Am I the only one who never really liked Twinkies?

Well farking duh. But I do hope you all went out on eBay and spent $100 or more on Twinkies.

And yeah, they do suck. Ding Dongs on the other hand, oh ho ho!

if people cared this much about having a twinkie before, the company wouldn't have gone bankrupt.

Yep. The company might have gone under but the infrastructure, brand names and the iconic recipes that they represent are still worth a fortune.

Tastykake's Tasty-klairs, which I hate myself for even typing that tortured title.

But they are farking delicious and you can be fooled into thinking they might have actually been baked under the watchful eye of human beings at some point in their creation process. I haven't missed Hostess treats since.

If people want them and are willing to part with money. Capitalism fi-fi-fi-finds a way.

2012-12-16 05:43:52 PM
Of course someone is going to buy the recipe and the associated trademarks.

Quite probably it will be purchased by a shell company owned by the people who ran the original company into the ground.

It's a time-honored way of looting a company: cash out your stock, intentionally mis-manage it into bankruptcy, raid the pension fund, fark the creditors and employees. Then buy up all the real assets at fire-sale prices, set up business again under a new name with no debt and no pesky union contracts. Then you hire the old staff back at half their old wage with no benefits while loudly proclaiming yourself to be a "job creator".

Despite the glee and schadenfreude of some leftwing media types, there is a market for Twinkies and it is likely to be filled by someone.

I'm hiring some of those employees who were let go. Their salaries SUCKED. 25+ years at a job and earning 28K a year?! I've been shocked at some of the salaries I've seen written on aps. Even with the most incredible of benefits packages, that is piss poor for a couple of decades of your life.

Only because some of the key ingredients went on the Chemical Weapons precursor list. Once they straighten that snag out, it will be business as usual.

Ah Devil Dogs. So dry, oh, so dry. I don't think it's an old guy thing. I'm in my early 30's, and I remember them quite well. It may be a regional thing, though. I had the displeasure of growing up in the NYC area.

Depends on what they were doing. $13/hr + benefits isn't bad money for unskilled / semi-skilled labor. Not good, but not bad either. You do realize that some people are quite content to do some menial repetitive task every day for decades and don't have any ambition to do anything more than that, right?

Now if we're talking skilled tradesmen, that's absurd.

Plus it depends on where they are located. $28K + benefits a year is really crappy pay in some places while it's most certainly a living wage in others.

So who gets the money for the bids on those recipes? The employees should sue for those recipes, and decide to either open their own business as some kind of co-op, or sell them to recover what was stolen from the pension.

In an area of New England where a starter home is 175K - ouch. These people are semi-skilled but for here these salaries are pretty low.

I know there are those who are content at a menial labor job- thank God- because someone has to do those jobs- but I'm hiring them at almost what they were earning at their old job and it is for semi-skilled health care positions. Care attendants and LNAs only earn around $12 to $13 an hour to start. (One on one home care- pretty nice jobs) When the laid off workers started trickling in, I didn't want to insult them. Now they are bringing friends to apply. Wonderful people- I'm glad to have them.
