SockMonkeyHolocaust: This is the most significant cultural milestone since 1985 when Hasbro stopped making a "WHITES ONLY" EZ-Bake oven.

Most homes already have a gender-neutral oven. It's about the size of a washing machine and lives in the kitchen. Parental guidance advised.

Honestly, I think we could go a long way towards addressing some of this country's problems if people, and especially anti-feminists, would realize that many of those differences are *gasp* not actually caused by genitals.

Except they are, I taught young children for awhile. There are clear differences in boys and girls even from a very young age. Boys are hyper and fidgety, they have a lot of trouble sitting still and focusing while the girls are much more calm and pleasant. This is hormones, biology, it has nothing to do with gender specific stimuli.

Where did you get your medical degree from, and what research have you done on the endocrine system in infants?

First, with all due respect, I believe you're mistaking anecdotal evidence for data, and trying to dress it up in language you've heard from other people about "hormones, biology". For example, I doubt you can name the specific hormones involved other than the well-known three (starting with T, E, and A, specifically).

Second, your anecdotal evidence is an attempt to show causation from a vague correlation - children play differently... therefore it must be caused by "hormones, biology". Science has only a passing acquaintance with that conclusion.

Third, your evidence is several years late to discuss differences that are solely due to "hormones, biology," since you're talking about a bunch of talking kids. Start focusing on a year or less to try to avoid some of the social influences, and even then, we know that some social influences start at birth. You need to be literally working on newborns to attempt to make claims about significant gender differences due to "hormones, biology"... otherwise, all you're really talking about are gender differences due to "advertising".

The people that say gender is simply a social construct are not looking at the reality of the biological and hormonal differences between the sexes.

(i) The people that say "gender is simply a social construct" don't exist. Don't put words in my mouth, because I'll call you on it every single time.
(ii) The people that say "behavior... is hardwired into them" do exist, and, as shown above, have no credibility due to their lack of science or logic.

There are biological differences between the sexes. No one claims there are not (although there are plenty who will claim that someone says that, but you don't know her, she's from Canada. It's called straw feminism).
There are also differences between the sexes that are caused by social influences. Attempting to deny that means you're simply not looking at reality.

Huh. When I was a kid we didn't have EZ-Bake ovens. We made pies out of mud. Mud is gender neutral, last I checked. So maybe the right thing to do is to abandon Hasbro and their gender confused appliances altogether, and go back to having kids play in the mud.

This. Kids should learn how to bake for real. It's not that hard. The results will be more consistent and better than the EZ bake work. And you get to spend time with your kids. Sounds like a win win.

My five year old nephew wanted an ez-bake for Christmas so badly, but he begged us to get it for him and not tell Santa (or anyone else) he wanted "a girl oven." This happened about 10 years ago, but I was shocked that my nephew was already aware of gender issues by then.

Happy Hours: CruJones: jdamaral: I can appreciate the move but at the same time, can't we just let our boys play with pink stuff without giving them the impression that they're gay or girls or whatever? Pretty silly.

Ever think its simply to sell more?

This was all due to some 4 year old boy who liked to cook who had a 13 year old sister who wants to be an activist. Of those 44,000 people who signed the petition, they'll probably sell an additional 100 units or so.

I disagree. Cooking really isn't considered something that only girls do anymore. My father was and my brother is a great cook. My nephew enjoys pretending he is cooking like his dad. He also enjoys Legos, nerf guns, football and other typically boy stuff. A toy oven that was blue rather than pink would make all the difference to him.

A few years back, my 2 and a half year old niece got a wooden house with assorted toy fixtures for Christmas. Her older brother, then 4, joined her in playing with it... to which his grandfather angrily told him that that was a girl toy, he wasn't allowed to use it, and he should play with toy guns instead.

/but yeah, children's choices in toys are solely due to their genitals...

My sons have always liked to cook and when they were younger had pretend dishes, kitchen toys, etc. When they were 5 & 6 I remember asking them if they would like an EZ Bake Oven and they said "no way, that's a girl toy". When I asked them why they said it was because the box only showed girls playing with it and no boys.

Put a bunch of little kids in a room, you will see the girls begin to form groups and talk and play games with each other while the boys are attaching each other and throwing things around. You can try and bend their behavior as much as you want, you will never succeed, it is hardwired into them. You can do this again and again as much as you want with as many kids as you want and you will always see similar results.

The people that say gender is simply a social construct are not looking at the reality of the biological and hormonal differences between the sexes.

Pffttt...."reality" itself is nothing more than an ideological construct propagated to shore up the hegemony of the phallocentric Western scientific establishment.

Really? So men and women AREN'T different? They DON'T have physical differences and hormonal differences? The differences in testosterone, for instance, between males and females makes no difference at all in things like aggression and muscle development? And those have absolutely no effect on how males and females interact with their environment and one another?

Nothing at all? It's ALL socially determined?

Wow seems I really touched a nerve did I? I'd be happy to have a reasoned discussion but I don't have much patience for snark and mockery which is what so many self-described feminists seem to fall back on all too often when someone challenges their convictions.

No I'm not a doctor, but it doesn't appear you are either. I do have a Masters in engineering and years of experience in science and research so I am *somewhat* familiar with the scientific method. I report my observations with young kids and I stand by my assessment; boys and girls are different, period. The current trend of our society is to make everything gender neutral and co-ed and I think this is a mistake. In fact I would go so far as to say some of the problems we see with men in our society currently, including (yes I will go there) several recent mass shootings which all involved men could be at least partly a result of a society that seems to see masculinity and male traits as behavior to be discouraged.

Apparently Hasbro had issues with the previous design of the oven after having switched over from an incandescent bulb. Their current marketing is aimed at girls - even their website specifies that it is for girls.

The whole letter is probably just a publicity stunt. Hasbro probably realized their branding for this product was out of date and they could squeeze out some more sales if they aimed it at both sexes.

I'm sure people will eat it up as being progressive like people eat up misleading "carbon-neutral" and other enviro-bullshiat that every product has on it now.
