LOL

To be fair, a horse is much further up the list of "name something awesome" to someone of his generation

I read an article written by a fella that attended an Ellison seminar on writing and apparently all Harlan did was tell the crowd to give up now, none of them would be any good so don't even bother trying. After taking their money. What a complete jack ass. This is the only author I have refused to read because of his/her odious personality. Having a mental disability myself I tend to give my fellow psycho's more benefit of the doubt than the average ill mannered jerk for bad manners or bad behaviour, but Ellison has no excuse.

richard_1963: You know, I read a story, maybe year ago, quoting Ellison giving the impression that he was gravely ill and probably only had a few months to live.

I guess he got better.

Death doesn't want to deal with the litigation.

Harlan Ellison is probably a complete dick, but Angry Candy is still the best collection of short stories ever published.

Haliburton Cummings: the sad thing about Ellison is that he has had ..oh...maybe four good things in his repertoire.
one of them was ...wait for it...

A STAR TREK EPISODE

he is famous for biatching and complaining...

//boy and his dog
///and nothing else

Gotta disagree. He is a class A prick, but damned if the dude isn't one of the best short story authors I have ever read.

whither_apophis: Son of Thunder: madgonad: The plot is far older than Akira Kurosawa's excellent film.

Vulnerable X is threatened by Y. X finds several random and washed up people that find a way to save X.

We always remember Seven Samurai because a) it was awesome, and b) it was immediately copied by The Magnificent Seven, which was also awesome.

The plot is still very familiar - Battle Beyond the Stars follows the plot directly. A Bug's Life shortens it a bit by putting the heroes together to begin with. Others like My Darling Clementine, The Wild Bunch, Guns of Navarone, Dirty Dozen, and Ronin. Hell, the TV series The A Team follows the formula almost every episode.

I'm drawing a blank here. What are some pre-Kurosawa stories of assembling a ragtag crew to defend Vulnerable X?

Any Three Stooges / Laurel & Hardy / Abbott & Costello film

Shut up Harlan you are old and irrelevant.

Beat me to it, but you earned a favorite in the process. Angry Candy was awesome, and Slippage was great, too, if just for Mefisto in Onyx. Honorable mention to Dangerous Visions.

Seven Samurai led to The Magnificent Seven. Star Wars borrowed more from The Hidden Fortress.
