Man, I had a whole post written up about diversity in a "90% white" country (source) and then I read the article and it's about LGB.

Maybe we could get an Amy Pond - Martha Jones sex scene though? That fixes two different diversity issues!

The BBC is just find without the "diversity". Nobody complains about the lack of diversity on LOGO, BET or Univision. There are plenty of other channels you can watch if you need to feel diverse. I am sure Will and Grace is running in syndication somewhere.if you need a gay fix.

BBC needs to concentrated on bigger problems like not taking do long to get out the new seasons of Top Gear and Sherlock.

I thought it wasn't supposed to matter anymore, whether someone was black or white, gay or straight, etc. I thought we were all supposed to look past that?

I have 3 gay friends. One of them is, well, flaming. The other two, honestly, you'd struggle to tell. None of them ever mentions their gayness much.

I think I may have it figured out with Karen Gillan. Sure, she's attractive, but nothing that comes anywhere near the amount of adulation she gets. Then, in some shots, she will crinkle up her nose of have a big, goofy grin, and her sexiness just skyrockets.

That's going to be tough to do when you have two incredibly in-demand actors and an EP with another entire show of his own to run. It does sound, though, like they'll be startings season three production here pretty soon.

I've just learned to treat Sherlock like a film franchise. People aren't complaining about having to wait a year between Hobbit movies.

Since the latest research puts the LGB numbers at around 1-2% of the population, anything more than 2 out of every 100 BBC characters being LGB is unrealistic overrepresentation.

BBC, LGB, suddenly I'd like a BLT
or maybe an MLT, mutton-lettuce-tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean, and the tomatoes are ripe... they're so perky, I love that

Complaining about "ethnic diversity" on a global scale in a show about England is moronic. Especially a show about aristocrats set before WW2.

Lack of diversity? I've always found the number of black people on British television to be substantial and wildly out of proportion to the number of blacks in Great Britain. It's like British TV is trying to make a shows easier to export to the States by bumping up the number of black characters to American proportions.

2012-12-14 04:14:00 PM

Foxxinnia: American proportions.

Actual American proportions (~12.6% according to the last census) or American TV proportions (probably 30% or more)?

2012-12-14 04:32:35 PM
I always got a kick when they threw a black actor(s) into a scene that takes place in long ago London. I imagine 18th century London must have been whiter than Maine.

I'm on series 9 of "Midsomer Murders" on netflix and they ain't kidding. Nothing but upper middle class english white folk.

The producer of Midsomer Murders was suspended last year I think after saying the drama "wouldn't work" if there was racial diversity in the show.

Brian True-May, who co-created the series, told the Radio Times the long-running drama was a "last bastion of Englishness" and should stay that way.

The programme - which has run for 14 series - appealed to a "certain audience", he said.

/ Plenty of cut & paste in the above.

London was one of the biggest ports at the centre of the biggest empire in the world in Victorian times with a large China town so non-white faces in London wouldn't be out of place.

Now a non-white face outside of the big ports of the time (London, Bristol, Liverpool,Cardiff etc) would be rare but in no means impossible. The first black police officer was in Carlisle in 1837.

We are a mongrel nation and stonger for it.

Seriously, 12.6%? Somewhere is skewing the hell out of the numbers from Atlanta. I went to Nevada a few years back, saw one black guy all week. It was damn unnerving.

Here's another random thought: are they comparing the number of characters who are explicitly shown to have non-hetero inclinations against characters who are explicitly shown to have hetero inclinations, or against the total number of characters? 'Cause if it's not shown, who's to say what the sexual orientation of Jack the Pizza Delivery Guy is?

The BBC saying they don't put enough diversity on TV is like Taco Bell saying they don't cause enough intestinal distress. Stop it already. If you are over doing it to the extent that people make jokes about how much you are over doing it, it is time to stop. STAHP!!
