richard_1963: You know, I read a story, maybe year ago, quoting Ellison giving the impression that he was gravely ill and probably only had a few months to live.I guess he got better.
Haliburton Cummings: the sad thing about Ellison is that he has had ..oh...maybe four good things in his repertoire.one of them was ...wait for it...A STAR TREK EPISODEhe is famous for biatching and complaining.../shatterday//boy and his dog///and nothing else
whither_apophis: Son of Thunder: madgonad: The plot is far older than Akira Kurosawa's excellent film.Vulnerable X is threatened by Y. X finds several random and washed up people that find a way to save X.We always remember Seven Samurai because a) it was awesome, and b) it was immediately copied by The Magnificent Seven, which was also awesome. The plot is still very familiar - Battle Beyond the Stars follows the plot directly. A Bug's Life shortens it a bit by putting the heroes together to begin with. Others like My Darling Clementine, The Wild Bunch, Guns of Navarone, Dirty Dozen, and Ronin. Hell, the TV series The A Team follows the formula almost every episode.I'm drawing a blank here. What are some pre-Kurosawa stories of assembling a ragtag crew to defend Vulnerable X?Any Three Stooges / Laurel & Hardy / Abbott & Costello film
skepticultist: Harlan Ellison is probably a complete dick, but Angry Candy is still the best collection of short stories ever published.
