True story: There's an echidna in the Toledo zoo. I was watching him waddle around his pen, and while I was there, everyone who saw him thought he was a porcupine. "Ooh kids, look at the porcupine!"

They hatched, technically, which is a pretty rare thing among mammals.

Go monotremes!

Hatched but raised in mama's pouch. Related to platypus?

Cute in their own little way, they do look a tad bit alien though. Is Puggle the technical term for a baby echidna? Or is that a regional thing.

I love how Australia breeds its own Pokemon.

They spent two months in their mothers' pouches before being placed in the nursery burrows.

This is great news. I know they've been waiting a long time for echidna transplant.

Luck of the genetic lottery. It is possible that echidnas naturally have more females than males, but i don't have any information on that.

lemurs: They hatched, technically, which is a pretty rare thing among mammals.

By pretty rare, you mean virtually unheard of, only occurring in 5 species, 4 of which are echidnas and the last is the every crazy platypus. Out of over 5700 known species of mammals.

Yes, they represent the monotremes.

I believe it is the proper term for a baby echidna or platypus.

The oldest existing mammals, I believe. At least, that what I was told when I was in Perth.

Booooo!!!! In my 5 months in Perth, I made a lot of puns that made Australians sick, but never stooped that low...

I don't know about saying "oldest existing mammal" as it implies a lot of things and creates questions as to exactly when the individual species evolved. But monotremes are easily the oldest of the three extant mammal branches (followed by marsupials and placental mammals). Which is easy to guess by them possessing a number of characteristics long since lost by the other groups (notably laying eggs and not having nipples).
