If you can afford to buy one, you probably don't care.

Bentley's have never been known for great mileage, but then doesn't really matter.

13 mpg is not that bad for 200mph, especially one that is not race car slick.

The difference in a 170mph car and a 200mph car is enormous

Um, the 13 mpg number is its EPA test rating, where the car doesn't get over 60mph and averages something around 48. It's sure as hell not getting that mileage at 200 ticks.

At that speed, the Bugatti Veyron drains its gas tank in something like 12 minutes. I'm sure the Continental is no different.

My 2002 Land Rover Discovery gets 12 mpg, so this would make for a slight savings. I may have to look into picking one of these up.

I remember reading that at its absolute top speed (250 mph or so), the Veyron would ruin its tires in 15 minutes, which is why it's a good thing it only has gas for 12 minutes!

The Honda Insight I had would get 50 mpg going 90 mph. With the lrr tires and weird suspension layout it was terrifying.

A Z06 corvette gets 29 mpg highway. Mostly because it just idles at normal highway speeds.

I have as Nissan that gets 17, so 13 doesn't look so bad.

You'd think so, but you might be surprised. I remember listening to a harpy screeching about the price of gas, that she was putting in an $80,000 vehicle. Gas was $2/gal. A nice gentleman pointed out that maybe she shouldn't have bought a car she couldn't afford to fuel. She was still indignant when she stormed out.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I think Bentley makes some of the ugliest cars you can buy. I don't really get it, but I guess when you think about the types of people who usually buy Bentleys garish and ostentatious are really the only two points. Personally, if I had $250,000 to spend on cars I could find a lot better ways to spend it.

yep. i believe a set of those tires is something like $42,000.

That is what the average car in the USA was getting before the EPA set mileage goals.

Bentley doesn't make cars for people who like cars. They make cars for people who like their living room.

Ugly, sloppy and numb is fine, so long as it's plush, smooth and silent inside.

Personally, I'll take a kidney-banger any day of the week. I'm one of those crazies who would daily-drive an Ariel Atom, yet never be caught dead resting my ass inside some fluffed-up piece of trash like a Bentley or Rolls. Precision and feedback are the most important aspects of a car.

Yes it was pretty standard for early 1970s land yachts.

Which the government implemented so the Middle East wouldn't have us by the balls.

40 years later, the Middle East has us by the balls. So, uh, good job, folks.

Much less so. The amount of oil used to produce the same amount of GDP has been greatly reduced, by about 60% IIRC. That means our economy is not as severely affected by oil price shocks. When oil went from $65 a barrel to over $100, it didn't have all that much impact on us. The percentage of people's income spent on oil (both directly, as fuel, and indirectly priced in to nearly every product) has gone down.

So yes, we have done a good job. Unfortunately, we stopped raising CAFE standards so our progress stalled.

My bonanza gets about the same but its actually going close to 200mph while its doing it.

wasn't there a top gear bit where they put 1 gallon in a bunch of super cars and then drove them all flat out to see how far they could go at those speeds? the results were eye-opening for me at the time.

My car takes 13 mpg at 210 kph.

/rated a bit over 30 mpg when not going flat out.

205 mph out of a 5000 lb car? jeesus.

There are several high performance cars that have the same weakness. However, with all of the tech out there, I think if a car can't at least get 25mpg similar to the original Ford Model T, it really shouldn't be on the road.

It's fun to swerve my '99 Nissan pickup in the general direction of one of these whales and see "Look at me!" turn into "Look out!" as they jam the brakes and spin the wheel trying to vacate the space I'm usurping from them.

I really don't see the point of a car that can move at that speed. Where can you safely drive it at more than about 80mph?

I do see the point of fast acceleration though - for safer overtaking.

The cool cars never make it out of the concept phase :(

There's one of my favorites, the Hunaudières from way back in 1999.

And now, the Aero Ace (which looks like something out of some sort of future dystopian sci-fi flick, or, flight of the navigator on wheels).
