Makes you wonder... if it's a tumor does it count as cannibalism?

/squeamish today for some reason

Could you be pregnant?

Nah, probably just a tumor.

here to help: MycroftHolmes: What, precisely, is a rape test?

If you are referring to a rape kit, it would probably too late to do one of those if pregnancy was showing.

You know what I meant and on a 12 year old there is a good chance they could still check for scarring and other indicators. Hell, a trained psychologist could likely get a young victim to disclose if anything had happened better then derpity doo mumsie.

But way to exclude every other bleeding point I made to get your snark on. Good jerb.

My point was to point out the ignorance displayed in your very self righteous diatribe. There is no such thing as a rape test. There is no way to physically determine if someone is raped. There is physical examination that can be done to determine if their are injuries or conditions consistent with forcible sex (but normal, consensual sex can also produce similar bruising). Even then, all physical evidence of any sexual assault would have been long, long gone by the time pregnancy started showing.

You are trying very hard to denigrate the actions of the mother as being incorrect. But if the pregnancy tests were negative, what reason would she have to have her child checked for STD's or speak to a rape councilor or psychiatrist?

If you want to be judgmental and self righteous, that is your prerogative. It would be best, though, if your self righteousness was supported by even a modicum of fact or a sprinkling of critical thought.

Yeah... sorry, Mycroft. I don't participate in angry little troll games anymore. You know full well what I was talking about. If the chick thought her 12 yo kid was pregnant she should have brought her to a doctor immediately. You know that. I know that. Anyone with the tiniest bit of common sense knows that. In fact at 12 yo the freaking cops should have been involved if sexual contact had been determined.

Be gone, ye olde derp farmer.

The only thing more dangerous than a self righteous and judgmental person is a self righteous and judgmental idiot. Should she have taken her to a doctor, yes...in fact she did. Did she think she was pregnant, no, because the tests kept coming up negative. Once the symptoms couldn't be explained anymore, she acted. Could she have done so earlier, maybe, we don't know what the kid looked like, we don't know anything about the situation.

Making the point that she could have involved a doctor earlier is one thing. Making the point by invoking non-existant tests to look for injuries that would have long since healed (and doing it in a most condescending and self righteous way) just brands you for the fool that you are.

One interesting thing to note-you keep saying that the police should be involved if sexual contact was determined. What sexual contact are you referencing? The sexual contact that the child denied, or the sexual contact that the pregnancy test was unable to substantiate?

Clemkadidlefark: My hand to God, when I was working my ay through college as a surgical tech, I scrubbed for a exploratory laparotomy that ended up being the removal of a 99 pound ovarian cyst.

Hmm. When was that? I remember a Fark thread a few years back about something similar. But I seem to recall that cyst only being 86 pounds.

/Woman weighed 400 pounds.
//The cyst kept her from losing weight.
//I imagine she's doing a hell of a lot better now.

here to help: Nice mother. Instead taking her to the doctor right away she decided to put the kid through a slut shaming.

Yanno... doctors can perform pregnancy tests too ya dumb bint. And if she thought she WAS pregnant wouldn't it be prudent to get some STD tests done as well? Sooooper geeeenius.

I also would have been worried the kid had been raped. Yeah those doctors... they do rape tests as well.

She didn't want the Catholic Church to excommunicate her. Selfish biatch.

The mother should lose custody of her kids for the negligence. Repeated pregnancy tests that turn up negative but with odd symptoms should have still spurred a visit to the doctor well before the tumor got that large.

Repeated pregnancy tests are not a replacement for making sure your kid gets the appropriate health care...also if the kid had been pregnant, why wasn't she interested in making sure that the potential fetus was as healthy as possible given her daughter's age? She should have taken her to the doctor as soon as there was any suspicion of something being off, whether it was a tumor or pregnancy. After that first or second negative pregnancy test would have been about the appropriate time.

She probably didn't have insurance.

This would be one of those scenarios where that EVIL Planned Parenthood program might have been useful.

Agreed. That said, the mom gave her THREE pregnancy tests. Maybe after two it's time to find a clinic or hospital.

What I'm saying is she's not smart.

LaraAmber: QT_3.14159: When I was pregnant the doctor came in shaking her head because a 12 yr old she was treating had just gotten an ultrasound to take a closer look at the tumor they were worried she had and it was a five month fetus. The 12 yr old had sworn up and down she had never had sex. It must be a pretty scary world you live in when you'd rather think you had cancer than admit you'd had sex.

Did your doctor never hear of HIPAA?

Well, it IS a living thing. Or, it at least had the potential for life.

From the article, just under the photo of her in the hospital bed.

Operation: The Florida girl had the 19-pound tumor removed after being teased fro being 'pregnant' by classmates

That's racist.

She lives in the US. Nobody gets in to see a specialist unless they have medical insurance or pay $$$ up front.

Jacksonville's a big town, even without health insurance, I'm sure the mother could have found a free or reduced price clinic some place.  Lacking health insurance is still not an excuse, not when it applies to a child's care. Florida also has a SCHIP program.

She tested her kid "every two weeks" over three months and got negative results each time and then finally took her to a doctor? (And then a second one according to the local Florida article). Effectively ignoring the symptoms for three months is what annoys me. Testing for pregnancy every two weeks doesn't count as seeking treatment.

brantgoose: Fun fact: a woman needs something like an extra 115 Calories a day to make a baby. That's a handful of Oreo cookies, regular. Strange but true.

Yes, 8 pounds of babby would produce something on the order of 30k dietary calories if you burned it, but you certainly couldn't build one on a budget of 115 dietary calories a day.

A woman needs that many calories available as building materials just to assemble the babby, but she needs them at a rate that varies geometrically throughout the pregnancy because the absolute rate of babby growth increases with babby's size. She also needs a lot of calories to assemble that energy into babby parts, to run the babby's own moving parts, to compensate for metabolic inefficiencies, and for the extra energy needed to haul around all the additional mass. Plus all the non-caloric bits that make up a babby, which also come from food and require their own energy to metabolize and build into babby parts.

A pregnancy test and STD screening does not require a specialist and from what I understand those types of services can be acquired free from various clinics or PP. Then they likely would have realized something was very wrong.

And they sell pregnancy tests at the Dollar Store for...a dollar! Unfortunately, once you get the results specialists have to do the lab work, ultrasounds and imaging required to pinpoint the problem. Specialist office visits run anywhere between $400-$800, up-front of course! If the child does not qualify for Medicaid (income cut-off is about $4,500 for a family of three), then she may qualify for Fl. "Kid's Care"...provided there is space...provided there is an open enrollment period.

All that takes time; IANAL, but I do sell medicare/medicaid plans.

LaraAmber:

It's probably too late to reply to this, but it's not like she told me a name or I even saw a 12 yr old girl in the office. I'd been sitting back in the exam room with my own 12 yr old daughter, who had come with me to hear the baby's heartbeat. She was basically telling the story as a warning to her to 1) don't get pregnant and 2) don't lie about it if you do.

The Larch: Well, there's a pretty damned good chance she's protecting a rapey step-dad, and the terrible slut shaming she's going to get is from her mom. Given a choice between "cancer" and "my step dad was raping me so my mom threw me out on the street and told me to never come home again and now I'm a homeless 12 year old girl with a kid", I'm guessing most people would take cancer.

Yes, this. That's why it's a scary world. :(
