besides, the right took down ACORN for something they didn't do. why not take the national rampage association down for ensuring american psychos have the right to bear assault rifles?

Being the NRA social-media guy must be a sweet gig. Every time there's a massacre, you get like a week off; that's like 37 weeks vacation a year these days.

You call it blame. Some would call it accountability

The NRA has only about 4.5 million members. If enough liberally minded people joined it, they could outvote what they perceive as wrongdoing. Otherwise, haters gonna hate.

Leeds: Why do these people think that raising the cost of guns will prevent these tragedies???

This is a mental health issue, people. We should all be trying to figure out how to better spot someone who is going to snap, not change the price point for guns that he didn't even purchase.

I understand that the anti-gun nuts are pleased with last week's events, but that is not a reason to allow them to divert our attention from addressing the root of this problem.

so now you're actually in favor of Obamacare? that's an interesting switch in viewpoints....

The NRA is a machine designed to give power to Republicans and shield them from any responsibility for these 2nd Amendment success stories. A Democrat would have to be stupid to give them money and power.

I don't want to take guns from their cold dead hands. I want to bury them with their guns, because that's two victories for America.

The NRA is a front for arms dealers. They'd be prosecuted as a criminal conspiracy (if not a terrorist organization) in any other country.

Well, he didn't make the children watch the walking dead and dexter until they died did he?

If you want to get into a serious conversation about how US culture has largely embraced violence (fake, but violence none the less), by all means lets do so. That discussion will absolutely lead to where effective preventative measures will originate from: how mental health is (not) dealt with in this country.

When people start talking about meaningful gun control reform and the serious/sincere treatment of mental health issues effective change could arise. You can blame violence in culture all you want, the root of THAT issue is how the individual deals with it mentally, not the violence itself.

2012-12-17 11:41:40 AM
The NRA spent $3.5 million last election cycle buying candidates and continually telling us there is something unconstitutional about limiting the number of rounds a psychopath can unload into children every minute.

The Brady Campaign, by comparison spent about $70K on two candidates.

We had one random mass shooting every three weeks in 2012.

A crazy person without a gun is a crazy person

A crazy person with an assault weapon is a massacre.

Give $20, a dollar for each kid, to the Brady Campaign to at least help counter the NRA's demented message.

This is your average gun nut celebrating the massacre in Newtown on facebook.

media.commercialappeal.com

It's like some weird tribal dance. They wear their sophistic arguments like war paint, and believe themselves to be rugged individuals.

Now I can sort of respect Apple fanbois. After all they know they are tools of some corporate pigs. But these gun nuts really think they are expressing their own opinions, not those of a handgun marketing organization.

These are just the early talking points. Has the NRA made it's official "blame anything but guns" statement yet?

Clearly the only solution is to arm even more people with guns.

Teachers, Principles, etc.

It is interesting how radio silent the pro-gun people have been after this. I don't think this has ever happened before. I think they collectively decided that nothing they say will help their cause at this point. A month or two from now, they will make arguments against whatever the specific legislation that Feinstein proposes-and they will win (remember, the Republicans still control the House). Tactically, it's very logical for them to shut the fark up right now.

2012-12-17 11:45:10 AM

d23: It's the NRA that refused to have a reasonable debate about the situation and fights every reasonable proposal on the table. So, yeah, I talking about the NRA is justified.

But I also think the pro-gun people (like myself) should be protesting the NRA. The NRA has decided that it will defend gun ownership, period. Things like BG checks, magazine capacities*, restricting the sale/importation of fully-auto weapons (which is in place, n'est-ce pas?), or safe-storage laws are targets of the NRA, for no reason other than "any gun law is a bad law".

Once we break their throttle-hold on any discussion of gun law, we can start having a real discussion. Oh, and the real culprit is how we view and treat mental health. When someone unstable is allowed to purchase and own heavy weaponry (I include broadswords and flails in that definition), we have all the makings of another tragedy.

*not necessarily things I agree with

Mrtraveler01: Clearly the only solution is to arm even more people with guns.

There may be some merit to training teachers in firearms and issuing them weapons. It wouldn't prevent people like this nutjob from getting a gun, but the training might help the teachers defend themselves and their students.

More like, "Blame where it belongs but everyone is too scared to say so" game begins.

There are only two things to blame for these incidents:

1) NRA
2) Mental health monitoring system.

Together they create the perfect storm.

The latest poll that I've seen indicate that 70% of the NRA members already support some regulation, especially stuff like background checks and waiting periods.

As usual it the elite members that are driving the entire group.

I suspect that such is unconstitutional. Better go ask Justice Kennedy his opinion, since he alone gets to decide these things these days.
