It's a one-year contract, so who cares? The absolute worst-case scenario is that he sucks...and then he's gone next year. And Drew's probably worth that much if he stays healthy. Big if, of course.

Not like the Sox will do much next year anyways.

His contract is one the Red Sox can easily eat, given their resources, true. And he was (I believe) the only credible shortstop on the free agent market.

The only way he's worth $9.5 million though is if he's 2010 Stephen Drew, which is pretty unlikely. That's also a hell of a lot to put up for a shortstop that posted a -5.2 UZR last season.

Last night on MLB Network Kevin Millar was talking about how the BoSox will be better than the Rays and the Blue Jays next year. I think he said something about them having a good rotation, but I was laughing pretty hard so I could be wrong.

9.5 million is basically the going rate for an average shortstop. Since Drew has been average or better every year except 2012 & 2007, I'm not seeing the issue.

Of course, JD Drew wasn't really overpaid either. The first four 4 years lined up pretty well with his contract. Only the 5th was bad.

But otherwise, great headline subby.

Could've been a contact high off of whatever Millar was drinking this time.

..in the meantime, looks like Swisher turned down the 50/4 the Indians offered him.
Personally I think he's delusional.

..reported now that the Rangers are in talks with both Pierzynski and Swisher
