(Mother Nature Network)   Did you ever notice that most doomsday predictors don't have a very good accuracy rate?   ( divider line

December 21?? This year? That's cutting it a little close, isn't it? I mean, just from a sales point of view, the book just came out, right? So you're not even looking at the paperback release for maybe a year. And it's going to be at least another year after that if the thing has movie-of-the-week or mini-series potential.

My favorite 'doomsday' prediction - more of a curse really - involves the desecration of 'Tamerlane' / Timur's Tomb in Samarkand.

(quick & dirty copy/paste from the wiki):

'Timur's body was exhumed from his tomb in 1941 by the Soviet anthropologist Mikhail M. Gerasimov.'

'It is alleged that Timur's tomb was inscribed with the words, "When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble." It is also said that when Gerasimov exhumed the body, an additional inscription inside the casket was found reading, "Who ever opens my tomb, shall unleash an invader more terrible than I."[88] In any case, two days after Gerasimov had begun the exhumation, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, its invasion of the U.S.S.R.[89] Timur was re-buried with full Islamic ritual in November 1942 just before the Soviet victory at the Battle of Stalingrad.[90]'

Someday one of them will be right and we'll never hear the end of it.

I was listening to NPR last night and an Archeology Professor with a specialization in Mayan history was the guest and while he did a thorough debunking (and mocking) of the whole doomsday thing, audio stream here, and at the end, he noted that the "funniest" thing about it is that the one image that all the doomsayers use is that picture of a calendar stone.

But the Maya never made calendar stones. That stone is Aztec.

The FSM is coming. We shall all be smothered in His Noodly Munificence.

I suddenly have a idea for a porn movie...

I was just talking with someone who says they believe in the Mayan apocalypse, but wanted to invite me to their New Years party.

Don't panic. Every time the world has ended, someone has rebuilt it exactly the same way that it was before, and we are all none the wiser.

Well, to be fair even if they are right, the known failure rate is still going to be 100%.
