Ive always loved GZA, this made me respect him a whole lot more.

2012-12-14 05:24:08 PM
IIRC GZA was interviewed on NPR a few years ago. He was unexpectedly brilliant and well read, in general. He talked about sneaking off to the library when he was a kid and having to lie about it so he wouldn't be ostracized by the other kids in his neighborhood.

I remember being blown away. He would pull out literary references and the work of scientists and philosophers like it was second nature. It wasn't that I thought he would be dumb, I just never expected him to be as smart as he turned out to be.

I like his comments on how all the new rappers coming up are uninteresting and only have themselves to talk about. No more stories or interesting viewpoints incorporating sophisticated subjects like science and philosophy, it's all just naval-gazing bravado about gang life with texturized sound effects (I blame Soulja Boy).

Liquid Swords is hands down the best non wu-tang album by any of the members. Hell, it's better than the last couple Wu releases.

I hate that line, you can go to DatPiff.com right now and get a new album every day by a smart, interesting rapper with great, layered beats for free. Or you can get an ignorant rapper with club beats. Or you can get a rapper that is smart with club beats. Etc., every day. There are plenty of intelligent albums coming out now too, I mean Big Boi put a major label release out this week with songs featuring Wavves and Little Dragon for chrissakes. If you don't like new stuff, you have more exposure to older stuff than ever before. I can buy literally any album ever right now with no DRM. There is archives.org wiht a huge live music selection for free. We live in the golden age of music!

Success ain't easy.

You can't get to the top, or stay there, in any industry without something under the hood.

I'd bet a dollar even the teenage Korean kids who get number one in online game server rankings are probably pretty bright. Winning ain't easy.

4:21 is the best IMO. You can play that whole album and only have to hit skip maybe twice.

Is It Me
Problem
Fall Out
Dirth Meth (with Ol Dirty Bastards verses) (Where the shootin and the fightins and the stabbins at?)
Presidential MC
Konichiwa biatches
4:20

Also, the RZA is a fairly bright gentleman for a ghetto rapper himself. Here his is reviewing Django Unchained for, of all sites, HuffPo.

Meth is great but I still think Gza's Liquid Swords is still the best Wu related album there is. He really keeps the Wu spirit alive in his Liquid Swords album man.

Method Man is awesome(bring the pain), I love the guy and would rate him very high in my list of favorite rappers. Him and Red are awesome and it seems they we're born to rap with each other. He's an accomplished person in my opinion. His work on The Wire is awesome.

Gza and Rza really hold the Wu together though, I don't think you can deny that.

Thanks for the links, I haven't heard that stuff in a long time!

It shouldn't come as any surprise to anybody who has listened to the Wu over the years that GZA and RZA are both brilliant. RZA's breadth and depth of knowledge across a wide spectrum of disciplines is evident not only from his music, but his interviews, writings, etc.

As for the greatest solo Wu album, I am torn. It's a good problem to have because there are so many good ones. I could go back and forth between Rae's Cuban Links and GZA's Liquid Swords. Both of those albums are so good that I don't ever skip a single track. The 2 Bobby Digital records definitely have tracks to skip (that Black Smampoo shiat should have made it to the cutting room floor for sure), but there are tracks that rank among some of my favorites of all time. NYC Everything with RZA and Meth is ridiculously hard. When RZA is on his game, I think he is one of the best MC's to ever pick up a mic.

It's pretty amazing to look back in retrospect and just marvel at how much talent was in this one group of guys. To be talking about how great GZA and RZA are without mentioning guys like Ghost, Meth, and ODB - all of whom are/were absolute superstars in their own right - is kind of funny when you think about how they all started out in the same group together.
