To play devil's advocate, the Mormon church has a lot of flaws but one thing they are good at is taking care of those in need, so long as those in need subscribe to their crazy. I grew up around a Mormon family that hit some pretty hard times when tdad, the sole breadwinner, had the double whammy of cancer and treatment for cancer that made him unable to work. According to him the fact that he was a Mormon who was in good standing (meaning he tithed 10%) the church was there to help him out. Apparently the church was there to make up the gap on the bills they couldn't pay until he was able to go back to work and start tithing again. I know this story is anecdotal but according to them this is SOP for the church, if you are in good standing.

I lean left and loathe the current GoP but I think it is a pretty valid point that both the left and the right, in general, want to help the needy they just differ in their delivery. The right want private charity to do it and the left wants government to do it.

I don't know, but what I do know is that there are very large warehouses here in SLC, farms, and full industrial sized granaries dedicated to nothing but LDS charities. I've always wondered what percentage, but my point is that this isn't small token contributions by the Church, it's very big. There's a lot of shiat about the Mormons that pisses me off, but I always think this os one thing where they get unfairly ripped on.

Just to keep things clear, the LDS charities are huge. The temples are ornate, but there is really also plenty of money going to true charity. I know, I know, we want to hate on the Mo's whenever possible, but this is one where people are wrong. Growing up around them, and then coming back to Utah 6 years ago, I've seen them help out plenty, and it's not just to church members, like people try and claim also.

The may have some farked up ideas (though I think I might no longer have been excommunicated for the same reason) but from what I experienced, that tithing gets used in some very important charity work.

I don't think they realize how much damage they do to their image by being so tight lipped about their finances, especially the charities. I think it would be a great PR move on their part.

I know quite a bit about the history of the Mormons and it is pretty despicable. On a smaller local scale they tend to take care of their own. That's all I am saying. I don't hold any more or less contempt for them than I do any other large religion. I might be willing to cut the Jews some slack, but they have plenty of dirty laundry too.
