Okay, tax rate increases on $1 million and up is a good start.

Norquist is gonna have a head explosion when he hears about this.

"in exchange for spending cuts"

It's called compromise. Which is what all parties should be doing from the get go.

Wouldn't mind seeing America turning back to our golden age tax rates of the 1950's and 60's.

the GOP believes that compromise means 'weakness'. in their view, the Democrats 'compromise'. the GOP doesn't.

Boehner is going to have a lot of explaining to do over this.

Yes, because those high marginal rates correspond to an equal effective tax rate.

Obama needs to put the screws to him. $250K and up or no deal. Obama won the election, he needs to act like it.

In return, the Ohio Republican, who is his party's chief negotiator in the talks, wants spending cuts and reforms to entitlement programs as well as the tax system, the source said.

"Okay, but we'll consider the revenue increase, but only if I still get to fark over the poor."

So basically, nothing has changed.

He had no choice. Not blinking would have led to WAAAAY more trouble for the GOP.

Boehner will unfairly pay the price for doing what he was in no position to prevent, but, he's a douche so I don't really care.

According to NPR, the deal Boner is offering is a tax increase for top 2% which expires after two years.

Agree to the 1 million and up, but also increase the limit on social security taxation. Right now, SS taxes are only taken out for the first $110,000. Increase that to the first $250,000 to help shore up SS.

Otherwise, no deal.

Obama should make Rice his Chief of Staff

It would be even better if he goes for the 90% tax rate on whatever income Buffet has.

IIRC, way back the original high tax rate was built to go after either Carnegie or Rockefeller. Only a handful of people were originally affected.

0bama won the election for President, not King.
The GOP won the House. Why do people keep forgetting that the electorate didn't want 0bama to control both the Senate and the House again?

A 90% tax on the highest incomes would surely make your Kochs go limp ... how would suck them off then?

no, the GOP held on to the house and saw their lead narrow. the Republicans lost and lost big...but hey, i'm cool with you guys crawling back into your echo chamber. by all means, please continue with your delusions. that's partly why the GOP lost so badly in the first place.

You are wrong.
I am fine with tax hikes on the rich.

I just think it is nonsense to keep saying "well, give us the tax hikes today, and sometime in the future we may cut spending, or at least reduce how much we were planning to over spend and call that a reduction".

I think Buffet should have a 90% inheritance tax and a 90% marginal tax rate.

That's odd, I don't remember Obama being up for the House seat in my district. That sucks, I would have totally voted for him there too. I believe Dems got more votes than Republicans across every House district. Good thing ol'

and even with gerrymandering, the GOP still lost seats in the house. it's been weird watching the GOP try to find something positive in these election results.

...and all he wants in exchange is for us to end welfare, let medicare and social security be privatized... basically all social programs shot in the head and tossed into a shallow grave.

And then in 2014 all you will see are "This candidate supported Obama, who destroyed medicare and s.s." ads.

We are going off the cliff before we get a real compromise. And we'll probably be better for it.
My guess is they'll avoid both by punting again.

I think the GOP still has this bizarre notion that they can keep lying to voters and we will all keep falling for it. this is despite the fact that they got their asses kicked in the last election, in part, for treating voters with immense levels of contempt.
