from the looks of her, that's probably how she got her job in the first place.

He did, however, defend her actions on press-freedom grounds. Shubailat angled for interviews Friday via Twitter during the early, chaotic hours after the shooting - when many parents with children at the school didn't know whether their sons and daughters were alive.

"Do you want us to wait until the police and the government releases that information?" Schneider asked. "I can't believe that's the kind of country you want to live in."

Wow, way to go off the deep end douchebag. No we're not asking for a police state where the media has to go through gov't channels to actually print anything. We're asking you to act like a decent human being and let people figure out WTF is actually going on before attempting to book interviews.

2012-12-18 10:22:23 AM
Wow, I thought this had to be hyperbole. I didn't actually expect her to be so blatant with it, nor to double down like she did. Impressive level of disconnect from her job and her humanity.

Thank goodness we have that bastion of media ethics Daily Make Shiat Up to call her out on this. At least some people still have standards.

Actually I would like to live in the sort of world where friends and families of victims are notified of their loss by the guys on the ground first and not hounded for a story by ghouls like you.

Eat a dick indeed.

Jesus the whole "LET'S INTERVIEW THE TRAUMATIZED GRADE SCHOOLERS" thing is making me really, really ill. What a bunch of ghouls.

I mean, F*CK! They're farking kids! What the hell useful information do you think you're going to get out of them? That they are, and were, scared? Were confused? No, it's just so you can milk emotion.

If it bleeds it leads. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

When they run out of details to report, they just show pictures of the victims with sad music (for the 1000th time) and start interviewing the local news photographer.

No, people wanted to know if kids got out safely, if there was still a second gunman on the loose etc. Info the police have provided without the need for reporters.

Not "So your cousin was shot point blank several times, how do you feel?"

You may think you're somehow exceptional, but really you're not. Your mere presence here shows that. This is a website where the foibles and follies of humanity load up the page by the minute. I doubt you're here to share cooking recipes.

If any interested farkers would care to read a balanced and well written article (from a Canadian point of view - CBC) here's an article by Neil MacDonald.
Just for interest sake, Neil MacDonald is the brother of comedian Norm MacDonald (Saturday Night Live) and is an excellent reporter.

I'm damn disappointed in the fark modmin who has a personal vendetta against me. I've posted articles over the past month and not one green light. I do take it personally, and I take it as an insult to farkers who have been robbed of the chance of reading a great article like the one I've posted.

Luck everyone. My deepest condolences to those who've been affected by this tragedy.

Actually, people want all of it. There are ways to do the story delicately, and for the most part, reporters act respectfully. That usually goes ignored; no big surprise when dealing with the myopic view of Crowd-Rage. Cue the ancedotal evidence!

Here in Atlanta the media has a hard on for apartment fires. Then they go hunt down the people that didn't pay the $8/month for renter's insurance who lost the couch and bedroom set they have 80 payments left on from Rooms to Go.

Spare me the hand-wringing. If your buddy there were such a great reporter, he would have mentioned the goddamned shooting that just happened in that goddamned country. With a semi-automatic CZ-858 rifle, no less. Jesus Christ, man.

this went exactly how it had to.

people demand survivor testimony.
some producers with shiat jobs were therefore required to ask.
the blogs had to show how they are above the traditional media so they called said producers on it.
the producers' boss had to come up with some type of justification but couldn't say *but ratings* so came up with *so you are saying you would really prefer Goebbels?*
it really couldn't have gone any other way.

Call me crazy but I don't think it was that bad. She identified herself in the tweet and it's her job to get the news. Like it or not, we all want to know more about tragedies and eat up the kind of interview she wanted. Blame society for creating the demand, if you want to blame someone.

Her "police state" quote is obviously stupid but I imagine at that point she was a little stressed by the (over-) reaction to the tweet.

I also find it kinda amusing that this person is now much more in the media spotlight than if the tweet had been simply ignored.

Jument: Blame society for creating the demand, if you want to blame someone.

I don't really think it's society, it's more the competitiveness of the news agencies. Back in the day you relied on (usually) one newspaper for your daily news and one or two news stations for nightly news, so there was no true rush to be the first to get facts out. Nowadays, every news agency is competing with every other news agency thanks to the internet.

Society didn't make her ask for an interview. It was the desire to scream "I GOT THE FIRST INTERVIEWS" for all the internet to see.

I'm a cynic myself, but think about it.
you were in the midst of contemplating the worst tragedy in America since 911, just a few days old, and the role of media in our rationalization of it and suddenly what pops into your head is fox news and hope that they hack some the victims,

I'd betcha anything her boss expects her to use every means available to dig for those interviews, and that's why the boss was hyper defensive and throwing out the police state hyperbole and blaming the blogs for the vitriol coming from the public. if I as her boss I'd make her do it. how about that.

She asked for an interview. That's not harrassment.
One of the goddamn teachers in the school that day was interviewed by CNN barely 5 hours later, and every network and every viewer fully enjoyed listening to her riveting, tearful account.

I don't limit the poor scruples of the media to Fox News and other NewsCorp entities. In fact I have very low expectations for CNN since Jeff "be a leader in non-fiction programming" Zucker took over. The state of the media today is about selling your eyeballs to advertisers and the best way to do that is to get the story first instead of right.

However, I should judo-flip my cynicism in this case and realize that idiot media -is- getting its just desserts. And I will walk back my previous statement and admit it was an assholish statement that wasn't really thought through.
