P51-D Mustang. Greatest overall combat fighter of it's generation, and maybe of all time.

...yeah, it came up on my news feed way early. Then I realized that about everything in my neighborhood is named "Wright".

They had to clear out the Air Force Museum over the weekend though. They found one of the airplanes in the exhibits "accidentally" was still fueled.

Coolest? Either the P-38 or SR-71.

It remains the mighty Pegasus. Cool as your planes and gyros are, none of them can shiat on your neighbor's car.

I'm sure a lot of people would say the Millenium Falcon, but I always thought X-wings were way cooler.

Actually, there was some dude in Australia who supposedly beat them by several years.

Unfortunately, dude was apparently very secretive and didn't hire a publicist. I think it was Lawrence Hargrave. I'll have to check.

If there's anything cooler than an AC-130, I'd like to see it.

Isn't their a plane that has planes on its wings that it can launch? Is that it? I am voting for that one.

//Yo dawg I heard you liked planes, so we put some planes on your plane.

On one hand that give my inner child a mile long explosives boner.

On the other hand, if I wanted to blow up my neighbor's car, I don't need a plane I can't fly and bombs I can't afford. I'd just kinda build a fire around it and hope.

However, as Adam Carolla points out from time to time, a pegasus shiat from 100' up will put a hole in the roof. But it's also deniable. What? No. That wasn't MY pegasus. It must be someone else's flying horse.

They put the "Close", the "Air" and the "Support" in Close Air Support. Plus, they come in pairs.

/designed quickly, built quickly, deployed quickly, effective very quickly

Actually it looks like the wing project was called "Tom Tom" It's a decedent of the Goblin project.

Agreed. I have seen it twice at the Pima Air and Space Museum. The SR71 is the pinnacle of aircraft design.

That was actually "reasonably" common. They're known as Parasite aircraft. Goes back to WW1.

Jack and shiat.

The idea was long range bombers needed fighter escorts, but long range fighters couldn't long range enough. So if they put fighters ON the bombers somehow (many designs were tried) then you'd have your own, built in escort. So you could deploy bombers without worrying how many fighter escorts they had.

Actually turns out midget planes that fit into a bomb bay aren't as good as full sized fighters. Then the medium sized wing ones kept getting ripped off or rattled too much by vortexes on the wing. The belly ones increased drag too much.

Basically they're the VR Boy of planes.

Old_Chief_Scott: The de Havilland Dragon Rapide.

From the wiki:

One famous incident was in July 1936 when two British MI6 intelligence agents, Cecil Bebb and Major Hugh Pollard, flew Francisco Franco in Dragon Rapide G-ACYR from the Canary Islands to Spanish Morocco, at the start of the military rebellion which began the Spanish Civil War.

I imagine the Brits--particularly their nobility and royalty--had their fingers in the Russian Revolution, the German Revolution, the Spanish Civil War and lots of other European debacles. I figure they decided it was easier to put a puppet in and control them than to fight several million men on the battlefield.

So many good choices. I love A-10s, Saab Gripens, AC-130's. I'm always into the ground attack aircraft. I'll add B-25, Hawker Typhoon/Tempest, Fairey Firefly, Corsair, Lysander, Mosquito, Beaufighter, and the SPADs from WWI.

To be fair, the Goblin does kinda resemble a flying AMC Gremlin.

Personal favorite: the F4U Corsair. Love the inverted gull wings, and it had a damned decent service record to boot.

Also, a tip of the hat to the Russkies for the Su-27. I built a model of it in my teenage years that gave me the weirdest boner. Oh, that slender, swan-like neck...

The Sikorsky Russki Vitjaz. First four engine plane, built in 1913. That's Imperial Russia.

We had nothing like at all. It had two passenger cabins. And passengers could walk around in it.

Uglier and a better record.  Still love the Spitfire, but have to salute the Hurricane.
