If it can't be eaten, drunk, or smoked, don't bother.

Ahh, regifting.

One year my wife and I won a bunch of stuff at her company's Christmas party. 100 dollar gift cards to various chain restaurants (gross) an iPod, Starbucks gift cards, and tons of other things that other people would enjoy. So we didn't have to do shopping for anyone that year, we just regifted the stuff we won, and used the money we saved to buy a bunch of booze.

Good times.

The most infuriating people for gift giving are those that "don't need anything" for Xmas, but act all hurt in front of all the other relatives if, indeed they get nothing.

But if you actually get them a gift to stop this then they criticize every gift you give them and HAND IT BACK TO YOU.

Then they act so "holier than thou" by bleating that YOU are wasting precious money. You have to pinch every penny so your kids can inherit it.

You can't win.

"Regift" is perhaps the only word which manages to be tackier than the verbs "disrespect" and "evidence". Could a worse sentence than "He disrespected me, and evidenced it by regifting my present to him" exist?

We have a couple of relatives like this. Over the years we've donated rabbits in their name through Heifer International, or gift boxes for soldiers overseas. They can't really criticize it to our faces (which makes them grumpy) without looking like total asshats. Ah, Joy to everyone! LOL

I think he regifted, then he degifted, and now he's using an upstairs invite as a springboard to a Super Bowl sex romp!

Give 'em a card certifying a donation to a charity they might support.

If they still whine, kick 'em in the fork.

Good call, Attila the Mom. Wow am I glad I don't have such insensitive asses in my life. My family tree is heavily speckled with teh looney tunes so gifting can vary from regifting (and including the original To: / From: label), giving someone something you really liked because you think they might like it too (no matter if it is very used - or if its a pie thats 1/3rd eaten) or giving incredibly uneven gifts (a really nice used car for a teenager, just a Hallmark card for his brother and you tell him it's because he's a dooshbag). God I love the Holidays. Ho Ho Ho!

Nine rules on four pages? Not spiffy.

This isn't really a response to TFA but I don't know why people look down on re-gifting. If you are just wrapping up something used from around your house, yah that's pretty tacky. However, if I receive a gift that I don't want or will never use and I know someone else who would love it/need it/use it, then what's the harm in re-gifting it? It's the same with gift cards. I've had people give me gift cards to places that didn't exist in my area or places I would never go. I don't know why it's a big deal to give to someone else. Of course people seem to be okay if I just gift them a re-gifted unused gift card if it's not for a holiday, but if I tried to give them a re-gifted gift card for their birthday they would be insulted (this is assuming they wrote names on the cardboard part). I had an incident where a friend won something at work and didn't want it so we re-gifted it to another friend for her birthday and the friend was super pleased with the gift until another friend let it slip that it was a gift one of us had won at work and then all of a sudden it was a terrible gift. I just don't see why it matters. Just because I got it for free doesn't mean it's worthless to you.
