Glitchwerks: I've been doing this for years on various trolls I encounter. Even if they use a common user name, other details will usually give them away. For example, quotes in signatures, their interests, and so on.Sometimes they give away identifying details in past posts as well; searching their posting histories on websites will give that away.Sooner or later, you end up on their Facebook or MySpace page in their shower.
