Scott Brown will eventually have that seat. I know Deval is a Dem and all, but I'm pretty sure even he knows that.

He was only voting with his party like 55% of his time. I don't care what side you're on, if it's not obvious that he's not a part of the political status quo, you're missing something. And as far as I'm concerned, the status quo is exactly what we DON'T need right now.

Well, yes, that's why Benghazi was a thing. You'll notice that it hasn't really been mentioned much since Rice took her name out of the running for SecState.

Because that made Kerry the front-runner, and that's the opening the GOP wanted.

It's a bit disgusting how blatant they are being about it. They don't even have the decency to keep up the charade for a few weeks to make it look like it wasn't all about the Senate seat.

Doubtful. I don't think Brown is a bad guy at all, but I just don't see a guy from the opposing party getting the nod. Maybe if he hadn't literally just lost an election, but now...I don't see it.

He lost the Tea partiers and he also lost a lot of the independents with the toxic nature of the 2012 campaign.

Ahh, yes indeed they do. Funnily enough, they have that law because Ted Kennedy asked for it a week before his death.

Which is exactly why there's a very high chance that if he runs for Kerry's Senate seat, he'll be primaried by a True Believer.

Yes, they do. I forget who it was that filled Teddy's seat last time, but it does go that way.

You're assuming there are viable tea party members in this state that the tea party would even *want* to support. Most of them are either too liberal for them or just nutjobs like Bielat, the last guy to run against Barney, who resorted to getting in a shouting match with Barney's boyfriend (ISYN).

You don't have to be viable to win the primary. See Lugar/Mourdock.

The first time I learned anything about him is when I was 7 and I saw him riding in a tank on tv. This guy is running for president? If they had let prepubescent boys vote, he would've won by a landslide.

Yes, he was.

Up until it became apparent Warren would be a strong contender against him and he'd better appeal to the Massachusetts electorate.

In the 111th congress (which he was in from Feb 4-Jan 3), he voted party-line 81% of the time.

I was too--and I went to Northeastern where he teaches (or taught). I used to jog in the fens in the morning and saw him walking to work. He'd pick up every piece of garbage he saw on the ground and put it in the trash. It was weird to see a man who once ran for president picking up trash in the middle of a city park.

After the last election Brown is damaged goods.

Everyone likes a redemption story but he torched those bridges. The Dems already know what to use to make him lose.

If they try they're going to get nailed on it.

I would like to believe that Brown has no chance if he runs to take Kerry's seat, but who is there to run for the Democrats? This is why I was hoping Kerry would not get a Cabinet post and Brown would run for governor. He'd be fine as governor, just like Weld was...

Is the 55% party line voting record in the 112th mentioned above based on voted he actually cast or total number of times the Senate voted? I imagine that he was present for fewer votes while campaigning...

The state legislature is, combined, 164 Democrats, 36 Republicans. The six statewide elected executive offices are exclusively Democrats. The Democrats will have no shortage of candidates.

This is true. Candidates with the potential to beat Brown? Name one. I live in Mass, voted for Coakely( never again for anything, it was tough then). I just don't see a candidate who could marshall the enthusiasm Warren did, or even close.

By all accounts, Coakley was an awful candidate; this is a mistake I don't think the Democrats will make again. I think that when the eventual Democratic nominee has Elizabeth Warren, John Kerry, and Barack Obama campaigning on their behalf, they won't have to worry much about the enthusiasm gap.

I know what_now could show up touting Capuano... The three you mentioned plus a holographic Teddy would not give me any enthusiasm for any of the likely candidates
Look back at how Patrick was able to get his first run, look at how Warren had no real challengers.

Michael Dukakis - US Army (1955-1957), Tank Crew Member (Korea)

One of the biggest mistakes in US Political History! No, not posing for the picture, but the failure to run some ads putting the photo in context and touch on his service as a GI to his country as a member of a tank crew. Instead, they chose to run away from the photo and treat it as a gaffe (allowing it to become a punch line).

I wonder how many people know that Dukakis was invited and allowed to pilot that tank due to his previous service in the Army in that specific capacity?

That's an understatement. The woman ran like she didn't think she had to do anything to win. Drew a lot of flak from the state party for being an enormous no-show.

So, as an independent Massachusetts voter whom, I assume, will study all the issues thoroughly before picking your candidate, what kind of vehicle will a candidate have to drive to win your vote?
