Oddly when I search for news about this hot dog guy, the only stuff I can find is conservative sites. So can anyone confirm what really happened? Or is this another one of those fake conservative things? Like that guy who attacked a union guy and then was pushed down himself, and he went on national tour in a wheelchair.

Fake conservative thing.

First they tried the comedian/reporter/blogger gets beat down thing - until the rest of the video showed he was the aggressor.

Then they tried the 'union thugs tore down the tent with women and children in it' - until video proved the 'union thugs' were not union members and there were no women and children in the tent.

Lastly they tried the 'black man beaten and called uncle tom' thing - except the guy was never hit and his stuff was in the tent that was involved in the previous story and most of the money raised for the guy came from union members.

To top it all off - every one of these stories happened near, in or on top of the Americans for Prosperity tent - the Koch Brothers grass roots organization. AfP only provided all the food, beverages and $25 gas cards to it's attendees and their 'benefactors' stand to profit tremendously from every weakening of worker rights in this country.

Shocking coincidence?

The problem is that it wasn't phrased very well. Someone on the left, who basically agrees with the ideology, will give benefit of the doubt, and hear "Intelligence and hard work are necessary but not always sufficient for success, and the structure of the society you live in is responsible for a portion of that success."

Someone on the other side will hear "Intelligence and hard work are neither necessary nor sufficient for success, because some people have both and don't succeed. The only determining factor is the help you received from society." A plain reading of the text can easily support that interpretation as well.

It was basically an off the cuff statement, and the President didn't think very much, or at all, about how it would sound to anyone on the other side.

Educate me: is The Washington Examiner a "conservative" site?

Google is your friend

Let's ask Wikipedia:

When Anschutz started the Examiner in its current format, he envisioned creating a conservative competitor to The Washington Post. According to Politico, "When it came to the editorial page, Anschutz's instructions were explicit - he 'wanted nothing but conservative columns and conservative op-ed writers,' said one former employee." The Examiner's conservative writers include Byron York (National Review), Michael Barone (American Enterprise Institute, Fox News), and David Freddoso (National Review, author of The Case Against Barack Obama).[4]

The paper endorsed John McCain in the 2008 presidential election[11] and Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary for mayor in 2010.[12] On December 14, 2011, it endorsed Mitt Romney for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, saying he was the only Republican who could beat Barack Obama in the general election.[13]

Make no mistake. Obama was intentionally trolling conservatives with that statement. The whole thing was meant to anger them and he knew it. He touched on one of the right's rawest nerves: to have the audacity to suggest the fact that maybe they aren't the bootstrappy "rugged individualists" they claim to be and have actually *gasp* had a little bit of help from government programs to give them a leg-up in their successes. And the GOP took the bait handily and built up their entire convention against that theme ("WE BUILT THIS! DERP!!!). A convention that, if you recall, actually caused Mitt Romney's support to DECREASE rather than giving him the usual post-convention bounce. They played right into Obama's trap and didn't realize it until it was too late.

Goddman dude, cry more. This is why much of America regards the right wing as a bunch of whiny crybabies anymore. They take out of context quotes and drive them into the ground. They think failure is success. I, for one, would like to see the President co-opt Union thugs to beat the shiat of more conservative hippies, just like Nixon did in the 1960s. If there's one thing most everybody on Fark can agree on, the right needs a good ass whooping to make it see reality and get back on track.

I didn't cry about killing Big Bird. I went out and made sure the idiot(s) who wanted to do it never got into office. Also, I voted.

Butthurt to the left as far as the eye can see. Now go back to beating up on little old men pushing hotdog carts.

What butthurt? I'm just reminding you of the fact that the Tea Party cost the GOP the US Senate twice in the past four years.

You don't want me to remind you that the Tea Party cost the GOP the US Senate twice in the past four years?

Because they did, the Tea Party did cost the GOP the US Senate twice in the past four years.

;)

Four Years? Really? The Tea party swept the House only two years ago. Time must be condensed in your universe. Just give up on trolling me.

Moosecakes: Oddly when I search for news about this hot dog guy, the only stuff I can find is conservative sites. So can anyone confirm what really happened? Or is this another one of those fake conservative things? Like that guy who attacked a union guy and then was pushed down himself, and he went on national tour in a wheelchair.

Dear God:

Thank you for sending an angry mob to inexplicably destroy my business so you could make a bunch of other people give me money to rebuild the business you destroyed.
