Shiat's gettin' done. Soon everyone will be unhappy. Then we'll know it's a reasonable compromise.

Pretty much. You don't jack up taxes and cut spending to the tune of a TRILLION DOLLARS A YEAR without everyone getting impacted.

Of course, *my* sacred cows / special programs are a net benefit to the nation, and should not be touched. I can't show it with math, but I just know deep in my heart that if you doubled funding unemployment would fall to 1% and there would be world peace

No cost of living increases for SS?  That's some short thinking right there.

James!: No cost of living increases for SS?  That's some short thinking right there.

My grandmother was REALLY mad when P. Omaba "did" this back in 09. Of course what had actually happened was a period of negative inflation, and they ended up giving an SS cost of living increase anyway in the end.

I'm mildly surprised Boehner is negotiating in seemingly good faith. I'll be very surprised if he'll be able to convince his Tea Party-addled colleagues in the House to do anything.

There's the rub. He's trying to run a coalition government and the minority party in the coalition has repeatedly farked him in the past. I'm very interested to see if he can finally get them in line or if the Republican party will die trying.

Brendan Buck, a spokesman, said that ''a proposal that includes $1.3 trillion in revenue for only $930 billion in spending cuts cannot be considered balanced.

Shiats all koyaanisqatsi right now, as it is.

This "imbalance" is in the right direction but it will scarcely make a dent in the burgeoning wealth inequality.

Who knows. Maybe tits will break the republicans back on voting in lock step. I could see the establishment reps voting on a compromise with the dems and getting it passed. At least it would enrage the tea badgers and that would be fun to watch.

He doesn't need the Tea Party for this. They'll all vote no. There are enough non-Tea Part Republican's, when combined with the Democrats, to get this passed no problem. They've probably already worked out exactly who the sacrificial lambs will be. It will pass with 100% of Democrats voting in favor, and just enough Republican's to get it passed.

Isn't this story already not current? Apparently Boehner rejected this and said since Obama hasn't made a serious offer in his opinion he'll just pass a bill to keep everyone making less than $1,000,000 a year at the same marginal income tax rate, and then worry about the fiscal cliff/debt ceiling otherwise as a seperate issue. Reid is saying it's a no-go.

Daily Kos is about ready to impeach Obama for the SS change and for making Reid look bad....without even knowing if it's A) true and B) what was obtained in return.

And I'm not talking about some random article on the right of the page that anyone can write...it's on the main page and from one of their regular writers.

I actually think Obama's deal splits the baby rather reasonably. Republicans don't have to worry about any cuts to Defense, keep Obama from getting a payroll tax cut extension, got what they wanted on Social Security but not Medicare, and Obama has effectively halved the number of households who will see a tax increase (top 4% to top 2% now), all while cutting the budget significantly. In return they have to accept some fiscal stimulus and accept the taxes on the top 2% and leave Medicare untouched.

Imagine if President Romney and John Boehner were compromising right now. Not a single person in this country would be paying taxes. Job creators would be receiving a dollar for every dollar of wealth they create. The size of the economy would be doubling every thirty minutes. But nope, we need hope and change. Lol. This sounds amazing! How could it be?

Job creators would be receiving a dollar for every dollar of wealth they create.

Brilliant! Of course we would not tax the job creators, they create the jobs! And they get a dollar for every dollar of wealth... ho ho, we don't pay the peons! Then they don't have to pay taxes either! Amazing!

The size of the economy would be doubling every thirty minutes. But nope, we need hope and change. Lol. Good work ruining human history, liberals.

A reasonable compromise is a larger tax increase than Obama campaigned on?

Look, I understand the anger, but the fact is that people saying we should dive over the fiscal cliff are about as bad as Republican's willing to shut the government down in the 90's*. You want to cut your nose to spite your face, but the fact is that if Obama could get this passed (and that's a big if) it will back-load the austerity and give some more stimulus up front, which could help us out much more in the long run. If we actually started to see genuine Keynesian policy for once (applying breaks when the economy starts expanding significantly) there might be some benefit to all this yet.

* - Still not as terrible as trying to default on the debt ceiling, the single stupidest political suicide bomb I know of.

What Obama should have done is when Boehner was saying he wants to cap deductions Obama should have said "Ok lets cap capital gains at 250k anything above that you pay as normal income" and watch Boehner and the other Republicans piss their pants. He could have totally out maneuvered them on it.

Perhaps you mistook my post for sarcasm. Your entry brilliantly highlighted the manner in which we may most effectively restore the failed 0bama economy - and save every man, woman, and child from the brute punishment of taxation at the same time. Well done, sir!
