Orange: 006deluxe: The Muthaship: 006deluxe: Dunno. They were going the opposite direction. They didn't launch all that hard. Could only really tell they were gunning it from the noise behind me. If they made it through the light after the one that they were stopped at they had a good mile and a half before the next light. Would've been nice to catch them there. It was a good thing I didn't have to step out of the car right afterwards...the sound of the ZR-1 made my pants fit tight.

Sweet.

I still haven't seen a McLaren on the road. I have seen a couple ZR-1's.

I'm still waiting to see this piece of their inventory on the road.

Here's an older pic of my neighbor's Carrera GT:

Sorry, but no loaf of bread available to prove it's real.

Shame someone with enough money to own such a nice car can't park/drive worth shiat.

LOL, you're criticizing his parking? There's plenty of room on the other side... which is where he usually parks his Quattroporte.

Sin_City_Superhero: scottydoesntknow: How does the Platinum compare to the King Ranch? I love King Ranch trucks.

I'm not sure, since I've never driven a King Ranch, but I think that they are built on the Super Duty platform.

I've been shopping for a new truck lately, and so I can confirm that there is indeed a King Ranch option for the F150. There are a number of different such levels for people who want to commute in a truck.

Me, I need something to tow horse trailers and haul hay bales. Finding an F150 that's actually set up for this kind of task is surprisingly hard (extended cab, 8' bed, 4x4). Plenty of trucks available with crew cabs and half-beds, tho. Would you like power-extending cab steps with that? How about heated leather seats? Or maybe an under-the-front-bumper camera for seeing what you are about to run over?

The F150 has the capacity and tow capabilities I need - the F250 is much stiffer and more expensive - and so I'll probably just custom-order an F150.

I don't have any experience with the Silverado, but the Dodge 5.7 liter V8 is a pretty good truck for the money. It's a roller engine, too, so they have a bit more longevity than non-roller engines.

Sin_City_Superhero: OBBN: When I graduated high school and got a real job and bought my own car (1983 Mazda rx7, zoom, zoom!),

Damn I love those first-generation RX-7s. I had a 1979 when I was in high-school. Now I drive a 1985 RX-7 GSL. God bless the Wankle rotary...

I have a '85 GSL-SE in the garage now. Totally restored, but modified for autocross events. Racing seats, give point harnesses, roll bar. I have a nice body kit on it and did a hell of a job if I do say so myself on the restoration. I had a business seeking auto accessories online (closed it down a year ago as the economy tanked sales) selling Momo, Sparco and such. I used the car at the autocross events and car shows to advertise the business. I can't think if a car I have had more fun in! I can cover whole city blocks sideways when it's raining.
