BlippityBleep: ZeroPly: Wow - I didn't know they took black and white pictures of the tour these days. What year is your "evidence" from? Also, I probably would know if my competitors smoked, the same way I would know if they rolled around in horse manure right before coming onto the ice. You must be one of those retards that thinks spraying yourself down with half a gallon of Febreeze will fool the rest of us.

"List of Olympians". Right. RTFA. The best in each of those fields is a nonsmoker. Bradley Wiggins is no Lance Armstrong. He's a mediocre bicyclist, his team engineered his victory.

But wait, you're on here arguing that smokers can actually outperform non-smokers. I don't think logic applies to you. Why don't you go find an "earth is 6000 years old" forum? You'll have better luck there.

i see the finer points of cheeky commentary is lost on you with the tour-de-france pic. and i didn't claim that top olympians were or were not smokers. i just said that healthy people smoke, and there are very athletically competitive smokers, even olympians. and yes, i'm certain that an olympic athlete who smokes can outperform lots of nonsmokers. that's why they competed and won a chance to go to the olympics! it's not like there's a smokers quota they need to fill.

Woah.. back the horse up, Francis. You said there were plenty of healthy smokers who could outperform ME. In any activity. I repeat - ME. So where are they? I gave you a concrete example, and you're desperately moving goal posts to keep people from realizing what a brain damaged idiot you are.

You're obviously not very mentally gifted. You got called out on your Tour de France (it's not hyphenated, Einstein) picture from the 1940s. Yeah, you probably believe in the Todd Akin scientific method from back then, we get it.

I'm sorry that my tone is harsh. I try to be friendly. But you're a cretin, so I have to stand on principle and be rude to you... if it's any consolation a little bit of my soul dies with every insult I hurl in your general direction...

Canned Tamales: msupf: Honestly surprised more complexes don't just put it in the lease that tenants can't smoke.

Fiancé was a leasing agent for a while... the amount of damage a smoker does to an apt in a year's time is astounding. Freshly painted walls are yellow and gummy; duct work, even after cleaning, is gummy and nasty and reeks of smoke; plastics throughout the apt need replacing; carpets and padding often need to be just torn out and replaced since cleanings don't always work, and so on and so on.

It got to the point where one particular apt had to be stripped down to studs because 2 years after the fact the place was still untenable because of two heavy smokers who lived there a couple years ago. They smoke so heavily that they stained the insulation and drywall opposite.

Speaking as a heavy smoker who has done a fair amount of cleaning, maintenance and repair work, you're either full of shiat, or the owners/managers were cheap-asses who paid $60 for an apartment cleaning and expected it to be like new.

It takes even a heavy smoker more than a year to do that kind of damage unless they are huge slobs smoking all day every day with all the windows closed and spilling ashes all over the carpet without cleaning them up,. and never wiping any surfaces down. If they were smart enough to use semi-gloss instead of flat paint, they might not even have to repaint after a good cleaning.

I wish people would stop with the know-nothing exaggerations and bullshiat.

Eh, you're not special enough for me to link you to her work Flickr account that documented the damage. Good quality shots of white surfaces turned yellow, and photos of the professionally cleaned ductwork before, after, and after tear out showing the residue, same goes for behind the drywall and even in the wiring boxes for light switches and plugs.

Listen, no one is claiming that every single person who smokes is going to get lung cancer or won't be able to exercise, especially early on. Yes, it is possible that a good athlete may also be a smoker. But if you look at the statistics it is clear that smokers suffer more health issues directly related to their smoking. So please, stop pretending that smoking does not have an impact on your health, because it does.

i'm not claiming it doesn't have negative impacts. i'm saying you can be healthy and smoke at the same time. hence the athletes. drinking alcohol, junk food, and being sedentary are all bad for you too. it's just okay to rail on smokers for some bullshiat reason. how negatively it effects you is varied. hell, working out and overtraining is bad for your health too. people choose unhealthy things for the lulz with all sorts of things and there's no reason to judge them for it.

hate to burst your weird little bubble, but there are plenty of healthy smokers out there who could physically outperform you in any category.

Challenge accepted. My 500m short track speedskating time this year was 57 seconds. Show me a healthy smoker out there who can outperform me.

go find your own! i'm not into 500m short track speedskating but ask your competitors. i'd be very surprised if you didn't find a few smokers in the bunch. probably closet smokers due to the bullshiat social stigma attached to it nowadays but you'll find them i'm sure.

No, cretin. There are no smokers in competitive speedskating, any more than there are functional alcoholics in the astronaut program. Let me say it again. No smokers. Here's another one - competitive marathon: no smokers. Wait, the ideas just keep coming. My last 100km bicycle time trial? Pretty sure there were no smokers on that one either. Unless they somehow found a way to smoke while on their aero bars and their heart rate was at 90% max.

Smokers are disgusting sh*tbags. They defend their addiction as "freedom" in the same way the NAMBLA creeps enhort you to keep an open mind about sexuality.

Heart rate only 90%. Sounds like they're not working hard enough.
You're probably one of those sh*tbag cyclists that ride 3 abreast and defend your right to use the road like eveyone else.

Guess what, you can do a single hit of meth and be healthy at the same time. When we say "smoker", we're not talking about someone who had half a cigarette when they were 12 and never did it again. We're talking about the disgusting phlegm head who you see gasping for breath every time the elevator goes out. You can't be healthy and smoke OVER THE LONG COURSE. This is not rocket science. It's possible to bang a crack ho with no rubber and come out clean. That doesn't mean it's a good idea.

steamingpile: MurphyMurphy: But we can still smoke in the office, in airplanes and the movie theater, right?

I mean, as long as we don't go crazy with this whole thing...

Only non smokers know how bad the smell is, smokers want to act persecuted but even being around smokers puts off an odor. What I still find amazing is that smokers think they can mask the smell or that we can't tell they smell like an ashtray.

I'm an ex-smoker. I know all about it.

What I still find amazing is, other people think that their offensive odors are ok... to the degree it's socially unacceptable to tell anyone we don't want to smell their stinking ass/Indianfood/perfume/whathaveyou.

But a smoker?! Oh god, look out, this farking smoker thinks he can OFFEND my delicate nostrils with his terrible evil dirty lifestyle choice. I bet I'm getting hundreds of cancers every second I smell the smoke lingering on this guys' jacket.

If I was to choose to start smoking again, I'll agree that you shouldnt' have to stand in a cloud of my smoke. But that is it. I could care less what you smell, we all put up with smells. Lot's of things stink.

Don't want to smell the smoke in the hallway of your apartment building from the guy down in 3C that smokes?
Well I bet he doesn't want to smell your shiatty cooking every night either, but these are the joys of communal housing.

I'm not in a dart league, fool. I'm American. I don't pursue retarded pastimes like darts. I was using it as an example. I do bowl, but only as part of drinking games. I'm sure you can do 7 straight hours of croquet too, big whoop. I only started playing cricket because there was this hot chick from a local university I wanted to impress. But it was pretty boring, so I decided the tail just wasn't worth it.

That said, when you feel like your heart is jumping out of your chest, that's probably because you're close to one of those "cardiac events" I mentioned earlier. For someone who's relatively out of shape, something simple like running a few hundred feet seem like the end of the world. Try quitting smoking for a year, you'll be surprised by how easy cricket is. My biggest problem when playing was trying not to fall asleep at the stump waiting for the batsman to do something. God, talk about a game for those who can't cut it in real athletics.

In poorer African American neighborhoods, it would be preferable to allow smoking in your building.

A high percentage of these particular low income people are smokers, and I'd like as large a pool as possible to pick from in order to get the best people in my building.

What about people who smoke when they're not farking? Are they ok?

Not so CSB:
Wife and I were at Cedar Point last summer. Stopped by one of the CLEARLY MARKED smoking areas, sat down and lit up. Guy next to me does the "cough cough" thing, shoots me a dirty look and storms off.

I do my best to not smoke around people who object to it, and I appreciate that at least one nonsmoker appreciates those of us who try to respect you guys. So, thanks.

hate to burst your weird little bubble, but there are plenty of healthy smokers out there who could physically outperform you in any category.

You sound like a lardo whose only encounter with heart rate monitoring will be after your first "cardiac event".

"cardiac event" sounds too competitive for me.
Played cricket yesterday. Just a short format. Only about a7 hour day.
Play Aussie Rules in winter.
43yr old smoker. 187cm. 98kgs.

Uhh.. yeah.. I've played cricket. Slightly more athletic than bowling or darts...

Wear a heart rate monitor and tell me what your aver ...

If you wanted to impress the hottie, you should have played in your skating tights.
Or better still, take up smoking. Way cool.
I know you don't play darts. You compared its athletic qualities to cricket. I replied the standard you played is comparable. Besides, darts involves maths.
Oh yes, you're American and likely think base ball isn't boring.

That was my thought too. I am a smoker, and I have decorated a few homes - one after living there for a few years with a large number of smoking friends. Sugar soap takes the nicotine right off the paint, which you should be using before you repaint anyway. Oil based paint covers up random stains that would come through fresh paint. I don't know about the carpets - places I lived in had cheap thin carpets anyway. Asked a landlord once and he said they should be replaced every 5 years anyway. On the other hand straight cigarettes do smell terrible compared with the roll-ups and spliffs that we smoke, I can imagine the smell being hard to shift.

I'm familiar with private landlords having "no smokers" policies, but I don't think it should be a matter of law - local or not. It does seem unreasonably paranoid to think that people are really going to be affected by smokers in other apartments.

Oh... I seem to have hit a nerve... meant no offense there mastah...

So, you still haven't said what you mean by "best people". You one of those white guys that thinks Halle Berry is hot, and therefore you're not racist?

I'm not advocating any censorship of bigotry of course. You should stand up and take ownership of it. All I'm looking for is what you mean by the "best people" you want to live with.

Bring on some of the "maths", babe. I really want to know how playing darts requires a Fields medal. I was in the top 20% in my math class my junior year. You going to point out how it takes difference equations to calculate trajectories in air? Bring it on.

I think you're just jealous because I live in America and you're somewhere where you can't sneak across our border to get in...

It means best tenant, smoking not bieng a deal breaker.

In neighborhoods where a high percentage of prospective tenants are going to be smokers, they all get a shot at the unit.

Around Minneapolis, many buildings are choosing to be smoke free. Choose bieng the operative word.

More Republican dog-whistle wharrgarble!

"Best tenant" of course means someone who likes craft brews rather than malt liquor, someone who gets a respectable hair cut rather than wearing dreads, someone who listens to Rolling Stones rather than Jay-Z. We get it. You're OK with someone of the darker persuasion, as long as they behave just like someone on the Cosby show. Which never happens in real life.

Don't get me wrong, I fully respect your right to hold these opinions. I just think you should spend more time on self realization, understanding what you are really saying...

I was assuming the hypothetical tenant ultimately placed to be an African American. Thats why I said African American neighborhood... that's who'll be in your building and I want to talk to all of them... Smokers included.

You assumed a good tenant couldnt be a black tenant and you assumed allowing smokers in was some elaborate ploy to keep blacks out and that's why you are a racist.

BlippityBleep: steamingpile: MurphyMurphy: But we can still smoke in the office, in airplanes and the movie theater, right?

I mean, as long as we don't go crazy with this whole thing...

Only non smokers know how bad the smell is, smokers want to act persecuted but even being around smokers puts off an odor. What I still find amazing is that smokers think they can mask the smell or that we can't tell they smell like an ashtray.

i find it amazing how much people gripe about cigarette smoke and completely gloss over other airborne contaminants that are way worse for you.

That's because you're an idiot, and insist on denying facts.

You live in an entirely different world, I might even say "realm", so I forgive your naivette. If we're talking skinning crocodiles or hunting in the bush, I would be no match to you. Not even remotely. I accept that and don't have an ego problem with it, because my lifepath has been completely different from yours. I do not think I am a better person than you because of that. However, creating an indoors skating rink requires an immense expenditure of energy and technoligical effort. If you don't have the resources to do that, there's absolutely nothing wrong with third world games like cricket. But you're comparing apples and oranges when you think batting a ball around the outback is the same as sprinting across carefully manufactured ice on 1mm blades. Again, no hard feelings.

Just analyze your own words and you'll see what I mean by pervasive and entrenched racism...

When you talk about the tenant from the "I" perspective, you always use "African American". (paragraph 2)

But when you talk about the tenant from the "you" perspecitve, you always say "black". (paragraph 3)

If that's not telling, I don't know what is. I applaud you for confronting your own bigotry, but you have to let go of the denial to get any further...
