The only thing lamer than the game was this story.
I've watched Jon "Chucky" Gruden long enough to know that if he isn't currently making that face, he just finished making it and is just about to.

can't stand Gruden..never could, and I'm a Raiders fan. Think he sucks as a coach...he won the SB with Tony Dungy's team...

i'd like to see him return to coaching so that he would be outed as a sucky coach.

he's probably just bummed because he regrets not taking the Tennessee Vols offer

No he was just clenching because he thought he saw Sanchez sliding toward his butt.

au contraire, my friend.....i've been a diehard Raiders fan since 1970. I vividly recall the miracle season of George Blanda. I've corresponded with many in the Raiders front office, including the old Raider greats from the 60's and 70's. That said.....

I had very, very high hopes for Gruden when he joined the Raiders...they had a good, solid nucleus, and I thought that Gruden would be the one to take them to another championship.

But, literally from day one he butted heads with al davis...but, then again, who hasn't?

When the raiders had the year they had in 2002, it was like several things came together at once....very few injuries, Gannon had a career year, good offensive play-calling....but, I had the feeling that they weren't a superbowl winner.

Gruden beat them, sans Barrett Robins, and knowing the Raiders offensive line play calls...and beat them soundly. But, he beat them with Tony Dungy's team.

Remember the years after the Bucs super bowl win? yeah, not so good.....

i've just never had the feeling that Jon Gruden was a great coach...I followed him before the Raiders, and after the Raiders.....take out Tony Dungy's team, and the "chucky" faces, and he'd be just another seldom remembered failure.

And, I've always thought that's why he'll never coach again.....he caught lightning in a bottle. Tough to do that twice.

Wait, wait.

He was the Raiders coach for what, 3 or 4 years, and left. That team he made went to the Super Bowl the next year. Wouldn't that mean that Callahan took GRUDEN'S team to the Super Bowl, if Gruden went to Tampa and took THAT team to the big dance but it was Dungy's?

You're using the example of Gruden taking Dungy's team to the Super Bowl, where they met the team Gruden built and just left that prior year...as proof Gruden sucks?

Cause he had TWO teams in the Super Bowl?

no, no no......i'm just saying this.....i would like Gruden to take a team that hasn't been built yet....like maybe this years Arizona Cardinals. Take a team like that to the playoffs and win a superbowl. A lot of the pieces to the Raiders 2002 superbowl team were there when Gruden got there.

I could be totally wrong. Might be. Maybe Gruden is a great coach. I just don't think we'll ever know unless he gets back into coaching.

But....but....wasn't Oakland like 19-30 for the three years BEFORE Gruden?

Wouldn't that qualify as 'a team that hadn't been built yet'? That he made, left, and it went to the Superb Owl with the mighty Bill Callahan at the helm?

He had the 4th highest winning % of all Raiders coaches, and would have gone deeper into the playoffs in '01 if not for the Tuck Rule game. His record in Tampa is 57-55 (not great, but still over .500), where he won the division three times in 7 years with absolute crap for offensive talent. In his 11 seasons as head coach, he has had 3 losing seasons.

If you want to argue "Gruden wouldn't have won the Superbowl if Callahan wasn't a no-talent hack and Robbins wasn't off his meds" then we'd have something to discuss, but you can't dismiss Gruden taking the Bucs to the Superbowl as nothing more than 'riding Dungys's team' with one hand while dismissing the Raiders making the Superbowl with the other. Regardless of the outcome of that game, a team Gruden builds is in it and a team he coaches is in it. He's a fine coach and the best the Raiders have had since Flores. Raider fans wanting him back recognize that he was pretty good and have had to look at a laundry list of shiat since then:Callahan, Turner, Shell, Kiffin, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson, Allen

Turner and Hue make good play-callers and should have success elsewhere as OCs. The rest should be coaching peewee.

I just want to see Gruden coaching again so we can get a shot of him in the draft war room covering every surface in Gruden Juice as he faps about every player on the list until he's spent. THIS 5TH ROUND LONG-SNAPPER PROSPECT IS A REAL GRINDER! HE'S THE BEST IN THE PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE AT LONG SNAPPING!

You know how I know you aren't a Bucs fan? HE ASSEMBLED THAT ABSOLUTE CRAP FOR OFFENSIVE TALENT. Yeah, the "offensive genius" that could never seem to have an offense ranked in the top ten, in spite of the many, many hours (he told us every chance he could) that he worked. He put that crap together. The only reason that team won any games is due to Monte Kiffin and the defense. Gene farking Chizik thinks that Jon Gruden walked into a good situation.

I turned if off in the third quarter when Gruden opined that the series Ryan brought Tebow in "threw off" Sanchez's rythym.

So he didn't assemble the defense that won the Superbowl, but he assembled the crap offense that won the Superbowl? Got it. You can only change so much of a team at a time, you know. Existing players with contracts, salary cap, draft picks, ownership influences, etc.

Also hindering Gruden: the trade bringing him to Tampa cost two 1st round picks (2002, 2003) and two 2nd round picks (2002, 2004). The Gruden trade did exactly what they wanted for Tampa: win a Superbowl immediately and damn the future.

Huh? He assembled neither. He lucked into a Super Bowl. The offense that year was 24th in YPG. This was enough to win the Super Bowl that year. Here's where Tampa Bay's offenses ranked (YPG/scoring), with the genius of Jon Gruden:

2002 - 24/18
2003 - 10/18 (YAY!)
2004 - 22/23
2005 - 23/20
2006 - 29/31
2007 - 18/18
2008 - 14/19

Truly a revolutionary offensive playcaller.

And about draft picks, Gruden hates young offensive players anyway. It's not like he would have drafted anyone anyway. Instead, we got a steady diet of washed-up veterans like Charlie Garner, Jeff Garcia, et. al.

2012-12-18 05:05:06 PM
And again, just for emphasis:

Jon Gruden's BEST season as the Buc's playcaller had them finish 18th in Scoring Offense.

The best part of the 1970 season was when Buck Buchanan of the Chiefs hoisted Blanda over his head and body slammed him to the turf. I was stunned that Blanda actuially got up. One tough hombre for sure.

Bucs fan here. I know we are rare ...

Gruden brought in a new QB new RB and two new WRs and 2 new O linemen the year the Bucs won the SB.

Dungys Defense won a SB with Grudens knowledge of the Raider play book and audible calls that they didn't bother to change.

That being said Gruden talks a good game on air but its all bluster. He can't draft or evaluate talent for shiat. Instead of Aaron Rogers and Adrian Peterson in Tampa Bay we got Gaines Adams(RIP) and Cadillac Williams. He couldn't get along with the GM who helped build the winning team in Tampa (Rich McKay) and got him fired to bring in his own GM stooge in Bruce Allen. Allen got us out of cap trouble the Glazers closed the wallet and Gruden started losing because the weak prospects he selected. Gruden is not a coach he is a character and he does the chucky face because it keeps the brand going.

2012-12-18 06:05:01 PM
The Raiders were shiat before Gruden got there, and he turned them into a very good team, but Gruden sucks. The Bucs were good before Gruden got there, and he turned them into a SB winner, but Gruden sucks.

The Raiders were shiat after Gruden left, but Gruden sucks. The Bucs have been complete shiat since Gruden left, but Gruden sucks.

Man, I guess Gruden really sucks!

That game was AWESOME!

Gruden sucks as a commentator, he sounds lazy, and just says: "That guy" a lot. And apparently, every starter in the NFL is a hall of famer and MVP and a Pro Bowler.
