Why would they replace him? A much easier transition would be to give Leno his own show 5 days a week at 10pm. Then he stays with the network. His show will boost their 10pm ratings and save them on new show development dollars. It'll work as a great lead-in then to the nightly news and Fallon's new show. Everyone's happy and making money hand over fist.

2012-12-17 06:39:27 PM
And I'll add that I grew up on Carson. I stayed up to watch Letterman too. Leno has never made me laugh. The only thing that has entertained me on the show is done by other people. He's the Bobby Flay of late night.

It seems to me you're making that statement based off his movies and/or his time on SNL. I agree that he wasn't funny at all in those instances.

I can't watch Jay Leno. Does he still laugh at his old jokes? I couldn't stand the way he would go into a laughing fit, shoulders going up and down like his lame joke was the funniest thing ever.

Or let Leno be the lead on an American Topgear, without help from the executives. Jay Leno's garage is great.

I know he declined, but he knows that he has to tow the line and knew he couldn't be allowed to do it right.

THIS oh so THIS. Colbert has been on a non stop slaughter of jokes in the last 4-5 months, pretty much since the election went into the final throws. His show has been extremely hilarious and enjoyable to watch.

They don't want funny, they want someone they can count on to bring people to the tube every night. Beside, if someone is really funny to one person, then to another they might be bland, or offensive, or weird. David Cross, Larry the cable guy, Daniel Tosh, Jeff Dunham. All have followings, but are offensive or hated if you don't like them.

I really wonder how long that business model will hold up?

I would have heartily agreed with you up until about a year and a half ago, when out of desperation I tuned into Late Night (sleepless night and Ferguson was a rerun). Fallon's really hit his groove, and it's a fun show to watch.

As talk show hosts go, Fallon is the closest to Carson I've seen since Carson quit. Fallon is one of the few who doesn't make the show all about him. He does a great job of including guest in skits and doesn't try to make them look foolish for playing along.

I think Fallon is ready. I know the Tonight Show is.

2012-12-17 10:49:11 PM
One of these days the networks are going to wake up to the fact that late night talk shows' raison d'être is long gone. We are no longer stuck with only a handful of stations that all sign off the air by 2 AM. Late night talk shows were cheap and easy to produce for the few that were still up and watching that late. Now there are hundreds of stations that never go off the air with a wide variety of content (other than just talk). At this point I think that they would do even better to just outright cancel The Tonight Show and just show a few years of re-runs of The Best of Carson.

Regardless, whatever decision that NBC makes will be wrong. Making wrong decisions is the only thing that NBC has excelled at for a very long time.

Sadly agree with you. Really live Community, but I doubt the fans will find much to love now that the showrunner is gone.

Happily, though, this paves the way for Alison Brie to sign up with some progressive new nudity-mandated show.

You're not wrong there. They should just air a test pattern in the 11:35-12:35 slot. It'd be more entertaining and less predictable than Leno at this point.

Agreed, I love Fallon's musical stuff.

I don't know if I want Ferguson to get a bigger gig. He's perfect where he is, and like Conan, I fear he'd lose some of his silly charm if he moved to an earlier time slot. The stuff he can get away with probably wouldn't work if he were on earlier.

I think Ferguson just needs better writers. On pretty much every episode, it seems they often have time to waste after his monologue, and the bits he does like reading people's tweets have gotten more stale than Leno's headlines or Letterman's top 10 lists. The guy can deliver a joke better than Leno and Fallon combined, and there'd be some potential if he had better materials. My guess is CBS doesn't get enough ratings for that time slot to budget for some decent writers.

2012-12-18 12:58:10 AM

I thought they discontinued The Tonight Show in January 2010?  2014 should be interesting if both Leno and Letterman decide to hang it up.  Rumor had it years ago that Ferguson likes his time slot, so he's not going anywhere.  I'd say bring in Conan to replace Dave and nothing would really change except for the band, but by then, if late night on the Big Three is moving towards younger hosts, Conan would be the elder statesman.

I liked some of Kimmel's stuff a few years back.  I think between Octomom and the whole fiasco at NBC he had his own personal goldmine for awhile.  And oh yeah, the other thing between he and his then-girlfriend trading videos.  Haven't really seen anything recently that made me about fall over laughing, but then again my computer is so old its powered by a Dorito.

As I recall, Leno wanted to just leave NBC, but NBC execs didn't want to let him out of his contract. I think that people hate on Leno over that whole mess because they find it easier to use him as a scapegoat than to go after the NBC execs who were also involved in that mess.

DirecTV + Western Time Zone = Stewart and Colbert at 8 or 9 pm (DST dependent) FTW

Then I record Craig Ferguson and watch it the next day.

2012-12-18 08:48:08 AM
Well, here's the thing. We're only hearing that NBC is not planning on renewing his contract. Is this because Leno is genuinely thinking of retiring now, or because he is officially being fired finally? We're not getting that detail.

If it's the former, then ther shouldn't be any problems. Leno said in "The War for Late Night" that he was thinking of retiring in a few years, anyway, with guest hosts coming in as "tryouts."

If he's getting fired, expect "Late Night War III."

But here are some facts: Leno's ratings are down, and he took a pay cut (he doesn't live off the "Tonight Show" money, so it's not that big a deal to him). So "The Tonight Show" is struggling right now. New blood wouldn't be a bad thing.

You could replace Jay Leno with several well-placed dog turds and I would laugh more.

I've watched maybe 2 minutes total of that douchebag since he farked Conan, Letterman and Carson.

I hope he ends up like some unfunny combination of Rodney Dangerfield, Don Rickles and Henny Youngman. Convinced he's still got it, trying to get on some show to restart his career, and only being laughed at by people as he walks past.

In other words, FARK. JAY. LENO. RIGHT IN THE BUTTOCKS.
