Why would anyone want to survive the end of the world? I don't want to live the rest of my life watching my loved ones die and/or struggle to survive. I also don't want to isolate myself from humanity in some bunker/prison/concrete coffin. I don't understand the why people obsess over the end and welcome it. Preppers and predictors all seems hell-bent on trying to be "right" and all fantasize over the delusional power they think they will acquire after "the end" in being able to say, "I told you so."

I'm ok with this. The Mayan "doomsday prophecy" inferred from the end of their calendar is so ridiculous that it's not even worth refuting, and yet the press have been reporting it like it's an actual prediction worthy of being taken seriously by fringe groups and wackaloons for the last two years. They should all be shot with a ball of their own shiat.

Watching too much Mad Max / Road Warrior / Beyond Thunderdome as a kid. Also, it'll be the closest well get to fictional fantasy in a completely different planet.

Yes I agree with all of that. In a fantasy setting it's great fun and you can't help but insert yourself into those worlds... But in real life it would be pretty much the most depressing, soul wretching, and death filled human tradedy ever. To ever wish that upon us becuase it's "just a damn cool aesthetic" makes one quiet mentally ill.

Yay, now you're a much more interesting troll than Boarch.

I never said you were mentally ill, nor did I say you wished for the end. I said wishing for the end because it looks cool makes "one" mentally ill.
Now explain the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy to me? So because everyone wants a flying car (which not everyone does) and if it hasn't happened in "60-years" then it somehow falls outside the realm of the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy? So I guess something has to happen within a certain short sighted time frame for it to be relevant to you? How quaint of you. Apparently only you and goldfish have such shortsighted visions.

Perhaps it won't be. If you're one of those lucky few to live on some tiny island somewhere surrounded by resources you may be ok and live happily ever after. And yes, some people hate people and I would argue at the top of that list are people that prep for the end. Those people have no faith in themselves or in humanity because they are convinced the end is near. They clearly hate people. So those are the last people I want to be around if the end comes.

Yes, I said all of those things. But here's where you're wrong. I CAN have my cake and eat it too.

People who wish for the end of the world are mentally ill. My troll-dar went off because you suggested that perhaps some people who wish for the end aren't mentally ill and they perhaps just enjoy related video games and/or movies (NON-FICTION) and think it could be cool to live in such a world (FICTION). Those that cannot tell the difference between the two don't have a sense of reality.

Trying to dismiss self-fulfilling prophecy in reference to the end of the world by suggesting that people want a flying car and that we don't have one after 60 years is a false comparison...

The idea of a self-fulfilling prophecy has many elements. The idea of a flying car rests on the idea of the technologies that must be developed as well as the human choice to pursue them. There is a sequential order to it, one that takes time.
When it comes to the end of the world people have some choice. You chose to be a part of society, you chose to follows laws, and you choose to love or hate your fellow man. There isn't a sequential order here at least not in the same respect as there is in the development of new technologies. In the case of the fabric of society it can all change very quickly if enough people desire it.

So you really think the apocalypse will come because some "self fulfilling prophecy"?

Wow, you really ARE mentally ill. Do you realize this is not the first time we've had apocalypse scare? Try to read what happened in 999, or in 1999, or dozen of different dates.

It's similar to the WW3 scare. People have been freaking out about it because after WWI and WWII then WWIII must come next, right? Oh wait, no, that's not how it works.

No, I think the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy is merely a factor and not even necessarily the primary factor. How big a factor it plays depends on the amount of people that believe it. There are other factors that would lead to the end of the world - I don't think the world will end just because people say it will. It takes a push first... That push could be economic crash, war, or natural disaster. My point is in all of those things (which are outside the self-fulfilling prophecy in this case) all interact with how we choose to deal with those issues. If we keep focusing on the end of the world then it will contribute to our downfall when a sufficient push takes place. End of the world = Push X Hype

The WW3 example is perfect... People have been talking about that for years. Don't you think that the next time there is a war (for whatever reason) that perhaps all this talk about WW3 over all these years and people "freaking" out may blow a possible "major war" out of proportion to a "world war" just based on hype? The more hype the more likely it will be to get blown out of proportion. That is how self-fulfilling prophecy plays its role.

But we've had many wars since WWII and none has escalated into WWIII, especially not the ones the most publicized about it, like Iraq 1 and 2.

If tomorrow WWIII explodes, you can't say it's due to "self fulfilling prophecy" because that's tantamount to being the guy who "predicts" Home Runs at baseball games. "You'll see, this time he'll hit it" *player strucks out for the next 14 plate appearances* "You'll see, this time is it." *player hits HR* "TOLD YOU SO!!"

No, that's not how it works. If WWIII breaks out, it'll break out because it'll breakout, not because any bullshiat self fulfilling prophecy. Now go get your head checked.

Ha. I'm not saying the next war will be WW3, I can't predict that. Take the cold war for example. The world arguably ended in nuclear holocaust several times and that entire war was hype.

In the baseball analogy I would be saying that a batter whom believes he's able to hit a homerun will likely hit a homerun more so than a batter whom doesn't. In either case I wouldn't go as far as to predict that the next time either one are up at bat that the one whom believes he will hit a home run will actually hit one. I'm mealy saying that his confidence is a factor and the chances are higher than he will hit one.

/You are getting all riled up there! Not once have I personally insulted you (perhaps I have your ideas) but you've personally insulted me many times... I find that interesting.
