The "serious business" board gamers I knew hated that "uncontrolled variable" aspect, and would have incredible meltdowns when they lost because of it. Seriously, some of those guys hated when someone "lesser" beat them due to dumb luck or a "first time playing, let me try this" strategy. They also had huge control issues, but that's neither here nor there.

My point, if you can call it that, is that when you're dropping everything down to the LCD, you might as well just put the cards away and have a conversation. I don't understand the cheap kicks of saying 'shiat' and 'fark' once you've moved out of the house, and that's really the only difference between this game and apples to apples.

I guess I just have that stuck in my head. I dunno. I have plenty of fun when I play other games, I don't take myself too seriously, I'm not really a rules lawyer, I just have that thought stuck in my head that there's a realm of games that cater to the half-wits and the half-assed, and I hate that entire category of games.

If there's no thinking involved, and there's no social aspect to manipulate, It's a waste of time. Serious has nothing to do with it.

Agreed. But that's how they have their fun, and as long as it's not disrupting others' fun, then fine. It's when they belittle others because they're noobs, or misrepresent rules to noobs to gain unfair advantage, or get the police called because of a D&D rules nazi argument, that it goes from fun to jerkdom.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I want to. I attended Board Game Geek in November, but I couldn't find it in the game library. I'm sure it was there but checked out.

Well, that's the thing. Thinking is work. It can be fun too, but sometimes, you just want light entertainment and not to have to strategize and plot. In those cases, a game like Cards Against Humanity works. Just like sometimes you're in the mood for a heavy film, something like Ingmar Bergman or the like, and sometimes you just want to watch Jackie Chan kick some ass. Or sometimes you're in the mood for Civilization, and sometimes you'd rather fire up Super Mario Bros. There's room for all of the above, and choosing one over the other doesn't make you any less intelligent.

And saying "there's no social aspect to manipulate" is a mistake. Cards Against Humanity is all about the social aspect.

Just make sure you set aside a decently hefty block of time for it, and hopefully your playing with others who know how to play.

Protip: Unless your close to the limit on open gates, do not enter a gate unless you have the clue tokens to seal it, especially for the most active gate locations. There are 67 Mythos cards, and pretty much all of them open gates in the core game. Out of all the unstable locations, 4 locations on the board account for 40 of the 67 mythos cards.

If you leave the gate open until you can seal it, you get more monster surges, but the doom track stays managable. If you close those gates, they tend to just re-open again and the doom track runs away on you.

Also take a close look at the Ancient One you'll be facing. For some of them, it's a better goal to build up your combat abilities and try to take it out rather than sealing/closing gates, especially if you're playing with some of the alternate rules.

There is a time and place for Dominion, Arkham Horror, 7 Wonders and Settlers of Catan. There is also a time and place for Apples-to-Apples and Cards Against Humanity. They are different times and different places. Apples to Apples and Cards against Humanity are party games that you play with a ton of people in a party like atmosphere. It's pretty easy to add or remove people throughout the game, you can play with a ton of people, the rules are extremely simple and in the end it doesn't really matter who wins.

Dominion Arkham Horror, 7 Wonders, Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, Shadows Over Camelot, Ticket to Ride and so forth are great games but require a different environment to play them in. Many of them have more complicated rule sets that take longer to explain, They tend to be geared more towards 3-5 players, if someone wants to leave or join midgame you are kind of screwed and so forth.

If I am having people over for a board game day, or I have a small group of friends over we will play one of the more involved board games. If I have 10 or more people over a ton of them are drunk and we want something to do then we will play apples to apples or cards against humanity.

People trying to claim that the one type of game is better then other other are either missing the point or trolling. Cards against humanity is dumb if you only have 2 sober people just like arkham horror is dumb if you have 12 shiatfaced people.

I keep my copy of CoH in my car at all times because it is the perfect game to just pull out at a moment's notice. It takes absolutely no prep, the rules are simple, number of players allowed is incredibly huge, and it always leads to a lot of laughter. Sure, I love playing Pandemic, Settlers, Ticket to Ride, Empire Builder, and Arkham Horror. But it isn't always the time or the place to bust out Twilight Imperium (set the time and the place and I'll be there with my copy). CoH is just relaxing fun that can be played anywhere from hotel rooms, basements, backyard barbecues, bars, wherever. Especially if you're just hanging out, killing time. Though I don't recommend playing it in the car as it is guaranteed to lead to distracted driving even if the driver is actually playing the game.

If you believe there is no social aspect to manipulate in CAH, you're doing it wrong. That's what the whole game is, really--does the judge have an offbeat sense of humor, are they punny, are they gross-out fans, whatever.

My favorite game of the last two years was Catacombs. It's D&D with flicking discs. Dexterity dungeon crawl. One person plays the evil Overseer and controls the monsters and up to 4 others play the heroes.

Incredible game if you have the right person playing the Overseer as he basically plays the DM. Like any other DM, if he's a bad DM, he'll ruin the experience by taking all his monsters and attack a single character until they die and then pick off the rest. With a great Overseer, it's a great time for everyone and the DM will modify the dungeon as they see fit to adjust for the skill of the players. When I do it, I'll add or remove rooms to try and get everyone to the final chamber alive for the final fight.
