1. It's not fair to make non-Christian kids and their parents have to choose between either singing Christian songs or being excluded from an activity the rest of their classmates are participating in.
2. There are a bajillion secular Christmas songs that could have been chosen with no undie-bunching on anyone's part.
3. Calling it bullying makes you sound like a dickwad and detracts from your legitimate arguments.

They said they have no problem with Frosty the Snowman or Santa Claus - but the real reason for the Christmas season has no place in school concerts, they argued.

The kids are gonna perform Saturnalia carols?

It's impossible to use religious songs for bullying or intimidation. It wasn't meant that way at all when Fox used "Awesome God" as their piece music when preparing to bring an atheist into a debate.

Florey v. Sioux Falls School District (8th Cir. 1980) - Study and performance of religious songs is perfectly acceptable if the purpose is "advancement of the students' knowledge of society's cultural and religious heritage, as well as the provision of an opportunity for students to perform a full range of music, poetry and drama that is likely to be of interest to the students and their audience."

Bauchman v. West High School (10th Cir. 1997) - "The Constitution does not require that the purpose of government-sanctioned activity be unrelated to religion."

Doe v. Duncanville Independent School District (5th Cir 1995) - "A position of neutrality towards religion must allow choir directors to recognize the fact that most choral music is religious. Limiting the number of times a religious piece of music can be sung is tantamount to censorship and does not send students a message of neutrality. . . . Such animosity towards religion is not required or condoned by the Constitution."

If you believe that a virgin woman gave birth to a man-god who can walk on water, change water into wine, raise people from the dead, and come back from the dead himself, its not much of a stretch to believe in a magical snowman who comes to life.

You want to celebrate Christmas? CHRISTmas? You might just have to accept that Christian mythology is kinda sorta really important to some people. If you can't pull the stick out of your ass and find something fun in singing about baby Jesus at Christmas, you really are a jerk. I'm not Christian. I've never been Christian. But you know what? Some of the better songs to sing mention Christ by name, like The Little Drummer Boy, and there's a shiat ton of people who I like who wanna sing them. I will not shiat on their parade just because I'm not the same faith.

There's so many reasons Christmas is not an exclusively Christian holiday, too. We can date it back as Yule, or Saturnalia, or any number of other names. They've have 3000+ years to get used to the idea of a religious holiday in December. If not Jesus, then Santa, Thor, Saturn, and many others. There will be gods. If you really are an atheist, sing it ironically. If you're a different religion, show some decorum or ask for your own song.

If there's one day in the whole year a big girl's blouse can cram the victim card straight up their ass and deal with it without winging to the courts, it's Christmas. Seriously.

doglover: You want to celebrate Christmas? CHRISTmas? You might just have to accept that Christian mythology is kinda sorta really important to some people.

And it's kinda really NOT to others.

Sing your CHRISTmas songs all you want. There are many hours of every day (and every hour of every day during the break) to sing whatever goddam songs you want to. Hell, send your kid to Christian school and they can sing Jesus-y songs every farking day if you want.

If you keep the Jesus songs in public schools, fine. But be prepared to accommodate the non-Christians when a holiday of theirs comes along. I can't wait to hear these religiously oppressed people throw a shiatfit when li'l Muhammad wants to have a day or two set aside during Ramadan where the kids can't eat or drink all day and he gets to read selections of the Koran.

"Oh no, that's not right! We're not going to allow that!! Only CHRISTmas stuff!!1!"

Sounds to me like a government institution giving one religion special preference.

All or nothing. Which do you prefer?

"jesus loves me this i know cause the bible told me so" is cool. it's so gay.

also,

I summoned up the living dead
and demons in the skies
I drank from chalice warm and red
and watched the virgin die

Present at ungodly births in holy paradise
I spread eternal dark on earth
And raped mother of Christ
(Oh, mother of Christ)

C'mon baby raise your knife
Welcome darling to my sacrifice
(Oh, sacrifice)

Tie the angel to the altar
Sacrifice to Lord of hell
Let the warm blood torrent, baby
While the moonlight sets the night on spell

To many social conservatives exposed penises in art are considered a form of obscenity... despite the vast majority of them in art museums belonging to the baby Jesus.

What of it?

"Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
He'll come around when chimes ring out,
It's Christmas time again.
Peace on earth will come to all,
If we just follow the light,
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
Pullin' on the reins.
Bells are ringin', children singin',
All is merry and bright,
So jump in bed, and cover your head,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

Peace on earth will come to all,
If we just follow the light,
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight,
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

No. Christians ruin every non-religious event with their sky wizard. They can fark off. Christmas isn't organically related to Jesus' birth. Any connection is artificial in nature so why let them steal a secular event?

This would make a much better Christmas hymn, it's very uplifting.

Anyway I'm quite the atheist, I'm very atheiy, but it's Christmas, it's a Christian thing, I don't get why we go around making sure everyone else is happy at the expense of Christians. When other religious holidays come around we let them do their thing and no one cares, but Christmas we need to play down Christianity? I don't get it. My company just sent out Christmas cards saying some variant of 'happy holidays' in a dozen languages, but no mention of Christmas. I think the least we should do is acknowledge that the holiday we are about to have is Christmas. Who does that hurt?

Bontesla: No. Christians ruin every non-religious event with their sky wizard. They can fark off. Christmas isn't organically related to Jesus' birth. Any connection is artificial in nature so why let them steal a secular event?

Of course it's artificial in nature, there are no gods, no sons of gods therefore Jesus never existed. That's basic logic. However that doesn't change the fact that what we're about to do is a Christian holiday. We're not Christians but this is one of the most important days on the Christian calendar. We get holidays because we live in countries that grew up with a predominantly Christian heritage.

If you want to deny Christians their holiday then apply it to all other religions. Ban all religious holidays and observances/feasts etc. Why does no one complain at Easter? or Eid? Or Diwali? It's only Christmas this crap starts.

2012-12-18 06:52:22 AM
I was thinking about this a while ago during a discussion with someone who gave Frosty the Snowman as an example of a secular Chistmas character. I accepted it, but afterwards I was all... hmmmm...

So, we have this wonderful and faultlessly good creature who miraculously comes into being (or is "born", if you will) and leads his merry group ("disciples" you could call them) on adventures. Due to the wickedness (or sins) of bad people there comes a situation where Frosty must give his life to save that of his flock. Everyone is sad that Frosty is dead, then on Christmas Eve Santa Claus (a.k.a. Father Christmas) comes and resurrects him, then whisks him away while frosty says, "I'll be back again some day!"

Now, does Frosty sound like some other legendary figure we know of? The name escapes me...

/never picked up on the subtext as a kid
