I wish I hadn't read this. If we were to commit to never covering or bringing attention to these people, they would wither and at least remain out of sight, out of mind.

That being said, I cannot now unread this. If someone actually seriously injures or kills one of these people during a protest (not one of the children!), I will not be surprised or particularly sad.

WOW. That is powerful punditry.

Oh, you mean those clinics which provide free-of-cost reproductive healthcare, STD treatment, and safe sex education and protection measures to prevent abortions in the first place to people who otherwise couldn't afford to be treated, and who's patient population makes up 90+% Of their visits, with only a small fraction requesting abortive services?

Or the fact that far more abortions occur at private, unaffiliated clinics in the United States than Planned Parenthood?

monty666: So is this what all Christians are like?

No, this is:
Teacher Victoria Soto used her body to shield her students from the maniacal gunman who launched a massacre at a Connecticut school, relatives said Saturday.

Soto paid for her bravery with her life. But in doing so, the 27-year-old may have saved her first-graders from the murderous wrath of Adam Lanza - and became a hero.

red230: So let me get this straight. Professed Christians claiming that God didn't stop the massacre because we took prayer out of public school (Huckabee, American Family Association etc...) are good God fearing Christians pointing out that a lack of religion is to blame and trying to help and improve this country by trying to create an official state backed religion. Westboro Baptist Church are evil cultists to be despised for pointing out that a lack of religion is to blame and trying to help and improve this country by trying to create an official state backed religion.

Exactly. We as a society should shun Huckabee and Fischer just as we do the WBC.

buntz: I didn't even read the article, but can someone explain to me what they are protesting, exactly?

Their public statement is tragedies like this happen because God is angry that America isn't rounding up and prosecuting gays but as has already been well covered it's just a thinly veiled excuse. They are intentionally as offensive as possible to get local Govts and individuals to violate their rights so they can sue. They can't be argued or reasoned with precisely because they don't actually believe in their own garbage.

the labeling of them as real life trolls isn't an exaggeration.

Nothing good will come of this. Someone filled with grief is going to become unhinged. That is exactly what WBC wants so they can sue.

This is what confuses me about the WBC. I think most people reasonable here would not side with the WBC if put on a jury. How does the WBC leverage the legal system to make the scam work?

Civil trials rather than criminal. If you punch them, you probably won't go to jail for assault, but they'll sue you for the damages. And before you say jury nullification, that doesn't work in civil trials - the judge can make a finding of liability regardless of the jury's decision if he or she feels it's unreasonable.

I think any parent of a dead child would easily be able to claim temporary insanity, in a civil or criminal trial. And any judge or jury would pretend to believe them.

Relying on an insanity defense is a good way to end up locked up in an asylum for the rest of your life. It's why, outside of movies and television, it's really only used when facing the death penalty or life in prison.

Dude, stop bloviating. We both know there would be no legal repercussions for any parent drop kicking a Phelps in the nuts.

How is it the Bush administration was so good at setting up free speech zones to keep protesters away from the president and thus the media seeing them, but we can't find a way to keep these nuts away from a funeral?

Seems pretty simple. Setup a cage way off to the side out of earshot and sight, put them there. Why are they the exception?

Which is why you don't punch them. If they were really a nuisance they'd be dead already. If anyone was really that torqued off over a bunch of idiots being stupid, 4 or 5 well trained ex-military would have stormed their compound and slaughtered them. Took nearly 20 minutes for police response to something the care about - I'm sure they'll bust their butt to get over to some people who make their lives miserable. Might be the next morning before anyone does a "drive by" to see if anything's wrong. "Seriously captain, the gate was closed like normal and I didn't see any smoke - you know they don't have a buzzer on the gate".

The best approach is withdraw attention and money from them. Once the train of suit settlement money goes negative (ie. they get shot down on all filings, and now they're in the hole) they'll stop and move on to something that is maybe economically positive.

Isn't that the case here? Can't WBC be nailed for hate speech?

I don't think they're explicitly advocating killing anyone. Pretty sure they know where the "Fire in a crowded theater" line is by now.

Yep, they are a bunch of lawyers (not unlike our elected officials), not a real church.

I'm an excellent driver: Isn't it kind of ironic that we despise and revile these attention whores for forcing their socially unacceptable views onto wider society, but at the same time we can't accept the need to start a dialogue about avoiding these completely avoidable tragedies without being branded either a "Gun Nut" or a "Liberal gun hater". I don't see that the bipolar hatred for each position on guns is any better than the WBC spewing hate wherever they show up.

/Only in America

We can't accept the need to start a *reasonable* dialogue because there are few if any *reasonable* people in positions of authority any longer. We have become a nation of black or white, left or right, liberal or conservative, right to life or right to choose, gun lovers or gun haters. We don't really have any choices any more about who we put into power or who assumes control because no reasonable people want to be put into those positions and have their lives dissected for the world to see. Few are willing to be reasonable because they have been told they can have it their way and it's their right to get what they want... so many have bought into that 'my way or the highway' philosophy, and the media feeds it completely.

That's just one man's opinion, of course. Let's see if we can have reasonable discssion about it. I'm betting we can't.

I'm not condoning that someone permanently end these trolls in such a way that, providing no one else got hurt, it entailed such an explosion that Michael Bay himself would shiat himself with jealousy, but if that was to happen, I would gladly name my firstborn after that person.

I can't wait for the day when Fred Phelps dies, preferably in a compromising position in a seedy hotel with an underage male prostitute.
I plan to make a fortune selling "GOD HATES FRED PHELPS" signs.
There's no way the WPC will reveal when/where his funeral will be held... there would be way to big a risk of massive flooding from the millions of people that will take great pleasure pissing on his grave.
So people are going to have to buy these signs and post them EVERYWHERE!

Professor Duck: I'd be willing to pony up some money for an organization that would follow them around and set up acoustic shells (like the kind they use in the back of college stages to project the sound from the back) in front of them wherever they protested. Less people have to listen to them, and maybe hearing their own voices will make them realize something.

I had to think about it, at first I thought you meant "acoustic shells" like heavy artillery blanks. Which is not a bad idea either, although they wouldn't hear their own voices then.

I'll post this again because I think it's interesting.

Have you Farkers heard the interview/conversation that Kevin Smith had with 2 of the Phelps kids who escaped from the family? Basically, the Phelps nutballs were picketing his movie RedState. After the movie Smith was on stage doing a Q&A. These two Phelps outcasts were there to see the movie and spoke up to talk to him during this. Smith invited them on stage for a roughly half hour conversation about the family.

It's Plus One episode 15. Smith and his wife talk for a while at first about that evening, but if you want to get right to hearing the Phelps kids speak then just skip to 53 minutes in. But I recommend starting at 25:50 at least.

DancingElkCondor: Note also that none of the Gay Rights Group ever protest against Westboro Cult and their anti-homosexual themed protests. There is a reason why the Gay Rights Groups do not protest Westboro...they are both funded by the same Liberals

Of course, your non-three-digit IQ Liberal DoucheCrat will always try to link Westboro Cult with Christian Conservatives...when in fact Westboro is die-hard Liberal

As a member of several gay rights groups, I'd like to respectfully point out that you are wrong. We don't protest Westboro because they are unworthy of our time or energy. We've found our time (and yes, our "liberal money") is better spent trying to fight HIV--a crippling plague that doesn't care if you're conservative or not--and getting ourselves equal rights under the law. I gather from your comments you probably think we already have equal rights, but I digress.

Oh, and as a "three-digit IQ Liberal DoucheCrat," I can assure you that we don't associate Westboro with the conservative or liberal agendas. I file them under "batsh*t" and leave it at that. And if you think those bigoted, inbred, farktards voted for an African-American president in favor of abortion and gay rights, you are sincerely mistaken.

If there's a God, then there's an afterlife (as there's no belief in God without one), so perhaps He knows death is not an end. So dying in this life doesn't affect him much.

Do what they did when they tried to picket Comi-con in 2010. People just came out and made fun of them until they left.

Youtube video of the counter protest, and it is GLORIOUS.

Getting angry at these people only furthers their goals. They feed on the attention it gives them. That's why things like the Patriot Riders, while noble, irk me. They're giving them EXACTLY what they want.Ridiculing them, and laughing? They tend to pack their stuff up and leave.

I don't know that the people tomorrow will be able to manage a point and laugh, but I loved the Amazing Grace idea upthread. If I was closer, I would be there singing it.

Also, while there is one main road through Newtown (route 7), the roads to other places from that are... narrow. Easily blocked by overly-parked cars, if you catch my drift. They may not even be able to get close enough.

Also, New Englanders are masters of the "shun" - it is entirely possible they will be completely ignored.

Well, you know, the woodchipper murder happened in Sandy Hook...and I know exactly where that bridge is. Odds are the locals will protect their own and the WBC would have to walk in from either Brewster, NY or Hartford. The shunning will definitely happen, but I think there will also be people protecting the mourners from the sad spectacle of WBC hate.

I never said I worshiped him. I don't worship my own father and mother, but it doesn't mean I'm not respectful that I'm alive and glad they gave me the gift of life, and raised me to be a (hopefully) good individual. I'll be blunt. Up to 14 years ago I was devout atheist. Then my son died. I was going to kill myself because I couldn't take the grief. I asked for God's help, and I got it. I felt better. That's just me. Everyone's experience is different. I absolutely believe in God. I don't blame him for anything. I made my life either good or bad. Things happen in life. Personally, I think it's foolish to think there's a God who would actually make good or bad things happen. I do believe that there's a God who kept his word after the flood. He swore an oath to never again interfere in mans destiny. He'd allow us our own choices of free will either way. It was up to us to make the right decisions. Most of us know the right decisions, we just choose to ignore it. It's us that's f*cked up. Not him. Life is not a video game. We're not pawns being used by God and Satan. We're individuals who are casually observed. It must disappoint the sh*t out of God to see how we abuse the gifts. Personally, I think people are sh*t a lot of times because they choose the wrong decision even though they know it's the wrong thing to do. We're stupid children.
