So, what's the big deal: one guy bites another, and it's national news?

Man. It's as if everyone has private eyes, and they're watching you.

As a 29 year old, I am often saddened by my generation's lack of pop culture knowledge. It's not a matter of being stupid, it means they're living in a tiny bubble, I think I'd rather hang out with the stupid guy.

As a 24 year old, I can completely believe this happened and I don't blame him. If your parents were into 70s music then you probably never heard H&O. If your parents were into 80s music like mine, then you grew up hearing their greatest hits while your parents made dinner in the kitchen. Some of my coworkers my age didn't know who John Wayne was. THAT was inexcusable.

Hell, one of my fellow old farts in the office and I continually quote Airplane! and the young whippersnappers don't even have a clue what we are talking about. Now that is truly inexcusable.

Sure, it's a laugh and the reporter could use some adult education, but some things are better left unsaid.

As a 25 year old, I second this. I consider myself pretty well informed about Ye Olden Days When Everything Was Better, but I don't know jack shiat about H&O. That also may have to do with the fact that my parents mostly listened to funk, soul, and jazz. None of that honky stuff.

I have a coworker about your age and he never heard of In Living Color. I gave him homework. He had to tell me the character Jim Carrey played when he would say "let me show you something" and tell me the deal with the pickle in the jar. It started with him telling me the only funny thing he saw Damon Wayans did was My Wife and Kids.

I'm a 29 year old too and my roommate and another good friend were trying to insist that the Beatles would be forgotten once out generation was dead but Dianna Ross & the Supremes and other Mo Town artists would live on forever.

And these were a couple of white kids from Virginia Suburbs who grew up with Beatles.

I also trained an intern recently who didn't get a John Hughes reference. That made me hurt a little inside.

Wow. My office is pretty much the older peoples... us youngin's are early to mid 30's so we know what's up. The absolute youngest in our office is 24, but he's obsessed with James Dean and Madonna, and anything 80's really, so he's up to snuff as well.

It harkens to that one link that was posted here a few months ago about all those kids not knowing who Paul McCartney was... that's just sad.

2012-12-17 10:10:21 AM
I have to admit, I didn't remember that Hall and Oates did Maneater.

But I probably would have gotten the joke if the headline been "Maneater: Messina bitten by Stills."

*shrug* Pop culture is ephemeral almost by definition. People are most familiar with pop culture details from the times in their own lives when they paid attention to such things, and cannot comprehend why everyone doesn't have the same level of knowledge of all eras.

Lennon transcends a lot of those boundaries but he is not universal... and is probably becoming less so each year.

2012-12-17 10:11:55 AM
First of all: 27 here, and I got the reference. Found it hilarious. Not that Hall and Oates are all that memorable for their art. In fact, I'm quite earwormed right now, but the circumstances that lead to this headline are too damn funny to mind that. It's like the Universe or God or whatever wanted to get an eighties pop music joke into the newspaper.

I was buying a new phone not too long ago at Verizon, there was a guy about my age waiting to be next... the kid asks me if I want to donate my old phone which my ex had given me, I said "No. I'm gonna go Office Space on it..." The guy waiting cracks the hell up and the kid just looks at us like we're nuts.

Office Space! That wasn't even 80's! WTF?

That was my paternal grandfathers name as well. Good guy, didnt say much, smoked a lot, was old and died when I was around 10 years old.

I never cared for the name because I associated it with crushed stale cigarettes, dusty LifeSavers and faded brown slacks (that and the familys pronunciation of it kind of rhymed with 'camel').

Clearly the name requires a long "E".

Also, forgot to add this the first time around.

In fairness, there's far too much pop culture out there to be familiar with all of it and most of it hasn't aged well.
